Maybe it’s just my optimism. We have looked awful during stretches in the past years. We have had games where we looked good defensively and others good offensively. We haven’t had everyone hustling or great chemistry yet.

I think a leader emerges, maybe Paul, there’s a player only meeting and the team turns it around and we find our way. Pike also finds the rotations that work.

Don’t know if we will dance, but I think we see the hustle, strong defense, board crashing and team we are used to.

Still early to be optimistic and hope at least the team becomes entertaining to watch and root for.

Cliff's foul trouble and very suspect ref calls overall probably lost us the DePaul game. RHJ is obviously hurting--appears to be a back problem- and Geo injured and out probably cost us the last two games. We still should have enough horses to beat Lafayette and UMass. I agree Pike's questionable player rotations were a problem vs UMass.

I am hoping the same.

One thing about Paul Mulcahy is that you know he will give his all. That is not seen often these days.

There were some good posessions in the UMASS game. I am hoping we will see some good basketball going forward.

I think we will see improvement, but most likely not enough to earn a bid to the big dance. Of course, I hope I am wrong. The B1G is not as strong as last season. An 8th or 9th place (and maybe not even a 7th place) finish in the B1G standings probably won't be good enough to receive an invitation in March. A stellar campaign in league-play is a must to earn a berth.

We will almost definitely be better than most on here think right now.

(1) if you look on Kenpom we are like 350th in luck. Even based on our performances so far we would expect to be 4-2 right now, not 3-3. That’s still bad against this schedule but still.

(2) we are shooting under 25% from 3. That is unlikely to continue. If you adjust that to 30% we would be like 85th in offensive efficiency instead of in the high 100s

Overall I think we look like we will be somewhere in the 70s on Kenpom when the season is over. That will be disappointing to a lot of people but it is nowhere near the 8-26 doomsday scenarios that people are posting here.

If the team gels or Pike figures something out, gets them playing better defense, etc, we could probably play like the 40ish ranked team we were last year. Unfortunately though we are already 2 games below the bubble so even that might not be enough to make the dance at this point.

Hoping we go 1-0 on Tuesday. That’s up next. It’s not crazy to make up 3 bad losses

Let’s revisit these thoughts after the Clemson game tomorrow night.

There will be many posters who will freely share their observations at that time.

The problem is Paul isn’t the captain.

Paul is not a captain, let alone a starter at most places anywhere else in the B1G as a guard....he's a hard worker and rotation player on a winning program or at best a 5th starter that you can hopefully hide defensively. To be a captain, you need ownership of the locker room, based on performance and play on the court.

RU fans need to value actual play, shooting, scoring, rebounding and accountability. You do not go to Paul Mulcahy in crunch time to ask him to stop an opponents best scorer or to get points in crunch time as an offensive player. If the player cannot get his own offense or get stops on defense, how are discussing elevating that type of player to captain??

Paul is the ultimate glue guy, the player that can make plays in certain spots, when an opponent is focused on 2 or 3 other scorers or players. That was his role last season and he is most effective in that role.

Part of RUs ultimate breakdown in play is elevating 5th or 6th options on either end of the court, to 2nd or 3rd options and asking them to make key shots and key plays.....there are front line players who ultimately need to own that aspect of the roster....Mulcahy is not going to be your best player on a B1G roster, unless you plan on finishing last place.....we need front line athletes to fit pieces on the roster, so a player like Mulcahy and McConnell are slotted properly.

Don't worry about it, Clemson is only shooting 64/145 44.1% from 3PT range through 7 games, what could go wrong? PJ Hall 9/19, Dawes 19/39, Nick Honor 15/30, Hunter Tyson 9/24.
