With CMcC returning who do we project as the starters and who are the top 3-4 players off the bench next yr?

Starters:
C-Cliff
F-Dean
F- Mag
G- C McC
G- Mulcahy

Rotation: Hyatt, Agee, J Miller, (portal guard)

Thoughts?

I doubt you'll see much of Dean at the 4. He will be needed to back up Cliff. Spencer seems to be the best scorer on the team, so I think he would have to start. So your three guards are Paul, Caleb, and Spencer. The only question then would be who starts at the 4. And unless there is another addition, which there very well could be, my guess is Mag and Hyatt battle it out for that last spot. Both will play a lot

Doubt if either Dean or Mag starts. Think Hyatt starts at the 4, unless we somehow get a backup 5, then Dean starts at the 4. Think Spencer starts at the 2. And Agee is gone.

I have to think that Mulcahy, McConnell, and Omoruyi are close to locks in the starting five, but beyond that I have no idea. I'd expect to see a lot of Hyatt, Spencer, Mag, and Reiber - but don't know which of those round out the starting five. Question will be what we get out of Miller, Palmquist, Simpson, and Woolfolk at the bottom of the 8-to-9 man rotation... and if we grab anyone else from the portal.

Cliff Caleb Paul are all locks

Hyatt I think Pike likes at the 4. He is strong and his defense at the 4 got much better by end of season and is a strong rebounder. Forced things on offense but I think it was him trying to make the most of limited minutes and never got into a flow. He has the skills to be a scorer who can create his own shot.

I love Mag and he could reallyyyy make a jump and be a stud but I can also see him being the 6th man bringing energy and intensity. If he can handle it physically, he might be the breakout player of the year and take that 4 spot from Hyatt if he doesn't step his game up.

Spencer likely starting as a 3 point sniper with a crafty scoring game

Dean backup 5 and possibly some minutes at the 4, but not the mold Pike has used his entire time here at that spot

Simpson and Miller off the bench with Miller playing that defensive stopper roll and needed against quicker PGs. Simpson bringing penetration, slashing, and offense

Oskar on the outside of the rotation looking in unless he can play the 4 and handle rebounding and D inside. Injuries to Mag or Hyatt and he finds himself in the mix

2 open scholarships though so things could change. I can see Pike leaving one open but that still leaves 1 potential roster add

Starters
Cliff, Hyatt, Caleb, Spencer and Paul

bench rotation (in minutes order)
Mag, Reiber, Simpson, Miller, Oskar.

Woolfolk will redshirt unless there is a desperate need. Mag has a chance to start. He will battle Hyatt and Spencer but I would give them the lead to start. Cliff, Caleb and Paul are locks as starters.

This is spot on except if we don't bring in another big Woolfolk will likely have to play. If Cliff or Dean get hurt he would be have to play a scary amount

I think they find another 4/5 to play minutes. If not you’re probably right.

My predictions - non garbage time:

Mag / Hyatt split the minutes at the 4 and back fill the minutes that Spencer doesn’t play.

Simpson / Miller the likely subs when either Paul or Caleb come out of the game. Has to be a confident ball handler against teams with backbones.

Dean backs Cliff up and gets some situational minutes at forward.

Starting lineup isn't the question.

Who is closing games?
Is Pike going to play Spencer (offense) over Mag/Miller (defense) at the end?

Can easily see Mulcahy, Miller, Mag, McConnell, Clif closing out games.

My hope is Miller’s offensive game steps up otherwise his defensive plus is offset by no offensive contributions.

Dean can play both the 4 and the 5. He's been with the team long enough to understand both roles, and he has strengths and weaknesses wherever you place him.

Everyone. Should be more of a team effort scoring this year
With Ron and Geo leaving the team, they are missing the player who isn't afraid to create and take the last shot. I hope Paul works on this during the offseason. He and Caleb are now the team leaders.

I'd imagine the ball with be in Paul's hands in end of game situations. Spencer I want taking big shots but he may struggle to create against B1G competition. Will help space the floor for Paul to create though

Spencer and Simpson are the biggest wild cards in my opinion.

Will they be liabilities on defense? Can they handle the ball at the high D1 level? Will Simpson come in ready to contribute on offense?

The good news is that our worst case scenerio go to line up (if the newcomers don’t pan out) is pretty good now outside of perimeter shooting. Paul, Caleb and Mag together in the backcourt on defense with Hyatt and Cliff would be solid. I think ball rotations will be good too and we’d find ways to score - though lack of 3 point fire power could be a concern.

The issue is going to be when Paul or Caleb get in foul trouble. I don’t think Mag or Hyatt can be relied on to be the number 2 ball handler for extended minutes and neither Paul nor Caleb is really the kind of pure ball handler that can run the offense on his own. We have to hope Miller steps up a little on offense to be more playable or Simpson comes in ready to fill those minutes. Or Spencer is better at ball handling than the scouting report indicates.

I think Spencer will start but it really doesnt matter. It's all about the rotation.

Mulcahy, McConnell, Spencer, Hyatt and Cliff ( my guess)
Mag, Reiber, Miller and Simpson off the bench first
Palmquist and Wolfork.

Imagine a Pete Nance on this team? Boy would that help! We need one more like him!

Let's look at some minutes breakdowns.
200min per game

40min: Clif (29min last year) and backup 5

That leaves 160min:
Caleb - 30min (last year)
Paul - 32min (last year)

98min leftover for:
Reiber (non 5 minutes - on floor same time as Clif)
Hyatt
Palmquist
Miller
Mag
Spencer (was he promised any sort of minimum minutes per game?)
Simpson

Last year was easy - we had 5 players at or above 30min/game.
How HC Pike divides up the minutes will be the key to the season.

Why don't you like Mag? What about Mag doesn't project well moving forward?
The knock is basically just positional.

His handle is poor for a kid whose going to play 1-3. Maybe not as bad as Hyatt’s, but it’s not good. Skinny for the 4. Hard to put him there without a 3 who plays big to complement (like Caleb).

Jumping in on Mag - He looks way too small to play 4 , are we anticipating a growth spurt ?

Do love his energy. Hopefully pouring it into practice so he can maximize his potential.

No - the idea would be us running the 2 SF model with him, Caleb and Cliff.

Spencer is going to play a lot and should score. If he doesn’t score we’re going to really struggle.

Here’s something else to think about — Caleb may become a guy who takes 10-12 shots per game. He has to be better than 40% from the floor.

For this team to be good, Spencer’s success at Loyola has to translate to the B1G and Cliff has to take the next step scoring 15pts/game and developing a reliable mid range jumper

It’s a small subset, but in the games where Geo was out and Caleb had to play a more active role in the ball handling, he produced more offense. Only 6 points at UMass but that’s where he got over the Yips and arguably being forced to have the ball in his hands more might’ve helped him there.

16 vs Clemson, 12 vs Purdue and 13 vs. SHU.

Only scored 5 in the Illinois blow out but also only played 24 minutes in that one.

What on earth have we seen from Mag that suggests he should start?
He plays Pike brand D. Has great athleticism and toughness. Has shown a willingness to attack the rim. His outside shot, while inconsistent, is certainly serviceable and likely to improve. And he isn’t trying to start over Ron - he’s trying to start over Hyatt (most likely) - so the gap there isn’t as large.
