IDK how I have a bias against bball and pike. Do I criticize pike more than GS, hell yeah. GS is coming off year 2 of a major rebuild, pike coming off year 6. If GS is going 6-6/7-5 and recruiting is getting worse going into year 7 (6-6/7-5 is the equivalent of being a bubble team) then you know damn well you'll hear me criticizing schiano.

Admittedly I also believe bball has a higher ceiling than football. Because basketball is an easier job and we have so many built in advantages. I only started criticizing pike like 2 years ago? And the criticism has always been, I'd like to see him A) be better on offense B) recruit better. These things shouldn't be controversial or be considered being a "troll". Where you guys hate it most is my belief that what the program looks like going into year 7 isn't anything special and that pikes not the only one who could have gotten us on the bubble in year 6. It's okay to admit it

Kyk, you are deliberately trolling now.
Why do you mention “bubble in year 6” instead of mentioning “ncaa Tourny in 3 straight years”? You sincerely believe another coach woulda gotten us on bubble in year 6…great..but how many coaches do toy legitimately believe get us to 3 straight ncaa “appearances”?

We weren’t talking about a point in time, we were talking about filling the RAC and Rutgers stadium from when Pikiell and Schiano took over the programs.

It’s basically a wash. If you put a competitive and entertaining product out there you will fill each by the next season or two.

Pikiell has achieved that. Schiano is still working towards it.

Kyk is saying Schiano is at a disadvantage because he has to fill a 53K stadium lol. 53K!
I agree with him that 53 k is the more difficult task for RU

haha, as I always say, don't talk crazy on the internet unless you'd say the same to someones fact in real life. Issue is, the internet has gotten people too comfortable with talking **** and not getting punched in the face.

Says the guy running around calling everyone who disagrees with him "cupcake" and laughs at them in every other post. You're right though - the internet is sure full of tough talking fidgets.

Given the same resources and coaching at the same time? I simply disagree.

Mike Rice with a war chest to hire a quality staff (his wasn't horrible anyway), a practice facility and a new transfer portal? No doubt in my mind he has similar success in year 4 as pike
Surely, you jest.

It's also outside and for half the games it's cold. I don't mind the cold but some people do haha.

To sell out the football stadium for every home game we'd need the following to happen

1) be a top 25 team
2) playing a ranked opponent
3) weather would have to be good, if there's even rain in the forecast people don't go

^^^ That is alot harder to do than the bball task. Shouldn't be hard to recognize/admit. Weird to disagree imo

Our next true sell out likely isn't until 2024
How about actually move the football

There are about 30,000 regular fans who will come to most games; regardless of the opponent;. I’m making this up but it’s relatively accurate. Up to Another 10,000 will come for the better games on the schedule and that also includes opposing fans from other big 10 teams..

The remaining 13,000 all respond to winning or the thought we can possibly beat a team we are not supposed to beat. The Boston College game on the road to start the season is actually a very important game. It’s either a momentum builder or a big deflation in optimism. Rutgers fans can be great fans but the doubters out there will only come if the momentum is positive and the minute it turns negative, they find or Ed things to do with their Saturdays.

No - your wrong. Your post was in response to a string of comments directly related to my original post about the 30 year drought being due to bad coaching (with reference to Rice).

The fact of the matter is - Rice inherited a 15 win team from Fred Hill (2009-10). He never won more than 15 games in his 3 year stint including his last year which is why I called out your comment about his great turnaround. Pike comparison aside, winning the same number of games as the guy you replace isn’t exactly the definition of a spectacular turnaround in my book. For anyone.
LOL, no you're still wrong. My post was a direct response to a post about Rice killing his career that had no mention of Pike and no mention of your post or posts before. I stated Rice killed both his career and RU hoops that I and many others at the time felt was turning around. I never made any comparison to Pike. I never called the Rice era spectacular either. You got trigger happy and started slamming that team that had a top 20 recruiting class of then sophs returning and was improving in the toughest conference in college hoops at the time. Stop making crap up and trying to move the goalposts.
While true, Rice and Bannon killed their own careers, not Rutgers.
Rice also killed the disaster of a program he really was turning around. While football's improvement was first and foremost, always felt the B1G saw R BB progress too when they decided to invite us in.

You literally just reposted exactly what you said this morning - that Rice killed the program he was “REALLY turning around”. And then reposted what I said which wasn’t harsh or trigger happy at all. I simply commented that in my opinion 15-16 wasn’t demonstrative of “really turning things around” - particularly because 15 wins was right where his predessor left things off 3 years earlier when Rice first arrived.

Sorry guy, I didn't post this morning. Wrong again. I guess you also forgot that the team Rice took over from Hill Jr was after Rosario left . Rice did have one year of Jonathan Mitchell the only legitimate holdover star of the Fred Hill team. Look at the rosters from '09-10 through '12-13, Rice went out and recruited a Top 20 class, rebuilding what Hill left him which was basically nothing except Mitchell. You just keep getting things wrong.

theyre not totally irrelevant but they're not nearly important in 2022 as they were in the 1990's. Having a good big doesn't mean much these days. Does it help? Sure. Is it good to have your best player on your team be a big? NOPE. Very bad
See you take an actual valid point that I think most would agree with.... guards are more important than centers... but then you take it way too far

"a good big doesn't mean much"

Terrible take

Also - you keep changing your point. Now your back to defending your comment that I challenged in the first place - that he “really turned things around”. The one you said I lied about.

I literally said that 15-16 wasn’t exactly demonstrative of a great turnaround in direct response to your comment that he “really turned things around”. Optimism that the program could be heading in the right direction - sure. But IMO still very far from from concluding Rice had truly turned things around.

I’m not sure what your point is with Rosario and Mitchell. Hill gets credit for bringing those guys to RU in the first place, no? Players leave all the time when a new coach comes in. Rice still started reputationally with a 15-16 RU program not a 7 win one. So getting the team back to the level where the prior team left it doesn’t qualify as really turning things around in my book. Having reasons for optimism and “really turning things around” are very different.

The only thing worse than an internet tough guy is someone that would actually act that way in real life…go around talking like that to someone’s face, or actually follow through with threats of violence if someone said something they didn’t like.

Yeah, I skipped a day and a half of this thread for Easter and 60+ new posts appeared, with close to zero information related to Hammond. I didn't bother to read most the new stuff as it just doesn't seem all that important.

This thread really needs a shout out to the unheralded 2019-20 team that never got it’s due in the NCAA tourney due to COVID.

Pike started with a 7 win laughing stock dumpster fire and delivered an NCAA caliber tourney team in his 4th season. That team didn’t have a ton of big time recruits. JY played 16 minutes a game at Texas for 6 ppg. Folks are going to flip out if that’s the kind of player we end up bringing in - someone who was a utility player. Everyone reallyneeds to calm down. We’re going to be adding at least 2-3 players and will have at least 7 returning rotation guys who played on an NCAA team. We may end up taking a step back but we’re also not in terrible shape. Can’t we at least wait and see what the roster looks like after the summer?

how come it's been 10 years since the most outstanding player of the tournament has been a center? How much the big ten, the conference that most utilizes bigs hasn't won a natty in decades? How come, cinderella seems to always be led by guards and not centers? It's always like there's something in common here. Why are you trying to guard that centers are more valuable than guards LOL
Ah yes, Kansas definitely didn’t work through McCormick at all on their way to a national championship.
Oh and the media is the arbiter of the best player of every tournament.

Also I’m not going to check the exact number but the big ten has the 1st or 2nd most final four appearances since 2000. It’s all random for the final 4 on.

I think everyone needs a reality check on the type of guy Jacob Young was as a transfer.

No one would be flipping out if we added someone like him are you for real?

He was firmly IN Texas 8 man rotation, shot over 40% from the floor, and split time with 3 guards who all did the same or better, 2 that were older and one that was a top 50 freshman recruit. He also took over big 12 conference tournament. Their rotation also included 2 NBA bigs taking up a lot of 4/5 minutes. Then Texas added 2 top 100 4 star guards (1 top 50 1 top 100, and another NBA big in their incoming class. He was a monster pickup at the time and we benefited from Texas killing it on the trail. Maybe non college basketball fans and Rutgers fans only slept on him? But I don’t think that was the case because there were leakpeople were saying Young was one of the best players in camp his sit out year.

It was an awesome get by Pike. Would be awesome if Pike can land a guy with that profile again.

And there you go being wrong again--I've never changed my point. Rice had the program turning around--"really" relates to the fact a Top 20 recruiting class was improving and maturing from sophs to juniors. Don't know you're so hung-up on that word, maybe "truly" or "actually" wouldn't trigger you? I don't know what you don't get about losing Rosario the team's leading scorer and having Mitchell for one season when you're trying to say that Rice didn't rebuild the team. Again an expected NIT bid team with a returning Top 20 recruiting soph class core is a turnaround for me after the mess Hill left.

And none of my posts have compared Rice to Pike which you also have been getting wrong.

Hill didn’t leave behind a “mess” anything like what Pike inherited. Again - you keep bashing me and calling me a liar but it seems to just be a difference of opinion here. I don’t consider going from 15-16 to “projected to have a good shot at the NIT” over 3 years to “really turning anyrhing around” but then I also don’t care about recruiting rankings until they translate into results. Hill wasn’t that bad with recruiting. It just didn’t seem to translate into success on the courts. My bar is how the team actually does. Again - seems like just a difference of opinion.

Regardless - perhaps you need a refresher on just how bad of a program Pike inherited. The year before Pike - RU wasn’t just bad. We were laughing stock category bad. 7 wins is not 15 or even 10 or 11. We couldn’t beat bad midmajors. We lost to a 12-18 GW team by 34 points. We were tied with Rutgers-Newark at halftime. Aren’t they D3? In Pike’s case, getting to the NIT would’ve qualified for a major turnaround based on where we started. But he didn’t just do that - he produced 3 straight NCAA caliber teams.

I guess if you are a one year rental, hitching your wagon to a guy who's seat could not be hotter makes more sense than under any other situation.
It always used to surprise me that Georgetown did as well as it does with recruiting. I never felt they had a great atmosphere in their home court. Felt like one of the easiest road places to play.

As I said - I didn’t lie. I just didn’t go back to see the time stamp until you called me a liar. I read your 10:35 PM Saturday post early Sunday morning. That’s when I saw it - 8 hours later. Who cares if it was late Saturday night or Sunday morning though?

This entire string is about RU recruiting Hammond and one particular guy who keeps interjecting - insisting that Pike’s accomplishments at RU have been pedestrian (i.e. any decent coach would’ve done the same).

Your post wasn’t an original post so whether intended or not, it is tied to the discussion you replied to about RU coaching over the past 30 years. I don’t feel like Rice completed some great turnaround - and certainly not relative to what Pike has done. That’s why I called out that 15-16 wasn’t exactly a great turnaround. Rice still had everything in the world to prove on the court - good recruiting class or not.

Are they traditional centers? By no stretch, right? Jokic attempted nearly 300 3's this year at a 34% clip. Embiid dribbles from the three point line and euro steps his way to the cup haha. Look, if you can find me centers like that, sign me up all day. They're extremely extremely valuable. In other words, you're more valuable if you're 7 foot and can play like a guard than 6'4 and play like a guard
