There is definitely a distinction to be drawn between "perceived recruiting ability", which is to say as measured by recruiting agencies prior to players ever seeing the floor in college, and "actual recruiting ability", which is to say how well do the players you bring in perform through their careers.
For instance, Myles Johnson was a bigger actual recruiting success than Mamadou Doucoure, while Doucoure was a better perceived recruit that year. Doucoure contributed more to our perceived recruiting as compared to other schools in 2017, but Johnson contributed more on the court.
