As Paul becomes and upper classman how he goes about his business and what he does on the court becomes even more valuable.

Hopefully newcomers will look up to him. Having a guy on the court whose primary focus is looking for others has to rub off on others if he is respected (I have no reason to believe he would not be).

If we had that we would have the most turnovers in the league with the least shot attempts

Definitely the lowest shot attempts, though I'm not sure where you're getting the highest turnovers from. Mulcahy had just 2.4 turnovers per 40 minutes played.

If every player averaged that, it would be 12.0 team turnovers per game.... vs. the 11.5 we averaged this year.

If every player on the team averaged his 4.2 assists per 40, the team would average 21 assists per game which would be the best in the country.

Ohhh... I think ilt's cuz you're using that bizarro TOV% stat, which somehow ignores the concept of assists just like Usage % does. The formula is: (TOV ÷ (FGA + (0.44 x FTA) + TOV)) x 100%.... it's a measure of how many of the possessions that "end" with the ball in your hands resulted in a turnover, ignoring the possessions that "end" with someone else making a bucket off of your assist.

You bring your TOV% down by hucking up shots. For example, Young committed 5.8 turnovers for every 100 team plays, while Mulcahy committed 3.5.... but Mulcahy had a higher TOV% because he took fewer shots.

Weird and not-very-useful stat.

Great interview. Paul is the whole package — a loyal teammate, intense competitor, humble, high character guy who loves RU, loves NJ and is already giving back to the community. Proud to have him representing us, as he makes winners of us all, both on and off the court.

I certainly enjoyed this podcast. Paul is all about team and loves New Jersey and representing his home state so very much. I am so much looking forward to this coming season.

Was just thinking about TOV% a little more and how bad it is as a metric.

Consider the lines from two imaginary players in a single game:

Player 1:
25 min, 1/1 FG, 0/0 2P, 1/1 3P, 2/2 FT, 5 RB, 6 AST, 2 TOV, 3 STL, 1 BLK, 1 PF, 5 points
Player 2:
25 min, 1/9 FG, 1/5 2P, 0/4 3P, 1/6 FT, 1 RB, 0 AST, 2 TOV, 0 STL, 0 BLK, 4 PF, 3 points

Player 1 is a facilitating player who scored 5 points on 1 shot and 1 trip to the line and set up his teammates 6 times for buckets (resulting in anywhere from 12-18 more points for the team). He also grabbed 5 boards and had a strong defensive game.

Player 2 is a shooter having a bad night, who didn't set up any teammates for points, grabbed 1 board, and struggled on defense.

Looking at those two scenarios, both players turned it over the same number of times in the same number of minutes, but Player 1 had a far better line overall.

TOV%:
Player 1: 51.5%
Player 2: 14.7%

Player 2's Usage% would also be 3.5x higher.... even though Player 1 contributed a lot more to the team for that game.

Issa had a microscopic turnover %.

Not taking shots makes your TOV% go up, not down.

Thiam's career TOV% was 13.2 (and 13.8 his final season here).... which is higher than Harper (7.7), Mathis (10.6), McConnell (10.3), and Omoruyi (12.1) this past season. Baker had 14.3 this year by comparison.

Connor McCaffery (Iowa) led the Big Ten in Ast/TOV ratio this year, with 3.6 assists/1.0 turnovers in 22.8 minutes.... and he had a TOV% of 20.6%

Mike Smith (Michigan) led the Big Ten in assists this year, averaging 5.3 assists and 2.1 turnovers in 31.6 min..... and he had a TOV% of 19.8%

Maybe we should ban the use of usage and tov% when making an argument. Let’s plaease add individual defensive rating to the list also

Some of the advanced metrics are pretty good.... but some have really narrow uses with really broad-sounding names (like usage rate and turnover rate).

In several games Pike had to sit him because he couldn’t defend his guy or anyone they switched him to. He doesn’t score enough to justify his weak D. Myles at least played good D. PM may be a team leader, but he’s questionable as a legit starter.

That's some.. er.. opinion.. if PM couldn't defend he wouldn't be playing.. PERIOD... not just "had to sit him". If you watch PM he plays a help D.. too much at times.. loses his guy.. that's an effort error... the kind of effort that leads to his steals.. and, yes, to easy baskets for the man he covers at times.

I think we’ll see a stronger, physically developed Paul this year.

Paul's lack of speed and quickness really hurts us at times. I think he'd be ok defensively if we played zone but we are a man to man team.

IMO.. someone is going to have to help Cliff (this year while he is learning to be "the man") by harassing any offensively skilled big man that Cliff is on. I think PM will be trying to harras big men in the box to help keep Cliff out of foul trouble... as Green-fig said, he's a willing defender and if anyone will make an effort to play help-D it will be him. Hope to see others do the same... close down those passing lanes.. protect Cliff.

There were certain match ups that really exposed his defensive weaknesses last year. In other games it was a non-factor.

The same could be said for RHJ but in his case, it felt like it was more of a mental issue allowing his shooting slump to carry over on defense.
