The main thing I noticed was that Pike seemed to coddle JY no matter what he did. If I was on the team, JY might have rubbed me the wrong way with his carelessness on offense.

I agree.

I really enjoyed the piece describing JY’s background including his father‘s administrative role in the UH bball program.

To me - after watching - it reinforced for me the maturity level he displayed both on and off the court. He had been around the business of the game all his life.

When you get to this level, everyone was the man in HS. Now you have to earn everything you get including PT. JY frustrated me at times but most times I was screaming to get him back in the game. I think Steve played his rotation absolutely correct. My only grip is that sometimes if a player was hot he would rest them and they would come back cooled down. I am a big believer if a player is hot run him till he is not.

Young got benched. We had other players who never got benched when their effort was bad. Especially a few core players. Jacob Young was not coddled relative to others.

quite honestly he deserved preferential treatment based on his effort on the court.

agree, i certainly do not think Young got preferential treatment at all so its rather odd to suggest he was the issue.

When a so-called fan posts this crap, imagine recruits reading this. Kindly move this **** to the Penn State or Maryland board.

This. JY coddled? Had one of the shortest leashes! You never see the best player on a team treated the way he was treated.

But he was our best player bar none and I ‘m not the only one who felt that way. Isn’t that right coach Pike?🪓🪓🪓🪓

I actually agree with you. I dunno what games the OP was watching (maybe the PSU ones) but in no way was Young coddled by Pikiell lol.

Jacob Young carried this team through the season and into the tournament. He has never received the appreciation he deserved for that.
Not true .The media and many fans understood the Young importance to team success particularly defeating Minnesota in the last game of the season.

JY was very talented. However he didnt carry us the whole season. let's not get carried away. Very talented, defensively great, bone headed on offense with potential to have big impact, play more good games than bad down the stretch, won us the minnesota game, kept us in the houston game.... take the good with the bad.

However, people do not say "take the good with the bad" about a player that "carries" a team. Also we should not have too take the good with the bad with our best player. No one says "take the good with the bad" about guys like Ayo. Cockburn, Garza, jackson-Davis, Trice, williams, levers, etc.... all the good players in our league.

He got benched and routinely the ball was taken out of his hands at the end of games when he 100% deserved to control the offense in the last 2 minutes of play.

100%? like when he threw the ball away against Houston? Or every game before half?

Did Baker throw away any balls against Houston ? JY if he were not as important to our success this year why are so many wringing their hands over his entering the portal. Now that is funny.

In half those instances, the ball would've been taken out of his hands by the other team. He was a consistently inconsistent turnover machine as many times as he was a spark to the offense. I can understand Pikes reluctance.

Yes, because having Geo and Harper shoot contested 3s from five feet behind the line with no time on the clock (you know, 50% of Pike's offense for the whole season) weren't turnovers. *rolls eyes*

I’m going to come right out and say it. This wasn’t a very likable team. And it has nothing to do with the NIL tweets. Too many times throughout the season there was bad body language, moping, etc. As a HS coach it reminded me of a moody, immature high school team and why I left coaching.

JY was NOT one of the culpable ones in my opinion. Kid exuded energy and positivity night in and night out. And I was hard on him at times during the 19-20 season. But he won me over this year. Mulcahy also was not one of the malcontents. He needs work, especially on D, but give me a team full of JYs and PMs from an attitude standpoint any day.

I’m not going to point out the players who I think displayed the worst of it. But I’ll say only one of them are expected to return next year. The rest will be gone and I think it will be a net positive.

Who cares if they were likable ?? Really, what are you 11 with posters on your bedroom wall. This team broke the drought, and won a tournament game. One bounce the other way and they’re still playing . It was a season for the ages ! I “liked” it very much and so should every rutgers fan . You know what isn’t likable , losing !

Pike needs to have Jon Gordon speak with the team next season.

I agree with you 110%. I also coached HS athletics, and I think maybe we view it from a slightly different viewpoint. Nothing pissed me off more than a talented kid with a bad attitude.
