This is what big time programs do - they negative publicity, program growth stunting, and donor turnoff was not worth the squeeze, and they made the right decision

FSU had a similar decision to make with Willy Taggart a few years ago. After the Wake Forest loss, many of the big $$ boosters wanted him gone. Problem was, the money wasn't there for the buyout. They could have made a few calls to get it, but decided to roll the dice to save a few dollars

In between that game and Miami, the money was raised. Then Miami came into town and curb stomped us on national tv, and Taggs was gone shortly thereafter

Moral of the story is to cut bait when the time is right, as the ancillary challenges you'll face are often greater than the upfront money. I wish we would have canned Ash prior to his last year, or at least after the Michigan game

We didn't, as Hobbs believed in him or didn't have the funds (stories vary). Either way, good move for The Corn, but they're ripe for the picking when they come to P-Way on that Friday night in early October

We’re not stuck in the 90s; the only time that’s ever said is by people outside the program. We just want to be competitive for conference titles and establish an identity built with solid line play on both sides of the ball (and, you know—maybe not lose to a directional school at home in year 5 of a coach’s tenure).

You guys should understand our pain. Remember Ash’s last year? That’s exactly where we were. Guys had given up. Fan base was demoralized. There was no hope anywhere. Now, at least we can move forward.
"Demoralized?" Did Nebraska stop selling out its stadium? How many season ticket holders you guys down to? Son, you don't know demoralized.

Rhule doesn’t like recruiting.
Was listening to a podcast with Forde/Dellenger/Wetzel and Dellenger said from he's heard in agent circles that Rhule has made it known that's he's willing to return to college if it doesn't work out in Carolina. Is Nebraska a location he'd want? I was surprised he went to Baylor so who knows.

Was looking at a list of NCAAF Coaches, and noted some records of new coaches that were up and comers. Maybe some need more time, but some not doing so well.

Seth Littrell (N Texas) 39-39
Jeff Brohm is regarded as a "good coach" but he is 29-30
Had not realized Jay Norvell was hired by Colorado State from Nevada. 0-2 so far--fire him!!!!
When does 2-12 at ASU get Jedd Fisch fired?
Scott Satterfield 19-20 at Louisville
Neal Brown 17-20 at WVU

Brady Hoke is 17-7 at SDSU //95-79 for his career
Does Hugh Freeze get a shot somewhere 28-11 at Liberty?
Jason Candle was hot early (no pun, but he could melt the Frost-bitten Huskers fans?). He's 47-27 at Akron

I was high on Littrell for a bit and he was on the verge of KSU but didn't get it and he's been on the hot seat since. I've said this before as a coach you better be careful how picky you get because one day you're hot as the sun and the next day you're burnt out embers.

The other thing is you never know how a coach will do when the step up either from coordinator to P5 HC or G5 HC to P5 HC. Neal Brown at Troy and Satterfield at App State were hot names but now seats are getting quite warm in the P5. OTOH Chris Klieman at KSU from the FCS and Liepold at Kansas from Buffalo are the current toasts of the town lol. It's always somewhat of a crapshoot.

On another note, Jamey Chadwell at Coastal is a name I've seen mentioned for Nebraska but probably down the list.

I haven't seen Freeze mentioned and I don't think the other two are big enough names. That Dodd article mentioned that Matt Campbell has made it known that's he's interested in the job but who knows if that's true or not as I don't trust Dodd as much as other reporters.

If I'm Nebraska, I think Rhule/Stoops are the top choices and then Campbell/Patterson after that. In the end though, it's always some level of a crap shoot. Could you have gotten any more perfect a choice for Nebraska than Frost and it was a mess. UCF winless to undefeated in two years, favored son returning home and it went worse beyond what you could have imagined....never know. That's exactly why I think all these contracts ADs hand out like candy are dumb.

The pressure there is astronomical compared to here. The fans still think it’s the 90s and the program is relevant. I also read their fan boards last night and ours are mild compared to theirs.
The fact that they’re 0-3 and we’re 2-0 might have something to do with it.

They're 1-2 but I agree with him.

I'm guessing the comparison he's making is when we're not doing well and they're not doing well that we're milder. I've said that for years here. In general, I think this fanbase is more tolerant and mild compared to many others and that's not only when those other teams are bad. It's even when they're good sometimes, they still go wacko over anything negative. I know some think stuff here is over the top but it's nothing compared to a lot of other places.

On Frost, he was a beneficiary of McKenzie Milton's success, and unfortunately for Frost, he never identified and/or developed a star QB at Nebraska. This is another example of how difficult it is to recruit, identify and develop a starting QB. How many years did it take Jim Harbaugh to strike gold at QB at Michigan? Harbaugh had the benefit of a winning record (duh!) while he found/developed his QB.

Back to McKenzie Milton, I forgot about his saga and end of his career. Also did not realize the parallels between Milton's career, and his replacement, Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel is with the Sooners now, and it looks like he is off to a good start.

As an aside, kind of funny how both Milton and Gabriel are under 6 feet in height.

I still think Frost is a good coach, he’s had too much success at other places to just solely focus on his time at Nebraska.

I think it just comes down to an identity issue with Nebraska.

One thing is for sure, whoever Nebraska ends up hiring I’m sure they’ll be having the NIL philosophy discussion before the deal is signed.

Rhey obviously have money to burn. Winning is important.
That, or they cut a deal. $8 million is a lot for both the haves and have nots.

Couple things here:

1. He’s a Nebraska guy and might have felt it was the right thing to do (cut a deal for like $4 mill and call it a day)
2. Players can now redshirt and transfer if they want
3. Reputation wise this was only going to get worse on a national scale, he saved face

I don’t think it’s unrealistic to think they met in the middle and said okay, it’s time.

Frost isn’t an idiot, he knows the start to this season was unacceptable after the previous seasons he’s had.

Crazy fact, he was 5-22 in one possession games during his time there.

I’ve mentioned this in another thread. IMO Mark Stoops if they can pry him from Kentucky. After that I like Leipold if he can go 6-6 this year or KSU’s Klieman if he has nice year or Matt Campbell.

I guess OC Mark Whipple is reviewing the terms of his contract.

Wonder why they don't make him interim HC (previously UMass HC).

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

He’ll get his money for his two year contract just like Frost. No way he left to go work for a coach on shaky ground without some guarantees. IIRC it was 900K/yr…double his Pitt salary.

Interim HC replacements don’t always come from the coordinator spot. It’s probably just as often they come from some other position on the staff. I’m guessing it allows the coordinators to concentrate on coaching an me not all the other hoopla from a firing.

The real question is where does Frost go to? Does he wander down to Bama and take an analyst position under Saban for the time being?

He will get another shot. His work at UCF will be viewed as the reason why.

It also makes it easier to not hire that guy if he happens to win a few games.

I’m surprised Helfrich didn’t go to UCLA. It’s not as though Kelly didn’t ask.
Oh didn't realize Helfrich was asked by Kelly. I think he's doing color now for Fox. Maybe he doesn't want to get back into coaching unless it's a HC spot? Or maybe he's done with coaching full stop?

That’s fair, lol. I know the Ash era was rough.

You have one of the best Rivals boards in the conference, so I was here reading towards the end of Ash’s last season, wondering if Schiano was going to come home. I was really pulling for you guys, and when it seemed like it wasn’t going to happen, that disappointment hit hard even from the outsider/“Big Ten brother” p.o.v. But out of nowhere, everything changed and somehow the deal got done. How often does that happen IRL? Usually when talks break off, that’s it—it’s over. But Rutgers fans changed that narrative, pretty much through sheer will. To have it end the way it did was one heck of a roller coaster ride and a great feel good story in college football.

I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know, but Rutgers under Schiano the first time was a solid program still on the rise, with huge upside (I still remember watching the ESPN highlights for the Louisville game; got chills), and it looks like you’re getting back to that again. At Nebraska, yeah, we weren’t getting blown out, but so many close losses (5-21 in one score games—how does that even happen??) are just brutal. Our program has been a slow burning dumpster fire since 2017. But when it comes to the Ash/Frost comparison, I think you all knew what a lot of other fans forget: that no matter what the situation, any program is just one strong coaching hire away from being good again. Hopefully that will describe us one day.

imho.. you gotta stop those road-graders you used to recruit and call linemen again. For some reason, wherever you used to get those guys is developing players happy to go out of the region. Somehow, Wisconsin still gets em.

And with ESPN's marketing activities on behalf of the SEC, and Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC... things just got harder in your backyard. Maybe try to steal the lunch from those remaining Big XII schools? Find out where Baylor gets its thugs and... nah.. you don't want them. Maybe California and find out where Wisconsin recruiters hang and go stalker on them. When a "Wisconsin Offer" pops up on Rivals have that fed directly to your guys in the field... hmmm.. we should be doing that too.

Good luck.

Firing Frost was a dumb move. The guy lost two close games and gets fired.
He should have been allowed to finish out the season and then make a decision. They are going to lose a lot of players on the Portal now.
What coach would want to be a HC at Nebraska?

Nebraska is still a name brand and every HC looking to move into a better situation ( prestige and/or money) won't think twice of taking the Cornhusker job if offered.
Coaches trying to revitalize there career will think strongly about taking the position and most coaches who had success somewhere as a HC in the past will have a big enough ego to feel they are good enough to revitalize Nebraska Football and make it a winner.

Mid Major HCs wanting P-5 positions will look at Nebraska as a way to enter the top coaching ranks, those coaches also have egos big enough to feel they will succeed.
Those that worry about the challenge, might pass and look for a safer spot to open.
But most HCs, if not all, didn't become successful at any level doubting their capabilities

Every HC in the business knows losing gets you fired no matter how close most of the loses are. So, in my opinion, Nebraska doesn't have to worry about firing Frost being a reason quality candidates won't step up and try to replace him.

Hugh Freeze has been mentioned and some feel he won't be a canidate, I think Nebraska might just go after him knowing he's a proven winner that has rehabilitated his image ( winning does that) and might take a little less than other top choices to return to the prime time coaching fraternity
This season is his fourth as the Liberty HC and he has put some miles between his troubles and Old Miss dumping him in 2016 to make Nebraska hiring him not really
something their fanbase would get upset about.
Maybe his hiring might give them more hope than hiring another mid major HCs would
.
