I said it theee times in the game thread. I guess Pike just picked his poison and didn’t want ND to go off from three, but geezus, we were getting brutalized on pick and roll and drive down the lane. Why not mix in some zone just to throw them off a bit?
Because 2 is less than 3.
We lost because guys didn’t box out multiple times
Just for a couple of possessions to get them out of rhythm
Except layup is an 85% shot, and three pointer is 35-40%.
And like Shack said, just mix in the zone to keep them off balance.
Brey our coached Pike badly and we still had multiple chances to win. The talent level was clearly on our side. And BTW I like Pike, but he refusal to do something else cost us particularly when he shortened the bench in the second half.
Big picture is when you don't have an ability to get or stay in front of your man on defense, it becomes very difficult to win games.
I thought Mulcahy took some steps forward this year but even with a win over Notre Dame, Bama has 3 guards that are as quick as the frosh guard Wesley for Notre Dame.
It becomes an issue when you have a roster that may be not as exposed to speed in the B1G, but there needs to be an upgrade in the overall footspeed at the guard and general skill levels going forward.
Pike squeezed as much as he could out of this roster, has to be eye opening however and if you have one player who can't defend Notre Dame off the dribble, it becomes tough.....
Will be interesting to see how this roster gets retooled, but watching SEC and Big 12 guards, the speed and defense is light years ahead of where RU really needs to be. It's not too prevalent in the B1G, which is more size and power, but if RU wants to advance and become more versatile outside of the conference, it's has to be upgraded this offseason.
Overall, disappointing finish tonight, but proud of the seniors and team/staff, in restoring RU basketball on the map. Have to take next steps forward this offseason.

Don't think anyone expected us to get exposed by dribble penetration so much. In hindsight, maybe could have used Miller for some more minutes.
Yes, and the Paul at point experiment must end, Hawk…abused all night, and turned it over so much tonight. Yes, he hustles, but he’s not the answer. Let’s hope Simpson as a freshman can bring the goods we need.
Do you think Ron would benefit from another year? I do. He didn’t rebound all night from 4… that’s a weakness, as well as consistency.

Not much ball and player movement on offense either. As a result it’s hard for us to get 2’s when we need them other than lobs to Cliff. It’s usually a lot of one on one dribble moves that often result in contested shots or turnovers. Instead we have to settle for hero 3’s.
We switched way more often than we usually do on defense tonight and it wasn't effective.
ND seemed to just run past our players consistently. It's like our guards were looking for help that wasn't there. I really have not seen this in 3 years. Either we were tired or it was scheme. I feel.like it had to be scheme because everyone whiffed on the guy they were covering. Except Caleb and Hyatt.

Big ten guard play overall is not that great and big often doesn’t play 5 out which gives our less athletic guards a tough defensive assignment every defensive possession.
I was thinking a 1-3-1 zone on ND last possession. Sorry for your loss. I was rooting big time for a Rutgers win.
All year RU helped on dribble penetration to prevent layups. The strategy tonight was to overplay the perimeter to deny the three point line. That took away the help defense because RU’s defense was too spread out to recover And help. In hindsight, that may not have been the best strategy.
Agree. This confounded me. I thought if Pikiell did this, this would have disrupted ND's ability to attack inside like they were doing throughout the game.

It worked in previous games with good shooters. If nothing else it settles the defense down a bit and not scrambling around getting tired.

I am not going to pile on Pike like many of these bandwagon fans are doing but this is what puzzled me the most.
We struggled early in the year with our d and it was the switch to mixing in zone th at really makes our D lock in. I guess they would get open looks but it should’ve been used for a possession or 2

Number. I didn't see any zone either and was wondering the same thing.
Number 2. ND shot 6 0f 19! from 3 while killing us over and over again with drives. Would it have hurt to try some zone to see if a better defense given what was ACTUALLY happening in the game?
Number 3. I also don't recall seeing but one press.

Pike and staff went away from our bread and butter defense. I'm sure this will haunt them. It's sure as hell haunting me.

These are all good points. My guess is that since ND generally has won via the 3 Ball this year - think of them as an Iowa light with almost every player able to hit an open look from 3. Pike chose to stay mostly in a Man / Switching D to prevent this. ND spread their guys on the arc and played a high pick and roll which was extremely effective since we were without Cliff for much of the first half and even when he was in, our interior D was left open.
I'm unsure about the lack of press - and I was wondering the same during the game. Maybe ND on film has been very good busting the press this year.
Yeah, I never felt good about this game after our 8 pt lead evaporated early in second half. I kept wondering why no zone. That got us back in the game vs Indiana when we couldn't stop TJD.

Avery Johnson pointed out during the game that you know what you're going to get from RU defensively because they never switch it up or give you different looks.
