Double bye and I’m in Indy this year !!
might even go regardless of the seed if the team is showing good momentum going in
I'm trying to decide bc I want to go to B1G but rather save the trip for NCAA if they make it... wonder if booking late flights hotels and tickets is that much more costly or not...

Don’t look now but if we keep up the way we have played these last 7 halves, we have a shot at the title or share of it. Illinois is only 1.5 ahead and they come to us this Wednesday. We hold tiebreakers against everyone else, Purdue , Wisconsin , Michigan State , Ohio State ., Michigan and Iowa. Have to continue to play good to great basketball both offensively (efficiency has skyrocketed) and defensively ( elite especially down the stretch) and get to the line and continue to knock them down at a 75% rate. We shot 89% today on 16-18 and last week against Michigan State we were 81% 21-27.

Pike is going offense defense trying to get Geo a blow and pulling out all the stops. Caleb is playing like the defensive player of the year , his stats are great there, but there is so much that he does that doesn’t show up there. Then we have the Paul transformation. 18 big time points including crucial ones. This is such a fun ride to watch.

Somewhat oddly, as a bubble team we'd much rather be the 7 seed than the 5 or 6 seed. The 5 and 6 seeds play the 11/14 and 12/13 winners, which opens you up to a Q3 loss potentially. The 7 seed would play Northwestern or Penn State, which would likely be Q2.

Getting to 12-8 is still the goal, but 12-8 and then losing to Maryland or Minnesota in the BTT would be rough.

Not calling you out, but we all have to realize that this has less to do with Pike, but the players, this an experienced team. And this is why Pike thought this team was so good: the team did not step up in the beginning of the season. He cannot teach expererienced players how to play(already did that to them), that's a big reason why we lost the early games; he expected them to step up(they didn't). This is what growth is; hope we make it to the NCAA's; but this is a huge life lesson for these kids

I’m talking about BigTen ie Northwestern Minnesota

People keep moving the goal posts. 11-9 is in with 1 B1G tourney win. 12-8 given our schedule, lock. If we are 11-8 going into the PSU game, watch out

That is not how it works sometimes.

Despite the veteran group, it takes a while to gel , decide who will be taking the shots, who is going defend, who is going to earn more playing time , while overcoming injuries and Covid . We got a jolt coming out of Covid with the 4 game win streak that featured over 20 assists per game .

We then had to overcome slow road starts
Second half of Northwestern , the lights went on and the switch got turned up. Paul’s transformation and triple double high school phenom showed up and emerged after 2.5 years and it is now 7 straight halves of high efficiency beautiful offensive basketball , along with incredible defensive effort with Caleb leading the way with his DPOY efforts , and then getting to the foul line and knocking them down at a 75% clip.

Good teams get better as the year goes on and this is what is happening in front of our eyes as the boys are playing up to their potential. Harping on early season buzzer beater losses is wasted energy and any evaluator of this team now would tell you that. If we keep this up, we have a legitimate shot at winning or sharing the BIG 10 title. Isn’t that a scenario you would rather emphasize instead of early season efforts below our potential ? Don’t lament the prize is right in front of us.

Also, if we won more games early perhaps we don't play with as much urgency and intensity over this three game stretch as we have.

what a story it WOULD be if RU did some serious damage the rest of the way, through the big 10 and then the NCAA

it actually makes for a very favorable thing about not giving up and staying the course, working hard, etc...good for the team, good for the coach

Exactly. I have been harping on other threads as the gauntlet was approaching and the board was freaking out , that this group and the group that just left have played to the front of the jersey. If they see a ranked team in front of them you know we will get their best effort and likely a win. They are 3-0 so far into the 8 game gauntlet and ranked teams are ahead of us. I like our chances.

At the level we are playing we should (but won’t) be the favorite in 4 of 6 remaining games taking us to 13-7.
We are favored in 1 of the next 6 (psu). Kenpom has the lines in advance
+5 vs illinois
+13 purdue
+7 michigan
+1 wisconsin
+6 indiana
-4 psu

The PSU game being meaningful scares the crap out of me knowing RU's history with meaningful games against mediocre teams.

I'm not pretending I understand how these computer things work... but, anyone know what our NET would be w/o the Layfette game ever taking place?

There are 2.17 expected wins in this group based on our chances in each game. So we need to overperform by roughly a win.

If we win out, the worst would be second place. We would be in first if Illinois and OSU lose 1 or 2 each. They play each other so that accounts for one. We own the tiebreaker over OSU, so we should root for them to beat Illinois but lose one of their other games. If we tie with Illinois , we split with them, but they probably will have best overall record and win the tie breaker. So we need to see 2 more Illinois loses to have a chance at regular season champs.

Sounds like a co-champ is possible and I think we win the tie-breaker on Illinois because we have better records against high-ranking teams.
