Montez Mathis has to be feeling some regret

Myles Johnson left for academic reasons and is playing major minutes for a final four contender and Jacob Young probably doesn’t care about Rutgers and was just trying to advance his pro prospects. But Montez could have had lifetime legend status if he stayed but he gave it all up to play for a crappy St John’s team who won’t go to the tournament. I’m sure he made the best decision for himself at the time but I kind of feel bad for him.

Tez just wanted to play more minutes. Can’t fault him. Also the offense at SJU was a much better fit for him.
Yea I get why he left but he’s only averaging 3 more minutes and his stats are basically the same as last year. His shooting percentage is a little higher but not much difference other than that.

Agree.. MM has gotta feel like he is missing out of these great RAC moments and the atmosphere. Plus, he would have had great contributing minutes on the floor, knew the offense, and had nowhere to go but up. Wish him well, but might always be a story we don't know.

Montez did what he thought was best for himself and whether or not he regrets transferring to St. John's, it might be his choice of the program he transferred to that he regrets.

It's a shame because he was one of Pike's first signature recruits at the time, so I would have liked to see him finish his career here. He would have had an important role on this year's team. But if wasn't happy, you can't force him to stay. And that wouldn't have been good for him or the program.

It turned out to be a real shame. He would’ve been a big help on this roster.

Last year, he sort of ended up being odd man out and didn’t handle it well. With JY taking 30 mins too we didn’t have that much time for him. Miller would’ve kept his red shirt if we had Tez this year. I’ll go out on a limb and also say we don’t lose Lafayette or UMass with him available. Tez played defense.

Tez wanted to shoot the ball more.

I chalk him leaving up to his family/network emphasizing that a lot.

I wish him nothing but the best. Same I do with Myles and Jacob.
He didn’t leave becaueee he wanted to shoot the ball more and in fact shot it less at St. Johns.

what he ended up doing and why he left can be 2 different things no?

I dont have any inside info (and should have said that), but if what his support group said during games is anything like the advice he got, then a HUGE reason he left was to shoot the ball more.

Think the fast paced offense there at St. John’s suited him better. He could of carved out a nice piece killing some of our scoring droughts and driving to the lane. Also played good D. Would of been a. Nice piece this year.

wish him luck, St. John’s def under achieved this year.

Grateful for what Montez did in a Rutgers uniform.

He could have helped us at points this year, especially at times when we needed a spark or some offense, but much like Jacob Young he is what he is at this point.

Overall I don’t really think we missed him this year. Hopefully he’s happy with his decision to go to St. John’s.

Yep.

The locker room rift that was *said* to have been created by Geo and Ron.

We heard it a lot last year, but oddly haven’t heard about it much the past couple of months.
and that moron Pikiell gave in to it!

Pike is SO LOST that he only navigated us to the most wins we've ever had in the B1G and a double bye.

PIKE NEEDS TO WAKE UP!!!!

Oh really? So WHY exactly did he transfer from Rutgers ?
I have no inside info on this but my guess is that Tez and Pikiell had an offseason chat about what Tez would want his role to be and what Pikiell saw his role to be and the two were not that well-aligned and so he entered his name in the transfer portal, with Pikiell's blessing/support. Mike Anderson contacted Mathis and talked about his up-tempo offense and it seemed like it would be a better fit so he jumped on it. Then once he was on St. John's his minutes/shot volume was limited by the same things that held him back here: he's not a good jump shooter, he's not a good finisher at the rim, and he's not a good foul shooter. St. John's also added another guard late in the transfer cycle, two months after Mathis committed.

Yes I forgot about the Pikiell angle.

He was *said* to have not given guys like Young and Mathis a fair shake or opportunity because he played favorites.

So Young and Mathis go on to new programs, with an extra year under their veteran belts, and only do just as much (or less in some regards) than they did at Rutgers. But really nothing more.

Pikiell man!

Edit - this is not to take anything away from Young or Mathis and what they did here. But to laugh at the posters who claimed non-stop that they didn’t get a fair shake or enough opportunity.

To be honest I totally forgot about him. That is how much of an impact he had on our program. We did not miss him one iota this year.

the only player we truly miss was myles. He would have been a huge back up for Cliff.

I am telling you...Pike has a a low ceiling, and is just completely clueless on offense.

FIRE PIKE!

agree...and i would also guess it had to do with Tez wanting more of a role on offense (hence my comment on more shots).

I dont think my take is controversial. and, I loved Tez and the tenacity he brought to our team. I wanted him to stay...but only if he was ready to accept his role.

Never got the Young didn’t get a fair shake. He had a short leash at time due to his tendencies to get outta control pump out 5 TOs unforced then go on a wild scoring streak. I think our stable of guards at the coaches spots did wonders for him. He also played I believe 30+ Min a game. So he definitely got a fair and even favorable shake

You guys can’t help yourselves can you?

Some guy comes out and says Montez wanted more shots, when he goes to St. John’s and takes less shots in more minutes at a better clip, and then you jerk yourselves off for ten posts about rumors from last year.

Montez left because he wasn’t that tight with all the guys though he was with some and felt he had an opportunity close by that didn’t upend his life and suited his basketball needs.

Mathis saw his career going in the wrong direction at Rutgers. He went from regular starter to a reserve playing diminished minutes once Caleb came back. He was at risk of losing even more minutes with Paul taking over the offense and Jaden Jones expected to have a bigger role than he ended up having. I don’t blame him for leaving, and he probably did a lot more at St John’s this year than he would have done at Rutgers.

I disagree. There were a lot of rotation minutes that I felt we were hanging by a thread offensively and defensively.
You’re telling me he doesn’t help us in those DePaul/Lafayette/UMass stretch where we lose 3 games to crap teams by a total of 9 points?

So it didn’t have anything to do with the rift that Geo/Ron created in the lockeroom or that Pikiell played favorites and didn’t give him the opportunity or minutes he deserved?

Well then I’m glad you’ve come around and are no longer telling us those things non-stop :)

It did. I said it in a nice way for your benefit. He didn’t like going to the bench in the midst of playing the best basketball of his career. This is all part of his basketball needs.

Agree...He is the same player at Oregon....Really Good and really bad at times.

Ball still stays in his hands way too much.

He wanted to play, not necessarily shoot. That’s not fair. Yes - he took his share of wild shots for us but part of that was about frustration with not playing,

The numbers are deceiving. Typical blended average trickery. He wasn’t playing anything close to 21 mpg by the end of the season at Rutgers. He played a ton early when Geo and RHJ were hurt and Caleb planned to redshirt.

I always wonder, how is it that some of you know with such great certainty why Mathis (or any other player) does what they do? I mean, my closest friends and family probably couldn't accurately tell you why I do what I do. Hell, I'm not even 100% certain why I do everything I do.

Would it bad of me to express a certain level of skepticism that anybody, except perhaps Mathis, has any clue why Mathis did what he did or how he feels about it now?
