Can anyone explain why women are overall better free throw shooters. Even the women's bigs shoot very well.
smaller ball is one reason.. shorter players means more arc on the FT shots.. softer touches on the rim.
you really cannot compare the two. that second bit explains why it is harder for big men.. and as an engineer someone needs to explain it to Myles...
when a shorter person shoots at the 10 foot rim.. that ball must get up over 10 foot as it nears the rim. It could, and should, lose some speed as it rises up. gravity doing its thing.
Theorhetically a ball releasted at floor level would have just enough momentum to get up over teh front of the rim and would be the softest shot you could imagine.
Whereas Myles.. what's his natural release point for the ball on a FT? is it already 9 feet when it leaves his fingertips? It has only to rise 1 foot to clear teh front of the rim... but he has the distance from the front of the rim to the FT line to cover and must propel the ball forward... a flat/fast shot like that is terrible. And if he put the same arc on it like a small player might.. then the ball might get as high as 14-15 feet before coming down toward the rim..
BOTTOM LINE.. it really is tougher for big men. I think Myles can go to a 1-hand shot... if he turned sideways and used 1 arm.. the ball would be released closer to rim and he could put more of a normal arc on it.. and with big hands and a single point of release, it should be accurate.
