scangy, it's about trajectory. A huge part of trajectory is building a roster. In year 3 of a rebuild, you're still building. Football is so different than basketball too so it's silly. If you take over a program that's hot garbage in the trenches, you can't literally make kids older. The trenches largely aren't plug and play although GS has done a good job this off-season getting some plug and play. Takes a while to "get old" in the trenches. Roster of 85 vs 10 too. apples and orange.

With this said, if Schiano's roster looks like how pike's does going into year 7, I will be the loudest here and youre well aware of that. You've taken two positions here.

1) You must defend pike at every turn
2) Since it's unpopular to be critical of pike, youve taken the position to disagree with everything I say to play the likes game

It's not year 7 for GS it's year 3 vs Year 3 for Pike. Is there going to be progress in football....?? He overhauled the entire OL with 4 new pieces, all have played significant minutes of football......2 WRs from the portal and a bona-fide class in 2022.

I hate to break the news but if you have 4 new starters via the portal on the OL, we should see 24 and 27 point scoring games like normal football teams do....no one is asking football to be in the mid 30s or 40 point ranges.

Does it take 3 years to find QBs, RBs, WRs, TEs who can make plays?? Why is Pike and the portal different than GS and the portal?? We have the same budget for paying coaches, GS got everything he wanted and then some with 8 years before he ran a practice. You flip out when someone who actually produced results, gets an extension and a raise.

And you can easily sell 50K football tickets in NJ for 6 Saturdays a season, with tailgating, great parking, and thousands of students who will support the product, if it's even remotely competitive.....

Stop with the excuses man....if you aren't such a hypocrite about it, no one would care....it's a sad state of affairs that we can't honestly say it takes 3 years to find competitive playmakers on offense. 3 years man, really.....to find an actual QB or two.....?? We aren't even offering QBs in 2022 and 2023 and your head is in the sand......LMAO

Not how it works when you’re getting paid 4 million a year. Welcome to the real world kid.
Pike makes $2.6 mil now, doesnt get to $4 mil until the end of his contract. By comparison, Jay Wright makes $6.5 mil now at Villanova, and has turned down over $8 mil a year from UCLA.

Not true. He'll be making $4 mill in 3 years.

2022-2023: $3 mill
2023-2024: $3.25 +$300K retention bonus, net effectively $3.55
2024-2025: $3.5
2025-2026: $3.75 + $300K retention bonus, net effectively $4.05
2026-27: $3.85 million
2027-28: $3.95 million + $300K retention bonus, net effectively $4.295
2028-29: $4.05 million
2029-30: $4.15 million + $300K retention bonus, net effectively $4.45 million

He also has essentially $15,000,000 guaranteed as his buyout is $15,000,000. I posted it a couple weeks back but this is a top 10 highest buyout, (it might be top 5, I forget I have to look again). Are you trying to make an argument that since he doesn't make as much as jay wright that he's not making enough to raise the fvcking bar?! haha.

He's a top 20 highest paid coach.

I'll play your game.

For perspective, if we use median salaries of contracts (aka i'm not using $3 mill or $4.45, but rather for pike I'm using the median which is between 3.85 and 4.05), Steve Pikiell makes more than Scott Drew LOL.

Assuming you got your Jay Wright numbers from this site which also mentions UCLA's offer. So lets be fair about it and show people where pike's new contract puts him. Article was published before pike signed his extension https://briefly.co.za/106888-list-top-25-highest-paid-college-basketball-coaches.html

Exactly, but only a fool would be looking at a roster with 4 open scholarships and making declarative statements about the team

This is what the Pike haters are doing bc they don't like Pike. Pike has been nothing but successful so they need to try to pounce when they can.

Wait to see who we land, then hate on Pike if you don't like who we ultimately bring in. That would be fair and level headed.

For example, I was not impressed with Agee last year and said that bringing him in as the best we could do was concerning. That's fair criticism.

The anti Pikes are essentially criticizing non-existant players / empty scholarship spots at this point as failures
Nobody was better than Ralph! In the locker room reports!

Not sure why you keep trying to make this point but it’s not a good one lol.
if schiano could sell "we sell out every home game" you don't think his recruiting would be even better? It's an asset GS can't sell but pike can. Problem is pike can't make anything of it

Bro it’s Schiano’s job to sell out the stadium. Put a competitive and entraining product on the field and we will easily sell out 53K. The point is we’re not there yet (and not that close imo) but you completely give Schiano a free pass.

Do you think Pikiell started with a sold out RAC when he took over? We were one of the worst division 1 programs in basketball lol.

Haha.

Chrebet and Kyk will continue to be wrong with Rutgers basketball. Pike is going to be here for the long haul. Not with flashy recruiting ratings but with guys who fit his system. Recruiting will improve but it’s never going to be good enough for people who only look at recruiting stars.

Kyk even leaves out facts about the buyout.....it starts at 15M as in today, but it shows commitment by RU, since Pike would be required to pay back that buyout amount if he took another job......thats the way buyouts work....just like every other buyout in America for coaches, it decreases based on the money earned for the next season. So for whatever the total comp paid for the next season is, the buyout drops.

The buyout shows commitment by the school and commitment by the coach to the RU program. Only a fool would complain about a win-win,.especially when all salaries for all major programs are escalating at a high rate. Waiting another year, only exposes RU to either being poached or paying what some other school sets the market for, instead of RU setting it.

If there is a direct connection to saving $750k over 2 years to winning or how paying slightly less helps, I would love to hear about it. This isn't a salary capped sport, the media rights and megadeal coming in the next 24 months, makes this deal very realistic and reasonable.

Keep in mind, Michigan State is paying Mel Tucker how much money?? LMAO....it's a different sport but the same conference and same competition in our league in football....10 years, 95M.....Franklin....10 years guaranteed 70M, value up to 85M....

Maybe it's me, but the trend is up on coaches, not penny pinching.....

IMO it’s the recruits that make the rac great..it’s never been the rac that brings in great recruits. It’s still an outdated dump.

The practice facility is probably a great draw to recruits than the rac

In 3 years time, Pike won’t be anywhere near top 20 salary, because all of these numbers are escalating at a rapid rate based on the growing pool of future revenue. And I have asked you this question before about who we could could get that would be clear upgrade on Pike based on what what we were willing to pay and the best you were able to come with was Mike Boynton, which most people thought was a complete joke.

If you’re going to infer me being dumb then please don’t make **** up.

Pikiell didn’t start anywhere close to 4K season tickets. We barely averaged over 4K a game back when he took over (counting students).

You’re completely ignoring the facts that:

- Our football fanbase is way bigger than basketball (just check the amount of followers on IG, Twitter etc.)
- There are only 6 football games a year
- Football is an event. Thousands of people attend that aren’t even that into it because of the tailgating or social aspect
- Almost all football games are on the weekend. Much easier for fans to attend, especially fans that live more than 15 minutes away (as opposed to weeknight basketball games)
- Most football games are during September/October
- Football student section is 10K

So no, it’s not really easier to sell out an 8K basketball arena. Even if it was, selling out the RAC game in and game out, and having one of the best home court winning percentages, is a testament to Pikiell and the success he has achieved.

I mean, you’re not dumb, right?

why is every single player we recruit a must get except for the players we actually get?
Cliff. And everyone praised Pike and rightfully so.

I hear Alvarado is in the rotation for the Pelicans this year. Didn’t hear much about him at Georgia Tech but perhaps that is a function of his team not doing much?
Alvarado was very well regarded at GT especially late in his career year got a lot of national pub during GTs ACC tournament performance. Think maybe you just don’t follow other conferences too closely in this case.

“People come to our games now” isn’t a big selling point to a recruit. Neither is “We have a place to practice now.” At best, they’re two less things competing schools can actively use against you.

I’m trying to understand you here man. Are you saying that the prior 30 years of losing before Pike was the fluke - that in effect, pretty much any halfway decent coach would’ve been able to restore RU to respectability as quickly as Pike did? The Rutgers job had the stigma of career killer attached to it before Pike took it. Nobody wanted it - it wasn’t like Pike breezed in and cashed in on a winning lottery ticket that everyone would’ve aspired to have.

did I ever judge pike years 1-3 or did I/we all give him a pass? The rebuild for football that GS inherited is harder than the rebuild for bball that pike inherited. By much? no. But when you have to flip a garbage roster of 85, it's harder than flipping a garbage roster of 10, right? Filling 53,000 is harder than filling 8,000, right?

Would I have been giving pike a soft landing if I said he'll probably go 6-14/7-13 in b1g play in year 3? Bad post petey
The football vs. basketball numbers thing is always a bad take here. A very lazy take that shows little thought or insight. Bad post Kylie.

The 2 recruiting pitches that work in today's game are this is how much $$ we can give you (in NIL) and this is how many people we have turned pro. If RU can get a few kids to the league and see a pathway, that is when recruiting will change. Until then, enjoy the development of underrecruited kids that some recruiting years will be incredible and others a disaster. Luckily with the portal, it is easier to pivot.

Since Tom Young, the only coach who got another head coaching job after leaving Rutgers was Waters.
He’d say that the guys we brought in just weren’t good with most not having head coaching success at the college level. He’d tell you that Mike Rice was on the same trajectory with 15-16 (similar to Pike’s year 3 record) in year 3 about to break through which would be complete garbage. Most teams don’t jump from 15-16 to in the field in a year. We weren’t supposed to make the tourney in year 4. Pike exceeded expectations there big time. Nobody would’ve projected Rice to get there the next year either had the scandal not hit. And Rice was a successful coach prior to RU.

Bottom line is - there’s no data to even hint at the point KYK has been trying to make having any validity. If you look at the history of new coaches taking a crack at any basement dweller in a major conference, the count of guys who had success (defined as getting the team to the NCAAs at any point in their tenure) would be very low - even when you include one hit wonders (NW).

KYK would say that RU is on track to be NW with the difference being the extra COVID year that the graduating kids on NW didn’t get. Of course, he’d be wrong there too as Geo was the only super senior on the team last year. But the thing is - even if he turns out to be right and we don’t repeat the success with the next group of kids, not extending Pike’s contract would still be the wrong decision because without extending it we may as well just fire Pike now. For his system to work - you need to be able to bring in kids who buy in to development - especially on defense. He’d have no shot at getting those kids (I’m talking even about 3 stars) if it was obvious that RU wasn’t committed to keeping Pike around for the long haul and there was a possibility of him bolting.

Kyk predicted we would win 3 games in football yet he says he is not giving Schiano a pass. As Hawk mentions, our offense is downright offensive and against most good teams, cannot move the ball. This despite having an offensive coordinator making 1 million a year.

Greg brings in a top notch QB and a bunch of portal offensive lineman. I would expect that now our offense should be able to score some points. That’s if Noah is relegated to coaching instead of playing, however (by all reports) it does not seem like Whimsett is going to definitively win this job. Having Noah as our qb again and having another bad offensive line, would give Kyk plenty of reason to lay into Greg similarly to the way he talks about Pike

Rice also killed the disaster of a program he really was turning around. While football's improvement was first and foremost, always felt the B1G saw R BB progress too when they decided to invite us in.

KYK may be the biggest instigator the Internet has ever seen. Clown takes on Twitter. Even worse takes here. There's no way he believes the crap he writes. Or does he?
Didn’t Kyk get into an online spat with FB recruit Jojo Bermudez and then claimed that Jojo started it against him? Not one of his finest moments.

Sometimes it’s best to just step away from the keyboard.

I’m not interested in knocking Pike because I like him. Instead, my question is simply this:

At what point do we stop making the same excuses for our program (not Pike). We’re in the B1G, we’ve won a lot of big games the last 3 years, we’ve been a tournament team 3* years in a row, we have a brand new practice facility, we sell out every home and have a great home court advantage, we’re a very good school and we’re in one of the largest media markets in the country?

I don’t know but it seems to me the time has now passed for bringing up prior issues. There’s a lot to sell today.
