The initial late March through April entrees to the portal oversaturated the market and a good amount of kids really overplayed their hands.....
A lot took time and visits or virtual visits when campus wasn't open. It really wasn't ideal to try and get a commitment from targets who didn't have a reasonably short distance from home to campus. The names most mentioned were kids who RU either recruited out of HS and visited RU before or were able to get to RU campus and see it on their own, since campuses were essentially closed.
With Agee, he had to be recruited virtually but I think some schools are unable to really keep up with transfer portal kids, once 2022 recruiting returned and things went back to a normal cycle. There are a handful of transfer big names still there but impossible to know where these kids would visit, unless they're active on social media promoting their schedule.
I know there's a large population that only values who RU is recruiting against for kids as more important than winning actual games. I don't like the notion of "trust the staff" either.
The most common sense item when you see someone on tape, does it look like they can play, fit into your system or offer something that your current roster has or not?? If you watch Agee on tape, it's clear that he's better than Doucoure, Reiber or other PFs RU has had in recent years. He is also better away from the basket than everyone at RU (including Eugene) as a PF.....Eugene's game eventually caught up after 4 college years, with his 5th year of play at Oregon this past year, but Agee has more range than Eugene's 3 years here at RU. Can he play good enough defense to be serviceable, is the question, but my guess is he would not be any worse on defense than Doucoure or Reiber has shown so far.
I view Agee as a buffer to offer Reiber some more time BUT I still believe Reiber is still going to be the more likely piece as the true backup 5. I see Agee as a 4 and 5 and it would not shock me to see Reiber and Agee on the floor together, in some spots, to spread out the fouls and keep Agee available to play.
We can also play Hyatt at the 4 with Cliff or Agee, with Harper at the 3, to keep him out or away from fouls. This signing is about making Hyatt and Harper more effective than the actual limits of Agee just being a 5.
