Tells you all you need to know about the stubbornness of our coach, how he has no idea how bad it is right now and going forward, and his blind loyalty to the wrong players.

not surprising is it, although Hyatt was not good tonight either, fouling 2x on 3 pointers, we may lead the country this year
Great example of the different length of leash he gives certain guys over others. Happens every year with Pike.

Hyatt stunk tonight too but agree you cannot keep giving McConnel 25-30 minutes putting up goose eggs in the box score and chucking up air ball after air ball.

Either his back is really not the same or he has the basketball yips.

How did 33 do when Caleb guarded him?

there are 2 sides to a basketball court. Caleb playing is more an indictment to the fact that Hyatt right now is not that good

pike tried. He gave Hyatt the start. He was miserable defensively

people have to stop blaming Pike for playing the wrong people. If anything blame him for the people he brought in right now that aren’t worth playing core minutes.

He could, should, and is being blamed for both.

And quite frankly it doesn’t matter what McConnell does defensively (which is overrated IMO) because he has played himself to one of least efficient offensive players in high major basketball with qualifying min minutes over the course of two calendar years now. The difference between his D and another persons D is smaller than the difference between his terrible O and our other O options. Especially in the context of Pikes defensive systems. That’s the “two sides” of basketball as it relates to McConnell.

This is a concerning passage in the post game speech and a peak into Pikes head and loyalty to guys for the wrong reasons.

“We're young. Jaden Jones is going to be good. We've been playing a lot of guys that haven't had a lot of actual experience. So we really depend a lot on Paul, Geo, Ron and Caleb. Those are our experienced guys. We got to get used to it and they have to be able to play in these kinds of environments and they have to understand that you know down the stretch you have to get stops.”

Sad thing is Hyatt fouled O'Boyle twice on 3 point attempt, 1 1st half 1 2nd half and didn't play much after it and Reiber fouled O'Boyle on a 3pta later in the 2nd half, FT 8-9.

That could be because Hyatt seemed to be shooting the airball tonight better than even Caleb.

Sorry but Caleb is one of the least athletic players in the B1G. He is sloth-like with the ball in his hands. No threat to break someone down off the dribble, cannot even create a little space to get a jumper off, ridiculously slow release and now with his confidence completely gone he aims the ball and short arms his wide open jumpers. He used to have a pretty smooth stroke when left open from deep and was probably one of our best mid range shooters too. He shouldn't see the court at all until he gets his head straight.

Great. Who guards Andre Curbelo? We can’t even defend #33 on Lafayette.

If we are going to be bad I’d rather watch guys that work hard defensively and dive on the floor.

forget X and Os we have a diving on the floor winning 50/50s problem.

That’s fine, but then that person needs to be told to stop shooting on the other aide. What a joke!!!

Caleb offensively is a really limited offensive player. Yes he can’t continue playing if he can’t make a 10 foot shot. We have a large sample of what he can do. I hope he can work through it and figure it out.

If he can’t play this team will trend more Eddie Jordanesque if you are playing all perimeter players that are either poor defenders or unwilling defenders.

Also worth noting last year Caleb was a plus rebounder out of his position. That gets lost on the bench.

Perhaps Pikiell could do some coaching and get the other players to play defense? Jones has been on the roster for a year, Hyatt has been in college for 3.5 years. How long are we supposed to wait?

How is dribbling around and throwing up a bad jumper any less infuriating than getting beat for cuts? Two sides of the same coin.

I get that defense is important but how may B1G games are we going to win scoring 51pts? He's played 127 minutes in 5 games and has a total of 14 pts. 5-30 from the floor.

It is more of an indictment on Pikells recruiting ability in the fact that we don’t have anyone on the bench or anyone who can start

We will never win a game with last nights offensive efficiency. Your team is completely naked when you shoot like we did. You can see every flaw.

Maybe it isn’t possible. It never clicked with Rosario on 2 programs.

Our two major sports have serious offensive issues and it starts with the coaches.

Both should go pick the brain of the men’s lax coach.

damn I would take a Rosario on this team, even with his flaws, at least we would have someone who could score and Inman too and Herve too

its funny we are coming off a ncaa tourney appearance and win but we have arguably less on our team than we had in 3 of our previous 4 coaches

Basketball is a team game on offense and defense. Its the responsibility of the coaching staff to recruit players that can be successful in a power conference. The recruiting mixture must include size, quickness ,shooting ability and ability to perform in pressure situations. The biggest weakness on this team is the lack of players that can create and make shots off the dribble like a Cory Sanders. There is a over abundance of two guards and small forwards who are poor shooters. There is a total absence of a traditional point guard and power forward. The team weaknesses are really shown against a zone defense.
