Plays his starters 40 mins and doesn’t use his bench.

I understand he’s relied on his core players all season and they beat us short handed but absurd to play your starters for a whole game in a conference tournament.

They looked like crap the last 6 + minutes of the game and we’re held to 51 pts. I would be pretty pissed if I was a Minnesota fan or the 6th/7th guy sitting on the bench.

*Edit: He made 1 sub for 1 minute.

I sat with BK and Janet for opening night of Big 10 Tourney and BK realized late in the first half that Minnesota coach did not pull his starters. It continued until 4 minutes to go in game when Willis was pulled for a minute. I don’t know if this has ever happened.

We also both agree that Penn State HC is very good - unfortunately

They pretty much went 8 deep all season outside of garbage time…and they were missing a starter, and their 7th and 8th guys. Really tough spot for them tonight.

The broadcasters tonight mentioned that IUPUI played all 5 starters for 40 minutes last week in their Horizon Tournament game at Oakland.

The starter that was out, Stephens, actually came down with a last minute migraine. As the game started, he wasn’t on the bench, but joined them mid game. He’s the one sub they made, but came out after 51 seconds.

It was a weird game because our game is slowing it down, but it also kills me watching the game get slowed down against a team with no bench.

Agree he seems like a good dude and I think he’s gonna build a solid program in a couple years.
I think it was Shrewsherry (so?) who said in an interview I saw or read that Pike was his model on how he wants to build his program . Too bad he only aspires to be mediocre.

That’s different, they literally didn’t have enough players - they had actually put out a public cry for students to have open tryouts a couple weeks ago to just get warm bodies. Another embarrassing basketball school from Indiana

Agreed. And Shrewberry scares me. Alotta similarities to RU a few years ago. PSU might be a problem soon.
Kind of there as well although I wonder how much a basketball player will want to go to Penn State. 2nd fiddle sport there with nice arena (I guess) but sterile environment.

Can he recruit the talent needed to be more than a respectable team? Not sure time will tell. He has done a very good job it seems with the culture and play in year one with the other coach’s players.

Minnesota had two rotation players get hurt before the season started (Ihnen and Fox) and they were not a particularly deep team to begin with considering basically everyone left when Pitino was fired.

This reminds me of the threads on the football board, so and so is stinking is up while this other guy is on the bench, what is Schiano thinkng? Coach sees them every day, he knows what he’s got, he’s an experienced coach and has been around a lot of basketball, if he thinks his starting 5 dead tired gives him a better shot at winning than anyone on his bench, that’s his call

I like Shrewsberry a lot but it should be noted that PSU was the 2nd most experienced team in the conference this year. We will see how he develops players and builds a program.

Well considering his team looked dead and like complete crap and the last 6 minutes I don’t think his call was the correct one.

He doesn't have a bench normally only plays 7 guys and last night one of the starters had a migraine and didn't even play
