Reiber pegged to start at 4?

Caleb was out. Dean and Aundre will fight for the 6th man role imo. I do think Dean can give about 8-10 minutes a night at the 4, in addition to minutes backing up Cliff.

Sounds like Mag will start at the 4, though, when Caleb’s healthy.

Woofolk and Chol throw interesting wrenches into that conversation too. Haven’t seen/heard enough to comment much more than that, but sounds like there’s a chance they play (not just garbage time).

And for Oskar, it’s now or never (leaning towards never).

I am very bullish about Mag. Was really hoping Hyatt was good enough in camp to get the starting job. I would have thought it was his job to lose.

Mag
Simpson
Chol
Spencer

So many guys that have a chance to keep the program rolling. We need multiple guys to emerge. Geo and Ron's shoes are huge and asking Caleb, Cliff and Paul to make enormous leaps is too big of an ask, in my eyes, as a fan.

The specific quote is: "Pikiell immediately moved him [Reiber] with the first unit alongside Omoruyi. Mag filled in for McConnell, with Mulcahy and Spencer in the backcourt. These are the top six guys in the rotation."

Dean alongside Omorui seems to make a lot of sense since Dean is our best outside shooter. He's a stretch 4 that's also comfortable banging low when needed. Ideal compliment to create space for Omoruyi. With Woolfolk in the mix we can afford to risk Dean and Omoruyi on the court together and not be down to 1 big if one of them gets injured.

Other items of interest:
  • Reiber intimidates Cliff at times with his dunking
  • Open talk of folks reaching out to encourage our players to use the portal. We all knew it was happening but I think it is unusual to have coaches and players speaking openly about it.

Actually encouraged to hear Dean is continuing to progress and move ahead of Hyatt. Reiber has a higher ceiling in my opinion. Hyatt is a ball handling liability and needs to hit his mid range jumpers early to be effective. Otherwise he seems lost out there and tries too hard to create on his own which leads to turnovers. Hyatt does have the ability to be a good rebounder though and if he can keep improving there and up his defensive game; he’ll be solid to good.

Wasn’t it just a short 6-8 months ago there were people ( so called experts) on this board who adamantly argued Dean Reiber could not play the 4, give Cliff a rest or even be In the 2022-2023 conversation. Where are those MBB experts ? Now it still hasn’t been proven and may all be just hype by Pike and company he brings in to view his work but it certainly would verify that growth and development is a Pikiell attribute Rutgers definitely needed. Thank you Jim Calhoun.

I'm rooting for Hyatt to have a big year. I'd love to see a strong rotation, with good players competing for time, and have the ability to have different sets of players step up for us and be part of the answer on any given night.

I have been wrong before. I still am in the camp he can’t play significant minutes alongside cliff.

I am very opinionated, but I fall short of expert status

Well here’s the good thing to take from this. Nobody has said you or anyone else can’t voice their opinion but it is common to sound that way at times myself included. If Dean, Mag , Hyatt ,Woolfolk and Palmquist give us bench production I would be happier than a pig in the Polk. The more I hear coach Pikiell the more I am impressed. A true gentleman , a controlled demeanor and a positive outlook. One thing I did take away from this media thread was his obvious worry of portal losses after this season.

If Coach is contemplating giving some minutes to Reiber at the "4" you'd have to think Woolfolk is showing enough that Coach thinks he can give us some minutes at Center. Either that or Oskar has, as it looks like Palmquist was guarding Cliff as a "5" in a few of the videos.

I think its more bullish on Woolfolk being able to play the 5 and contribute this season. I can't imagine we see Oskar at the 5. He would get bullied

It still amazes me how some fans seem to hold out a hope that Dean Reiber cannot produce at the 4. We all want a solid 8-10 players going forward. I’m banking on Mawot , Reiber and Hyatt at the start with Palmquist, Simpson, Miller, Woolfolk coming on by B1G schedule. When was the last time we looked foward to Rutgers MBB. The past 3 seasons have raised us up and gave us something to look forward to.

I think I like a Mag/Reiber rotation at the 4 more than Hyatt/Mag.

Tyler Wahl is a 4, Matthew Mayer is a 4, Race Thompson is a 4. Reiber matches up physically better with them than with Steven Crowl or TJD

The best part is Mag and Dean are completely different options for Pike at the 4. This team is ridiculously versatile

Hopefully Pike can find the right lineup combinations bc there really are so many different variations which could be a blessing or a curse

You think it “sounds that way” from this article? How? The article explicitly says Dean is slated to start at the 4 and Mag filled in for Caleb. I have no idea where Carino got the intel from (or if he himself is just speculating).

Dean is our best outside shooter??? Easy my friend, I got excited when he made a few 3's last year too, but he's not our best outside shooter. Spencer, Mulcahy and maybe McConnell are all better.

Dean on offense at the 4 is fine vs a few opponents, especially in the OOC....

Dean on defense at the 4 guarding what we see in most cases, like an EJ Liddell was at Ohio State or asking him to close out on shooters like Houser at Michigan State, Terrence Williams at Michigan or Trace Jackson-Davis is not going to work without getting Dean in foul trouble.

Dean has upside and is a better option to make pick and pop 3s as a 4 or 5 and screen and pop with Mulcahy, so it's more of a product of what keeps Mulcahy productive and compliments his passing.

These are just matchup opportunities that RU needs to show teams they can run and be successful with, so we show teams more options.....which expands what teams have to prepare for.

We have a lot of 3 point attempts we need this lineup to absorb from the departing Baker and Harper. The more 3s Dean takes, the better it is for our offense. If he can improve a bit on defense, it could work, but maybe we mix in some zone looks on defense to protect Spencer and Mulcahy, who are likely going to be targeted by opponent guards off the dribble. Perimeter defense outside of Caleb and Mag, could be leaky if you have too many average to below average defenders on the floor.

Mayer is going to be an absolute matchup nightmare for the big ten. I agree on the other guys. I still think mawot starts at the 4 first game of the year. Offense will need to look a little different if they start putting dean at the 4 vs. 3 years of Ron starting at the 4 which I’m sure they’re doing.

Too many people expect ALL players to come right in and be max performers. They dont understand a proper development timeline for most players. But you know… everyone has to have an opinion on everything. lol.

Why would you think Dean would cover TJD if Cliff was on the floor at the same time? He's covering Race Thompson in that scenario.

I would not use EJ Liddell as an example of what we face at the 4 in "most cases". Most 4s won't be drafted.

What makes you think Caleb is a better outside shooter than Dean?

I think I'd rank it Spencer 1 Dean 2

Not sure. Dean only attempted 12 3s. Doesn’t seem like big enough sample to take much away. Yes, he made 7 of those, but Freeman made 6 of 16 as a junior and went on to shoot 15% as a senior when he took more regular attempts (as an example).

Statistically he was definitely our best 3 point shooter last year. You could argue that it doesn’t count because he didn’t have to make his own shot and it was low volume. That’s fine. Point being he’s a real 3pt threat and will stretch the D. Having said that, I think he’s our best 3 pt shooter until proven otherwise. McConnel is a very bad 3pt shooter. Mulcahy is average, and similar to Reiber, didn’t have to make his own shot but shot a much lower percent. Spencer still has to prove that he can do it at this level, although he’s likely to be our best shooter based on reports.

Mulcahy loves to spot up for the three in the corner when he's playing off the ball.
McConnell has show the ability to hit the three in the past - I'd take 30 percent from downtown.
I think Spencer won't dissapoint. Predict high 30's to around 40.
We will see about Reiber, but will be curious to see if Mag can shoot the three. Hyatt is another potential threat from outside.
I don't think we will be world beaters from outside, but will be good enough to keep defenses honest.

The difference is that Reiber was mentioned a few times as a perimeter threat during his recruitment - which wasn't the case with Freeman, who was talked about as a post scorer.

Reiber hitting threes is supposed to be part of his overall package, whereas Freeman was trying to expand his range to get more of a look from pro scouts.

I don't think Reiber will maintain is 58% 3pt percentage. But I do think seeing is believing. Reiber shot 12 3s and canned 7 of them in games where he had very limited opportunity due to low minutes and being the last option. He likes to shoot the 3 when given a chance. He doesn't hesitate. And he hit enough of them with confidence in actual games that it's not a fluke. I like guys that take advantage of their chances and actually perform.

For the other guys, I'm rooting for it. I love to hear good practice reports. I think some improvements will be made. But I won't put much stock into it until I see it in games.

Oh it’s not the same at all. I was just giving an example of how unreliable a sample of under 20 total 3s actually is.

Low sample size, but Dean clearly has a very nice touch on his shot. You can tell he's a shooter the way the ball leaves his hand

Freeman's shot was ugly

Definitely agree with the small sample size, and I doubt he keeps up that percentage.

But seeing a guy go 7/12 from the arc in limited minutes after hearing how he was a 3pt threat in HS is promising. He pulled the trigger 2.3 times per 40 min (not much behind McConnell's 2.5), and that was from the 5 spot. As a PF, he'd likely get more opportunities to be on the arc with Omoruyi at C.

Would love to see him shooting north of .350 with 1-2 attempts per game.

I agree with NJ Hawk. The problem is on defense. Reiber's lack of physicality is going to leave Cliff exposed to too many fouls. Sure he can play the 4 is short spurts but hand-check defense is not going to get it done among the B1G's most bruising interior scorers.

This makes no sense. Dean is the biggest option at the 4. The concern with Dean at the 4 is how he would guard the perimeter. If anything, he should be the 4 matchup dependant against the bigger 4's in the conference
