Over 6 years. Hes rarely going after the highest quality guys. On this years seton hall team alone
- Bryce Aiken
- Kadary Richmond
- Ike Obiagu
- Trey Jackson
- Yetna
- Jamir Harris

these guys arent slouches you bury on the bench either.

i get people like pike but youre not required to defend him at every turn. His portal philosophy is antiquated and that is putting it nicely
Seton Hall fans hate Richmond, Harris was part of a package deal. Aiken doesn't fit pikes system but would have taken him and the others are all fine guys to go after

Tks. So basically just stirring up sh*t. Worst part is engaging Kyk, who per usual when RU is riding a high has been quiet as a church mouse.
Seems like it, I wouldn’t have expected Caleb to be thinking about this right now and if he was openly thinking about it I’d suspect the same group would be critical of that. I also think both sites have value but for basketball especially I tend to wait until Richie or Chris weigh in before pressing the panic button.

Right. And I think it was fair for Pikiell to not take anyone he thought was going to be a ballhog with Geo, Harper, and Mulcahy on the roster. Going into next season however we kind of need one or two "selfish" players who are looking to get shots up.
Jones and Hyatt both have that trigger finger, whether the shots will go in is a different story

So a fourth year senior who has played all 4 years is unsure whether he will return for a free 5th year. Isn't that normal? Not sure why this is even a story.
Bingo.

If McConnell came out and said "yes, I'll be back" certain people would slam him for already thinking about next year and not focusing on Wisconsin.

If he said "no, I'll be moving on" then he'd get slammed for that plus I'm sure people would call him a traitor and other nonsense.

Yes it is totally normal, especially in todays environment and for a kid not from NJ like Caleb.

I’m sure Sojo already has his hit piece drafted to blame Pikiell, in the case Caleb does decide to move on lol. This thread was probably a setup for that potential hit piece.

Coach Thompson said at the Court Club meeting that the coaches don't want anyone thinking about returning for a 5th season until after the season ends. They don't want the kids to be focusing on anything except the next game. Thus, why do we have to have this posted at this time? Just let our guys focus on one game at a time. I am sure some read or hear what is on this site. I also think someone just wanted to get clicks.

I expected Caleb back tbh and in any thread we’ve had on this board about next year I don’t remember one person (maybe there was) who wasn’t including or assuming Caleb would be here in every predictive roster.

No denying contemplating leaving every offseason is the new normal. Not sure Caleb playing the best ball of his career with no high end professional basketball outlook would be someone to consider leaving RU if able to stay and get masters like other players have.

A lot of people have connections to the team especially the younger posters. The old guys typically find that hard to believe for some reason. Poster mentioned a different but related question that was touched on at the court club.

Glad I started this thread asking people if they had connections to find out more about Caleb’s thoughts and if people thought Caleb is on the fence about leaving. Lot of good points brought up about potential factors in his decision making that a quite frankly wasnt thinking would hold weight against a decision to return.

Ignoring viable areas of talent acquisition is a truly bad idea.
Rutgers will probably be losing their two top scoring threats .As such the transfer portal better be utilized or next seasons team will have great difficulty scoring 60 points a game. The lack of bench scoring this season doesn't inspire confidence that they can make up for the loss of Baker and Harper.

I feel like Pikiell has looked to the portal in every year. Gettys, Souf, Sa, Yeboah, Kiss, Hyatt, Young, Agee. Also went all in trying to land the Martin twins but missed.

I think he’s just saying he doesn’t want to take guys who are demanding minutes rather than willing to compete for them.

In reality I don’t think any player doesn’t ultimately compete for them either way once in practice so is it seems like a pointless distinction to make that only hurts the program.

I'd be a little surprised if he came back. Assuming Harper is gone, that means the entire class of guys he came in with (Harper and Mathis, plus Myles as a RS) plus Geo who he's been with for four years would be gone. Throw in that New Jersey is not his original home... sometimes it's just time to move on. It's like if you went to a party with your friends and you look around and they've all left, you start thinking about grabbing your jacket.

I've waffled on this but I think I would like it if he did decide to come back. But I'm not expecting it.
In that context (relationships) , I'd think it would depend on his bond with the teammates who'd still be here and whether he sees himself (along with Paul) as someone who wants that leadership role.

It seemed like Caleb was fully prepared to redshirt last season and play a 5th year of college bball. He offered to redshirt fully understanding that his classmates would have moved on by the 5th season. Gut feeling tells me he comes back.

But, it's only resulted in a 15-7 record in the Big East, 6-6 in the league and a bubble team.

Nailed my thoughts exactly. All his homies are gonna be gone next year and he's not from NJ

Flip side is maybe he wants a bigger role and be more of a leader? His role likely stays the same and it will be Paul's team.

I'd lean to think he doesn't come back but who knows

Lets not forget, he should also have his degree. Maybe the NIL makes it worth it, but I can’t say Id want to spend another year in college without have much more to accomplish personally.

That was due to injuries. Not sure Id read that far into it.

I’m not following what the concern is here. It’s a big deal to make a big announcement about returning when the decision is made (see RHJ and Geo videos). Caleb deserves to be honored this year with his buds at senior day just as Geo was honored last year. Why on earth would he announce now that he is definitely coming back for a 5th year. Of course he’s going to say he’s weighing his options when asked. What am I missing here?

Give me a break. There’s no camouflaging the fact that you’re “most active” after losses and during rough stretches.

That’s a fair point. I think we’ve learned Pikiell loves the blue collar type of attitude. I think you’d be surprised about how many of these kids come in thinking they’re the man. Roles, starting, and number of shots matter to most guys, especially transfers who are leaving because they think the grass is greener. Look at Miller Kopp. There are a ton of talented kids that don’t fit what Pikiell is trying to put on the floor.

Literally can say that for 99% of posters on any sports message board. Everyone naturally talks more after losses and bad performances, yourself included.

Complete speculation here, there are times it appears Mulcahy and Caleb walk off the court together, sometimes one has arm around other, so while some of those he entered with may not be on team next year, he may want to be a leader with Paul next season. I think he's got more to his offensive game that he can show next season.

It was a click bait topic or article on a message board. I can guarantee McConnell is not thinking about next year with 7 games to go, Wisconsin coming up and Rutgers battling for a tourney spot.
This is my feeling as well. I don’t think he’s actively thinking about and don’t think he ever has

I think this is similar to a Myles situation. We all would love him back but my gut feeling says he puts his name in the portal to see what is out there. Being a Florida kid, a school like UF, FSU, or Miami could be enticing and it makes sense that he'd like a change of scenery with his recruiting class gone and a degree in hand. The fact that RU is considering a wing in addition to a big man is also a sign to me that they have a feeling as well. The question marks I have are if Jones, Cliff (NBA/G League), Palmquist transfer. Palmquist looks so happy at RU but transferring down could mean 25+ minutes a night. Cliff made incredible strides this offseason and summer classes this year may mean he could graduate in 3 years by coming back but obviously playing with Nigeria last summer and getting feedback in the process could swing his decision to turn pro. Jones we all know is a popular topic. His situation is unique and could see many things happening.

Bear in mind, they’re all behind guys who have been playing together for 3, 4 years and have built in chemistry. The big 5 have been playing upwards of 30-35+ minutes a game. We’re gonna lose 3 starters next year assuming Caleb is gone. That’s a lot of playing time up for grabs next year.

Lol! Me included? You are so full of sh*t as you have no idea when or how I post. Unlike many of you asshats, I fully understand the season is 30 something games, there are highs and lows, and correspondingly you don’t knee jerk after losses (or wins).
