I thought it might be fun to look at next year's group without Geo, Duke, or transfers. This is my take:

Starters:
1 - Mulcahy
2 - McConnell
3 - Mag
4 - Harper
5 - Omoruyi

Bench:
6 - Matthis
7 - Jones
8 - Palmquist
9 - Reiber
10 - Miller

Obviously there are a lot of unknowns regarding the development of all of the players, but I think Mag will be a valuable contributor, and I'm expecting Cliff to show a lot of improvement. The team is still in need of offense, but I think it can be a mid-level B10 team with a chance to make a post season tourney. The odds are good to make the NCAAs if Geo returns, imo. I'm not expecting much from any incoming transfers other than hoping for a decent back-up to Cliff.

If that's what we're working with...

1 - Mulcahy, Miller
2 - Jones, Mathis
3 - McConnell, Mag, Palmquivst
4 - Harper, Reiber
5 - Omoruyi

If Mathis stays, he probably starts over Jones actually.

Slowest starting lineup in the history of college basketball.
Slowest starting lineup in the history of college basketball.
With the likely loss of Baker,Young and Johnson there would be 30 less points per game on a team that struggled to score 60 points. The transfer portal must be used to bring in scoring threats or the team could easily fall to the bottom tier of B1G teams.Just counting on the current players and incoming recruits won't get the job done in a power conference.

some of the freshmen will still be relegated to bench warmers as we tap the portal for talent

how can we even have a discussion if we have no idea who is coming back and who we are getting
And we probably won't know for a long time either. Going to be really tough for these coaching staffs. And trying to do this when there are still so many restrictions on in person recruiting, evaluations, visits, etc.

its an awful situation that the NCAA forced into the coaches lap probably with little input. Virtually every program is going through this right now...imagine whats happening at schools with no coaches like Indiana, Oklahoma and soon to be Texas. Wait until the players competing in the NCAA currently start entering the portal as well. Then you have all the smaller schools who have big time talent will likely lose those players to bigger programs. Its a shitshow with no rules and the players have all the power

I said this in the other thread but it echos bacs talking about the players having all the power and the coaches having to re recruit them and their families all over again and kiss there butts .

The portal , at least this year is turning college into the nba because now the players have the power over the coaches like the nba . Weather good or bad this is the way it is now. If you don’t like the way you are being used , go in the portal. If you aren’t getting along with someone on the team , go in the portal . If the coach isn’t using you exactly the way you think you should be used , go in the portal . If the coach isn’t kissing you butt in the media or during the season, go in the portal .
Not saying this is good or bad , but this is like the nba where players pick and choose and have all the power . And don’t for one second think that aau/ handler influences stop once you are in college . All these kids have people in their ear saying the grass is greener and they are being misused , etc.

again, I’m not faulting the kids but this is the culture now and the way kids are wired

The elite schools will simply have a bigger pool to cherry pick from and reload the talent advantage they already have.

Similar to the nba where all the good players migrate toward the same few teams . I can see this happening in college soon too. Two or three players teaming up to go somewhere

Mag seems like a better version of what Mathis could be. Strong athletic defensive stopper who can attack the basket and finish around the rim. Hopefully Mag can hit the 3 at a solid clip. His body is bigtime level. Looking to see him be in the mix next year

Priority transfers for the team are an experienced stretch 4 to pair with Reiber, to practice and game plan Off/Def 40 minutes with 1-3 and stretch 4/5 lineup, which we couldn't use this season, and 5 to pair with Cliff with Myles probably leaving. No more 4 guard/wing lineups, no more RHJ at 4, he's not even a combo 3/4 like Yeboah was. Ron Harper Jr is a good mismatch and rebounder from the 2/3 position. In 2 games, Reiber got extended 3-5 minute stretches as a stretch 4 along side Cliff/Myles/Duke, Reiber was a net positive on the floor.

vs FDU(12:37) +13, won by 21, stretch 4, Cliff/Myles
vs Purdue(16:27) +14, won by 5, stretch 4, Myles/Doucoure

After Cliff hurt and Pike lost faith in Doucoure
vs Iowa(9:49) +3, lost by 2, backup 5
@ MSU(9:14) -2, lost by 23, backup 5
He is more effective on 4s paired with a 5, not on 5s

Then it would open up a good competition for 1-3, Paul, Jalen, Montez, Jaden, Caleb, RHJ, Palmquist. Mawot Mag has the potential to become a combo 3/4 like Yeboah. Hopefully we can land a Tre Mitchell or if a player like Kai Jones become available from Texas, as a stretch 4, and land a player like Qudus Wahab, both Cliff and Jalen Miller follow him. That's just my 2 cents, if all seniors up and leave, JY, Geo, Myles and Doucoure. I think that would be a 20+'win team.

Faster this this years lineup even with JY starting. Cliff is fast. Mag is fast. The other 3 started on and off all year. If we just want speed to start then replace Caleb with Tez. But I do think we want a true and quicker PG out there.
