Better link from a better paper (if you can stand the popup ads):

Award is given annually to the best men’s college basketball player in the New York metropolitan area.

"The other two Rutgers players to win the Haggerty were forward Phil Sellers in 1975 and 1976 and guard Quincy Douby in 2006."

Unbelievable that in 35 years we have in had Rutgers players win it 4 times...

And no Princeton player has ever won, which is pretty amazing given their great teams of the 1960s, with Bill Bradley and others. And Bobby Lloyd deserved to win (IMHO) in 1967, when he was one of the leading scorers in the country.

Congrats to Ron! Richly deserved. And he's the first Big Ten to ever win the award.

Princeton players are not eligible for the Haggerty for some reason.

Congratulations to RHJr..

A previous post made me wonder about James Bailey, so I checked it out.... During Bailey's junior year, the award was won by George Johnson of St. John's... Johnson averaged 19.4 pts and 12 reb that year, and was the 12th pick in the 1978 NBA draft.

The next year when James was a senior, the award went to guard Nick Galis of Seton Hall. Galis averaged 27.5 PPG and shot 57.6%FG that season. James Bailey was the 6th pick in the 1979 NBA draft, while Galis was taken in the 4th round with the 68th pick.

The award is only for NY Metropolian team players which means Rutgers is the only Big Ten team eligible.

I know that but it is still a distinction for the Big Ten to have one of its own win the award! Ron represents the NY metropolitan region and the Big Ten Conference. And Princeton is also part of the metro area so I don't understand why they would be excluded. Rider, which is also in Mercer County, had a player win the award in the past, so why not Princeton?

This is for Scarlet Shack and Wheezer. Big Ten Network had top 10 RU basketball players. Kelvin Troy was number 10. Troy or Ron Harper Jr? And anyone else who has watched for40 plus years.

Troy was more outstanding in one area--defense. Meaning he was as tough as anyone in the country. Ron more rounded. Really tough to compare them. I probably lean Ron...

Up until you mentioned a Rider player winning in the past, I would have suggested that Princeton players are excluded since Mercer County is technically located in the Phila metro area instead of the NYC metro area. But they must have used a broader definition of the NYC metro in order to include Mercer Co. when they awarded it to the Rider player previously.
