RUT—RU05 and Bethlehemfan stated guys were open, Rut. They weren’t. Yes, Paul should have called TO.
Caleb was open. Harp was actually open but he waited too long. Geo was also open and I believe we had a time out.
Stop the play at 2:57. Geo going hard to the rim with a guy on his back. Paul misses him. Caleb going to the corner with a guy 3 feet away from him, behind and inside him while the 6'10" guy cuts off geo. Paul misses him. Ron flashing straight to the ball while the 6'10" guy still cutting off geo. Paul misses him.
3 guys all open at separate times during the play and paul missed each of them.

I just dont understand what people want. Do they want pikiell to setup a great play where every player on the court is wide open and no one within 5 feet of them so paul can half *** a pass in bounds. You have five seconds to get the ball in bounds and you make split second decisions. Geo, Ron and Caleb were all open for a second. Unfortunately thats all you get to make the play.
Pikiell should never allow paul to take the ball out of bounds again under pressure.
Reading through the game thread I feel the same way about discussing Mulcahy.
That’s very tough at game speed and real time with a defender in your face.

Most things that go on in a game are at game speed.

Lining up four guys a minimum of 30 feet from the ball made us to defend because they knew we were going to toward the ball, and just had to follow us laterally

Four things:
1) Play design was horrendous;
2) no one was open;
3) Paul should have called time out;
4) Why do you guys have such hard-ons for Paul?
I'm certainly not saying that I'd be able to make a play there.
But we see guys make high level plays in difficult situations all the time.
That's what sports is all about, making plays.
Looking at the replay Ron was pushed in the back, that is why he is going forward in the air instead of up. It doesn't take much of a push when your weight has left your feet. If he is not pushed he catches the ball.

The play was a product of what happened against PSU. If the PSU turnover doesn’t happen, we probably don’t get too cute there. It’s fascinating to watch how a scenario you’ve done countless times all season all of a sudden becomes very difficult when the game is on the line in the biggest games of the year.
As bad as that play was, the play that got PM the wide open 3 was terrific. Unfortunately, if the inbound play was better, we don’t need that 3. That’s life

Bottom line is we took ND to double OT not getting our best from several players or our bench.

I just clicked thru that play by fractions of seconds over and over. First time I've done it. Your suggestion that all three guys were so open is horse ****. Was there a direct pass into a covered Geo. Yes. Tight. Pass into corner covered Caleb for a double team? Yes. Pass over the top of the ND big guy was the choice.
NEVER should have been put in that position.

Ps. I went back and watched the defense on those last second ND rebounds and processions. Might want to look at them closer and see who was guarding and who was standing and watching.
Same as last year. Don't choke at the end and make a deeper run. Sorry. That's coaches job to settle them and put them in place to win. Yes players have to execute. But coaches need to put them in position first. Pike falls back on basic stuff he's done over and over and lacks the late game creative calling.
That’s what we all know is the toughest part to accept knowing we had a team that could make a deep run and we all wanted to see it happen.
Exactly. We have an excellent coach and really good players. We lost in double it to a very good team. This is how people deal with the grief. Coulda woulda shoulda. Bargaining anger etc. logic doesn’t come into play too often.
We have no idea if the players executed what was drawn up. I know the last fiasco inbounds there was a place for a clear SCREEN ACTION that was part of it and instead of screens, it was like players avoided contact until Geo and Cliff ran into eachother.

Cliff and Caleb shouldn’t be involved as an option in a guaranteed foul situation
Except that Cliff could outleap anyone covering him especially when ND had their center on Paul at the baseline. Still do not understand why a stack with several options is not used.
If the three other options do not come open a toss/lob to Cliff is an easy pass to make. He is not a great foul shooter but with the lead we just needed to get the ball in.
