Taking Geo Off the ball

Going back to the Maryland game, Fatts Russell was giving geo fits for a lot of the first half and in the second half of the game I felt like we went more to Paul and Caleb as primary on the ball guys to start the offense and well we saw better offense and less turnovers.

Geo is very good and the pick and roll lob with cliff, but otherwise I don't think his best use is as the PG. I think he's better as an off ball shooter. For most of last nights game our sets felt like a complete mess and idk if that's his fault or the team as a whole. On top of that, how many end of half turnovers is he going to have.

This is not an attempt to knock Geo, I am grateful for him being a key cog in turning the program around, I'm just curious if he is being utilized in the best way on offense.

Anyone agree or disagree?

Am I losing it OP - I’m recalling the opposite. PM was running the point in the first half of the Maryland game committing a ton of turnovers. In the second half - Geo ran things and Paul played off ball and had a great half.

I think it depends who we play. Paul is a better distributor / facilitator once we get into our offense. Geo is a better ball handler so when there’s on ball pressure we’re better off with him being the primary.

Imo Geo, Paul and Caleb are all capable of handling the point, but they each have their limitations, or aren’t always consistent.

How they do depends on who we’re matching up against and how they are playing that particular day/night.

I don’t think there is a right answer for every game which is why we see some ups and downs and also makes it a little tougher for Pikiell (or Knight) to manage the rotations sometimes.

Disagree. We’re much better with Geo as our PG.
Nope… Geo has an aspect in his game which translates into better sharing of the ball. If you haven’t seen it recently I don’t know how to change your perspective on this offense where the ball moves and is shared.

I think he may actually be better as an offball player but we don’t have a good enough guy to run the offense so we are better if Geo is on ball

This 100%. Recall his freshman year when Corey ran the point, he was better off the ball which translated to better shooting percentage especially from 3 (36%) on 147 attempts. Now that being said, Geo is best to be the primary handler today and its reflective in his 2.8:1 assist to turnover ratio. The team really rotates who handles and distributes at different times in the game, but late game clutch time I want him with the rock to make the decision (i.e. Maryland)

He’s been great but that’s cause we’ve been using Geo more as the main ball handler and Paul as a secondary one.
That is the point …Geo playing off guard gives us ( when he is on) the flexibility we lacked. The mere fact of this conversation is some Rutgers followers are constantly beating up on a few particular players . Just a few weeks ago people were adamant that ReIber is not a B1G type player. I guess Reiber and Mulcahy don’t fit a specific approval level or fans are just not trusting in Piekell. I root for all these kids. As I see it minus the PSU game our offense has at the very least had some team unity.

If I were Pike and the team it would be situational. Who brings the ball up matters little in a half court set so I would look at the matchups and I think we are seeing a lot of this. I think we do this on D as well. We mix and match who covers who to give guys a rest.

This team's run and change in play started when we stopped having Paul dribble for 15 seconds up top with his back to the basket while everyone stands around staring.

Geo on ball has lead to better ball and player movement.

Why would we go back to what wasn't working?

Geo isn't a spot up shooter. He even passes down these types of looks. He likes to shoot off the dribble on ball from the top of the key. When does Geo ever create from the wing?

Paul is a good and willing spot up shooter and has been much more effective attacking from the wing off ball reversals or passing from the post

We are at our best when multiple people handle the ball. Paul has been brilliant attacking, scoring and distributing as has Geo. Caleb is mainly focused on D lately but has had his moments on Offense as well. I like when Cliff pops out and gets a touch to help setup plays as well. I have seen multiple plays but we are at our best when the ball moves around. Last year we ran way more iso plays.

Not question turnovers . We were discussing should he play off the ball. All I know is ball movement has improved 100% so whomever I’ll let Piekell decide each game.

Getting some offense and big shots out of Caleb has been a real bonus.

Maryland's Russel is a cheating foul machine. That the refs would not call anything on them in the first half was horrid.

On D he actually pulled the ball-handler's arm up near his face on multiple occasions. He even got a foul called on Caleb by throwing his face into his armpit and lifting his arm higher to make it look like he elbowed him in the head.

On offense, Russel was a carry and travel machine. More often than now.. he travels. It was unbelievable how often he take extra steps and shuffles his pivot foot.

Yeah.. I know this has nothing to do with who our PG should be.. but since we do not have a point guard I felt it okay to say my piece on that player.
