I’m still not understanding. Torvik is predicting we go 12-8 but at the same time only predicting a 10% chance of making the tournament. How could the model be landing there?

While his projections round to 12-8 they are really 11.71-8.29. So we are going 11-9 in a fair number of his simulations and even 10-10 a non-negligible amount. On top of that our power ranking sucks so we are losing in the first round of the BTT fairly often. On top of that his model is more bearish on our current position than most analysts are: he has us as the #7 team out if the season ended now and projected as the 10th team out. He probably has us missing the tournament in most of the sims where we end up 12-8 + 0-1. I plugged in L L W L W L and the result has us well out.

I’m still not getting there. I know his model isn’t a perfect match to ESPN’s prediction model, but yesterday before Illinois the output that one was showing around a 7% chance of getting 4+ more wins out of 6. 13-7 has to be lock status - I understand 3-2 or better isn’t the most likely outcome, but Torvik can’t be predicting no chance of those perms can it? It’s not adding up.

I think/hope bart having a tough time with Rutgers's current resume. It still shows us .1 wins below the bubble.

At some point - Baker’s absence from many of those earlier games has to at least be acknowledged. This Illinois rematch really brings it to light. He didn’t have a great game - 2-7 and no 3s - but adding 35 minutes of Geo’s defense and ball handling on our team makes a tremendous difference. Would’ve made the first Illinois and Seton Hall games much more competitive to have him. And it’s really unlikely we blow a 17 point lead to UMass with Geo playing.

Don’t get me wrong - this team’s Achilles heel all season has been playing down to the competition - with or without Geo. That’s different from blowing an established lead though (UMass) and it’s hard not to give RU the benefit of doubt on the Illinois and Seton Hall blow outs. With Geo playing - I think we’re undefeated against top 50 teams?

Given the sheer number of players who missed games for COVID/protocols, I can't imagine the committee is going to be able to track all of that.

I don’t think it will be tracked per se but when you look closely at specific resumes for seeding or the last few in the field it will have to be considered. Kofi missed a bunch of early games. You can’t tell me Marquette’s win over Illinois without him playing should count the same as beating them with Kofi.

Sort of a slippery slope. Injuries, yeah, I can see accounting for those. Suspensions, absolutely not.

Not for the team with the suspension, of course, but the win for the opponent is a different story. Not sure you can classify a win over Illinois minus Kofi as an elite win. They are still a pretty good team without him, but they wouldn’t be anything close to a national contender.

until potentially now…….have we had more injuries than the “average team”?
No - but I’m not suggesting it should be looked at that way (as you know, I’m not a big fan of blended averages - the extremes always skew the data in a flawed way).

I’m actually saying injuries should be considered for outlier situations. Im saying when you look individually at bad losses on a resume - who wasn’t available to play the game should be considered. Similarly - sparkling wins should have caveats if key players didn’t play for the losing team. A team that normally doesn’t get blown out very often that suffers 2 blow out losses without their 35 mpg PG? Probably should get a passing thought.

Speaking of Bart's sims being weird.. we've jumped all the way to 26.1% without playing another game.

Illinois beat Rutgers by 35. Are you saying one player would have turned it into a win?

Illinois has had:

Kofi miss 5 games (2 with concussion).

Curbelo miss 14 games with concussion and he’s only now rounding into form. He has only been at 21 of 95 practices and was preseason first team all BT so he’s been sorely missed.

Frazier miss games with a separated shoulder and a knee injury.

Austin Hutcherson go down with season-ending sports hernia.

6 players out against Notre Dame with the flu

9 players got covid.

And now, just when he was coming on strong, RJ Melendez is out with an emergency appendectomy.

Illinois is number one in the country for most games missed by rotation players.
What else could go wrong?

No excuses for one player missing a 35 point blowout.

I think the absence of Kofi should and will be taken into account with Illinois’ seed. I’ve mentioned it on other I don’t see that as being nearly as great of a win for Marquette without him playing.

I also never said we would’ve won either Illinois or Seton Hall with Geo (I said the games would’ve been closer and we would’ve beat UMass). Geo makes a big difference on both sides of the ball even when he doesn’t bring his A game. Anyone who thinks otherwise is drastically overvaluing our bench’s ability to play perimeter defense and handle the ball.
