It would be a change, but it doesn't change everything. I like PM. A lot. But I'm essentially agreeing with the OP's thoughts.

PM has a huge roll and he will contribute greatly.
Experienced and game tested.
That said he is not breaking a press, and not beating opponents best ball on ball defender to the hoop.
Geo will bring the ball up the court, and we’ll learn quickly about Miller
He does some good things in the half court and against zones. Very valuable things.

Only one guy here saw an imaginary PM beating guys 1 on 1 to get to the hoop.

Paul is a very intelligent and instinctive player. I bet he is like a sponge with what Pike is coaching him to do this year. He has unbelievable vision and passing abilities. I think he has a huge improvement this his junior year and I see his increased confidence in shooting being a big asset

WHEN has he been assigned to do that? we always had guys out there to do that 1 on 1 crap... why would we ask PM to do that? Why do you want that to be the responsibility of the PG in half-court sets?

In any case.. I hope we get to see how he does directing the offense and then we can discuss how important it is to be able to blow by guards.

Here's what I want to see.. PM with ball top of key.. Geo and Harper make moves from baseline toward the arc.. maybe with screen help.. PM dishes and then, say, RH takes the ball and if open shoots the three or if the defender is still coming fast then RH blows by him creating openings for big men whose man left him to go stop penetration.

That's what I want to see.. TEAM offense.

other than Iowa, nobody runs a motion offense so these days. Everything is on ball screens.

he struggles with on ball pressure. we really don’t have a really good ball handler unless Miller is that guy
He’s a bigger guard. Taller guys struggle when smaller quicker guys pressure the ball. However, he is good enough to pass over those shorter guards and also post them up. He’s careful with the ball which is key. If teams pressure him with a smaller guard look for someone else to help him handle the ball but he will get his touches on most possessions even if he doesn’t bring it up the court.

Offense becomes stagnant when he brings the ball up court. He’s just too slow IMO
What changes with PM is we go real slowly it’s tough to watch.

Paul did a great job last year becoming a reliable corner three guy when open. If he can marry playing within his normal a upporting role and hit open 3s he will be helpful. Now, he probably won’t hit the 3 at the same clip, but somewhere where he was last head would be fine.

Pick, pick, pick. Kid’s game is a little different but he’s a helluva player, makes a valuable contribution. Glad we have him.

Trust Pike to put PM in a role that suits him and helps the team. We will see what that is. I agree he needs to look for his own shot more when he drives.
