Just saw on TV 6 Army Cadets sounds like football team members in a home rental in FL for spring break OD on fentanyl laced cocaine.
2 didn't take it but suffered health issue giving their friends mouth to mouth

Of course it does. These are the future leaders of our Army and many will be leaders of our county, when they see the behavior of the current crowd in Washington you have your head in the sand if you don't think it has an influence on what they view as acceptable behavior.

This might be the most out of touch thing I've ever read. Kids have been doing cocaine forever, it has nothing to do with which corrupt jackasses happen to be in power at the time.

Fentanyl goes into everything these days. Coke? Added fentanyl. Xanax? Added fentanyl. Mollie? Added fentanyl. I even read a story a few weeks ago about a 14 year old OD'd because the weed he bought had traces of fentanyl in it because it was processed by dealers who were also handling fentanyl on the same table. Scary ****.

Interesting to read the NYT article about this event

They go into an obfuscating tangent about OxyContin and Purdue Pharma - who have nothing to do with Fentanyl deaths. Most Fentanyl deaths (shhh its a secret) are from illicit Fentanyl.

"Most recent cases of fentanyl-related overdose are linked to illicitly manufactured fentanyl, which is distributed through illegal drug markets for its heroin-like effect. It is often added to other drugs because of its extreme potency, which makes drugs cheaper, more powerful, more addictive, and more dangerous." CDC

Exactly.

Fentanyl comes from China - they get it to the Mexican Cartels who easily get it over broken and overwhelmed border (a reason Fentanyl deaths are skyrocketing ). Then they specifically target middle class kids, college kids, musicians, young execs etc. Dealers are told to look inconspicuous (no neck tattoos, violence etc). There are specific reasons China does this and its not accidental.

Purdue and Oxy started this epidemic. Fentanyl is the latest iteration.

Having a 21 yr old niece that OD'd with fent laced Cole this stuff is no joke. To this day I cannot understand why people will ingest something into their bodies where you have no idea what it is or where it comes from. Just very perplexing

To believe these cadets were influenced by their government( leaders) is just not thinking clearly.I ‘ll make one statement which if those on here answer honestly will prove otherwise. How many of you have ever tried anything drug related not prescribed or known to be in contaminated? Go back in time to high school or college days 60’s upward. Kids were no different than these military cadets. They should realize any drug off the street is most likely laced with fentanyl. Educated but not really educated. Smart but not really smart. 100 k deaths in the USA last year due to this deadly drug.

The responses on this thread from some posters just proves how far our society has fallen. Service Academy cadets are not supposed to be your average stupid “kids” on spring break. These are the county’s future leaders, from the moment they enter the Academy they make a commitment to maintain the highest ethical and morale standards. The fact that some of you don’t see the parallels between their failure to live up to their commitments and our current leadership in Washington and throughout this nation is truly scary.

The cadets were on Spring Break vacation acting like college kids, which they are. If they thought the coke they bought included fentanyl I’m sure they wouldn’t have taken it.

The stakes are much higher today when doing drugs. That goes for everyone regardless of age, race or status in life.

The cadets made a mistake. That’s as far as my judgment will go on this issue. Hope they will recover and be ok.

Even the academies are taking a significant downturn. I’m guessing some very uncomfortable meetings and discussions, with all hands, at Thayer Hall to last a while…

The insular nature of that place has its benefits but many drawbacks…

Yes they should be smarter or wiser but the reality is they are just kids. That brain isn’t fully developed until around 25 or isn’t that the science? I was married at 21 had our first child at 22 but as mature as I believed we were then…we were still just kids.

But they aren’t that regular kid. That’s the point some of us are making in the thread.

Or they aren’t supposed to be considering where they are matriculating.

They have been doing this for unfortunately generations . Have witnessed numerous parents almost brag joyfully about their use of recreational drugs and alcohol in college . I remember those days well in 60’s -70’s. Peer pressure was then and now.

The ONLY time I had drugs was for a short period of time after a hernia operation.Neve r felt the need. I DID DRINK to excess a few times in my young 20's.My weight training workouts gave me enough endorphine boosts to keep me energized.Want to feel good? WORK OUT.. Drugs are for PAIN.If it is psychological pain and therapy doesn't help, WORK OUT. .I COULD CONTINUE AD INFINITUM,BUT i DO NOT WANT TO OFFEND ANY ONE ON THIS BOARD. GOD BLESS US ALL.

This is a really big problem. I dont think most realize how casual cocaine use is amongst people in their 20’s. Im one of veryyyyy few people i know who doesnt do cocaine. I **** you not, if im in a bar in nyc of 100 people on their 20’s, i’d put the number at 60 of them will do cocaine that night.

Youll be out at a bar or a house party and its just everywhere and everyone is doing it. People will call u soft or a ***** for not doing it but no way im taking that chance. Its become so commonplace that fentanyl is getting into cocaine. Its gotten worse. There is speculation that china is actually largely responsible for cutting it in.

but bottomline, share stories like this with your friends, its simply not worth it.

Yes they still are regular kids… perhaps brighter but not smarter in the areas of drug use. You and several others are putting them on a pedestal . Don’t use their SAT or high school rankings to think they are exempt from stupidity. Did you ever serve in the military ? Did you believe those 23-28 year old officers were much different than an enlisted man? Out of uniform they were no different.

My friend,it is ALL about self control.Most adults can use it wisely. Those that can't cause the problems in this world.One has to select right from wrong,good from bad and live life accordingly.

There in lies the realist in me. Being book smart disciplined does not equate into logic and horse sense. In today’s society we place too much trust in the ability of “ kids “ in the military to rationalize . In time that training kicks in . In places like a beach in Ft. Lauderdale with booze , women and drugs no that goes out the window. Did you ever party with liquor and drugs around? If you are on a college campus that is probably a given. Maybe not at Annapolis, West Point or Colorado Springs. Being book smart does not equate to being horse sense smart. Maybe the military needs to increase education on street drugs and their effects and impacts to one’s health.

2 milligrams of Fentanyl is fatal. For reference, a teaspoon of salt is 2325 milligrams. If you're not a chemist handling this in a lab and know exactly what you're doing, you will eventually kill a lot of people.
