Tired of the loyalty to Geo

I get that he’s important to the program and Pile is a loyal guy, but Geo sucked today and should’ve sat a lot more than he did. And we should’ve gotten the ball down low to Harper or Cliff on the final possession of regulation. Geo seems like he only hits clutch shots, but not anything of value during the other parts of the game. Also, his defense tonight was atrocious. Ok rant over. On to the next one. Hyatt is gonna be good for us.

Who are you suggesting that should play over him? I mean you're not wrong but we don't have another "small guard" that fits the same mold as him.

Good question. I’d personally let Jones get more run. Also wanted to see Hyatt more at the end.
Put McConnell back at the 1 and reduce Geos minutes there and Jones more minutes at the 2 and reduce minutes there.

The best four is pretty clear imo it’s 2-5 Jones Ron Hyatt Cliff.

You don’t sit players because they “suck today”.

With 100 games of data on average Geo makes just over 1 more shot than he made tonight. This is who Geo is. He doesn’t do much but at the end of game with a bad shooting team he gets the last shot and a chance to erase everyone’s memory of his performance for the first 38 minutes. Same story every year. Sometimes the ending changes

It's a bad job by Pikiell that there is not another point guard option on the roster. McConnell and Mulcahy aren't it.
He only recruited wings out of high school for a while for some reason. Losing Alvarado was big at the time

Sure, but if you’re going to sit him use the 100 games of data to justify it, not the 10 minutes.

It’s probably two years ago or so to the date I opened this one up OP, good luck trying to have a rational conversation about Geo Baker.

As for the preferential treatment he gets, that didn’t sit well with some of the guys last year.
Well I will not defend Geo’s first half , which was a disappearing Act, but his second half was good on both ends with a number of steals on denials. They was no preferential treatment , but rather he played out of necessity and we needed him to score in the second half and he did, but he needed to score more.
Let’s be real tonight , Paul was terrible and Caleb was not much better. The number of missed close shots was mind boggling. Paul did a terrible job getting the ball into Ron and Cliff, held the damn ball too long , without crisp passes , and did not dish out for wide open 3 men when he struggled in the paint. His defense was really lousy as well. One of his worst games. Hopefully we do not see another one like that all year.
Geo cannot be so passive this year if we have big aspirations. He could have gotten 10 easy points in the first half but he didn’t try. That cannot happen.
The amount of missed bunnies or 5-8 foot shots by everyone was mind boggling. 27-72 will not cut it. Not to mention at least 4 of our threes were in and out and Ron finally made one and they called Cliff for that ******** offensive screen foul and disallowed it.
Other things to comment but will do so in another thread.

I did not see that at all. He was getting beat routinely.
Comparing him to last year. Paul is better than last year defensively. Not saying he’s a good defender though. Just that he’s much better than he was.

What game did you watch. That was Paul’s worst game since he has been here, and by a lot. Did almost nothing right , except 1-2 times he posted the smaller guard and actually made the basket. Otherwise , he was horrendous in any basketball measurement.

I just don’t see how any coach could think a lineup of Geo Paul McConnell would end up doing well offensively. Add Harper, who McConnell usually just crowds if he’s off ball and maybe we have enough film from last year to know those four are a mess together.

Paul played alright tonight. He just couldn’t get any of his shots to fall. But his defense and lateral quickness is much improved from last year.
Paul was atrocious tonight. He and McConnell should both lose minutes before Geo. Nobody outside of Ron and Cliff was that great tonight though (Hyatt played pretty well too)

Pike preferential treatment you complained about was not to Geo , it was to Paul and Caleb . Paul should have been on the bench a lot more and Hyatt needed to stay in the game. Pike taking him out was a really bad move. Hyatt will be good on both ends for us and he rebounds . He and Ron with Cliff should be a frontline you play a lot with Geo , Paul and Caleb and Jaden rotating at the guard spots. Jaden’s defense was not great and he was taken out because of it a few times tonight as well as forcing some shots and missing other easy shots. He will get better and I think his shooting will be good as we go.

Tired of people who freak out over one game, especially when it’s the first game of the season (and a win)!

Geo is what he is. He’s not a superstar, but he is a team leader and hits clutch shots.

We don’t win tonight without his 12 points after halftime, and his clutch jumper with 50 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.
But we would have won in regulation if he showed up in the first half.

McConnell should not be starting
I don’t know who else should. Everyone who came off the bench was very shaky defensively. I am not in love with the starting 5 who were the 5 that finished the game. However defensively it was probably our best unit.

the problem for me is that 3 of our starting 5 did not bring it at all today...experienced players and Geo tops on that list. Mindset not there, not a good example to the bench players.

Paul missed some point blank shots. I hesitate saying he didn’t bring it. Paul has his warts. I have been critical. We can’t say Paul needs to do more offensively and then kill him when he dies more and good shots don’t go down.

Agreed. I’m also not panicking yet, having a sluggish start for the season opener happens, and I think the fact that there’s a lot of guys that Pike is trying to figure out how to rotate is why the non conference schedule looks the way it does.

After watching maybe five minutes of this game my only thought was “Just get out of here with a win,” and they did that at least.

Am I happy with what I saw today? Hell no. But I’m also not climbing up onto the ledge after one game. There’s some pretty clear things that Pike needs to get these guys to clean up.

The final play, or lack there of, in regulation is concerning. Sure Baker has been clutch. But to run 30 seconds with zero passes and zero movement and settle for the set back 3 is just not good basketball. Especially playing an inferior opponent. Has to be some motion and attack to the paint and rim like we did in OT

Agree totally. If half of Paul's shots had gone down, most people would have said he played a good game. It wasn't one of his better games, but when you force 22 turnovers by the opponent, he must have made some good plays........

Best of Luck,

If half of the team’s shots had gone down we would have won by 20.

He had a bad game in all facets. I’d say most of the team did. It happens, we don’t need to make excuses for it. He works hard and I’m sure he’ll have much better games.

I will get roasted for asking it , but is geo really that clutch ? He seems to miss more of these big shots than he makes.
The last few times in these end of game iso spots he has failed: minnesota , houston , and last night. He did have a big layup against Clemson off a bounce

Paul had two big plays to start the OT, set up one basket with a great dump down low on a fake shot, and also had a heady basket in same spot off a fake pass. Both were very heady plays where he kept his cool in traffic.

I would have liked to have seen Harp with the ball in his hands at the end of the game down low.
Harper had a sound rebounding game but for all the ragging on Geo, he wasn’t shooting lights out either and looked like he was winded at end of game.
