Wrestling MATCH THREAD: Rutgers 🤼‍♂️ vs. Ohio State

[Lex Knapp]

Rutgers wrestling is back in action today, taking on the No. 15 Ohio State Buckeyes on the road. This is a dual that should have fans very excited. The match provides both huge individual and team opportunities, that would provide a great bounce back after a loss to Michigan two weeks ago.

Fans can watch the dual on BTN+, which will begin at noon. Stay tuned for live updates as things get underway in about fifteen minutes.

[Lex Knapp]

Here is what I am looking for in today's match:

- Can Nic Aguilar bounce back after a devestating loss in week one?
- Will Rob Kanniard come ready to wrestle from the opening whistle?
- Is John Poznanski a legitimate podium contender as a true freshman?
- Who with a swing bout can step up for this team?

What are you all looking for from the team, or individuals, in this match?

[LetsGoRUwrestling]

Obviously Aguilar needs to get us a good start out of the gate. Can't be losing to a kid you dominated last season 14-1 no matter how much better he got. Also hoping VanBrill can hold Sasso to a decision and somehow Colluci shows how much better hes gotten and picks off Orndoff

[Lex Knapp]

First match is underway, as Nic Aguilar and Malik Heinselman start things off at 125-lbs

[Lex Knapp]

Heinselman takes Aguilar down off of a re-attack, to score the first points of the bout

[Lex Knapp]

Aguilar escapes in 20 seconds to make it 2-1

[Lex Knapp]

Aguilar with head-in-the-hole go-behind for his second take down of the match, making the score 4-1

[koleszar]

Aguilar still can't finish a shot. Kids got no strength.

[Lex Knapp]

Aguilar able to get an escape, gets to a Heinselman's legs, but is unable to finish before the end of the period.

Aguilar is down 4-3, starting the second period on defense

[koleszar]

He's regressed, not looking good at all. And gives up the 2 with no time.

[Lex Knapp]

Heinselman gets a takedown right at the buzzer of the second period, extending his lead to three.

Looks like the lone official of the match is taking a second look at it. How do Big Ten college duals not have two refs?

Call is confirmed, 6 - 3 Heinselman. Aguilar on top to start the third period

[MS-RU]

How does Aguilar still have no idea how to score points.

[Lex Knapp]

Heinselman out right away, making it 7 - 3

[Lex Knapp]

Heinselman goes up 9 - 3 with another takedown, as RT surpasses the 1:00 mark

[Lex Knapp]

Heinselman cuts Aguilar to make it 9 - 5, as he will look for the major decision

[koleszar]

Time to look for a new 125 lber.. Goes from majoring a kid to losing 10-4. Unreal, transfer or recruit anything different than Aguilar next year.

[MS-RU]

Im sorry, but he stinks. We need another option at 125.

There goes our shot at winning this dual as well. We need a very low percentage upset to happen to even have a prayer.

[Lex Knapp]

Aguilar manages to avoid giving up the major decision, but still loses 10 - 4. Huge swing bout for Ohio State

[Lex Knapp]

Sammy Alvarez making his 2021 debut against Jordan Decatur at 133-lbs

[ScottRU93]

Look like we really can to wrestle

[Lex Knapp]

Decatur strikes first with a takedown on the edge. Personally, thought it was awarded a little early

[Lex Knapp]

Alvarez quickly reverses Decatur to tie the score at two

[ScottRU93]

Really need Nick back at 125 to make this team competitive

[Lex Knapp]

Alvarez will ride out the rest of the first period to keep the score tied.

Alvarez starts the second period on bottom, score is 2-2

[Lex Knapp]

Really need Nick back at 125 to make this team competitive

I wouldn't hold your breath

[koleszar]

Alvarez is like Gumby never seen a takedown to back points like that ever. He looks good for 1st match back.

[Lex Knapp]

Alvarez escapes, taking a one point lead. Decatur gets back in on Alvaez's legs right away, but Alvarez scrambles to put Decatur in a danger position. Alvarez gets a takedown and four back points, as Decatur hangs onto the leg. Action is stopped for potentially dangerous.

Alvarez leads 9 - 2

[PessimisticallyHopefulPragmatist]

I wouldn't hold your breath

And that's just one weight class.

[Lex Knapp]

Alvarez rides out Decatur, and now has over a minute of RT.

Decatur chooses to start the third period neutral. Alvarez still leads 9 - 2

[Lex Knapp]

Sammy "Please Shoot on Me so I can Score on You" Alvarez

[Lex Knapp]

Alvarez gets to a high-C and scores from a crackdown position, making the score 11 - 2

[Lex Knapp]

Alvarez hit with an illegal hold for leaving his feet on a mat return. He gets a quick set of two back on the restart. Alvarez wins 14 - 3, giving Rutgers a much needed bonus point win.

Rutgers lead 4 - 3, as Sebastian Rivera takes on Dylan D'Emillio

[MS-RU]

Atleast Sammy looked good. Great season debut.

[Lex Knapp]

Rivera with a takedown on the edge to take an early 2-0 lead

[Lex Knapp]

Rivera lets D'Emillio up, and manages to score off of a D'Emillio takedown attempt.

4 - 1 Rivera halfway through the first period

[Lex Knapp]

Rivera never hits his knees on top. Sounds simple, but it makes a world of difference while being underneath him.

[Lex Knapp]

Rivera keeps D'Emillio down for the rest of the period. He maintains a 4-1 lead, with just under a 1:30 of RT accumulated.

Rutgers needs at least a major from Rivera.

D'Emillio chooses to start the second period on bottom

[Lex Knapp]

Rivera cuts D'Emillio, and immediately scores off of a quick D'Emillio takedown attempt. Rivera up 6-2

[Lex Knapp]

Rivera keeps D'Emillio down, locking up an RT point with over 3:00 of RT

Rivera starting the third period on defense, leading 6 - 2, with an RT point coming

[Lex Knapp]

SeaBass up and out off the whistle, 7-2 Rivera
