Why Didn't Mathis Shoot?

I don't understand why Mathis, who is an aggressive offensive player, didn't shoot the ball after Baker tapped the ball to him. He had a short jump shot and Johnson under the basket for a rebound and possible put back. There were so many 'WHAT IFS' in this game that Rutgers should have won!

Murry took an aggressive step toward Tez and was in excellent position to defend his shot.
The move opened up Myles who should have had an easy catch and shoot since Garza over committed as well, Myles need only to handle the ball.
Excellent read by Tez IMO

Because he catches the ball off balance with a defender running at him. He made the right play, Johnson just didn't catch it cleanly

Geo didn't tap it to Mathis....it flew over toward him as a result of the foul by Bohannon on Geo's wrist/hand while he was about to launch for his shot. While I thought Mathis would take the shot once he got the ball, in the split second that he tossed it forward to Myles I thought to myself that it was a great look by him for an easy dunk or lay in by Myles.

In a peefect scenerio the center catches cleanly, hits the layup and we win the game with 5 seconds left...in the nightmare scenerio, Iowa has 5 seconds to get the ball to Bohannon or Garza for a winning shot and our hearts are crushed

The one thing I would like to see is MJ instead of kicking out on rebound....you are 3 4 or 5ft away from basket aggressively put it back up and attack the basket. We need to get opposition bugs in foul trouble

First rewatch the play. Geo is fouled and stripped and no call and ball comes to Tez, who initially was open for a split second by then Myles was free for the layup. Myles had an awesome game but if he doesn’t fumble the pass, he lays it in and we take the lead. Regarding TEZ as usual he gets us off to a good start in a big game. Some questioned why he didn’t shoot more , but Tez is unselfish and when he sees an open guy he delivers a pass. He had 5 assists yesterday and could have had almost 10. 3 times he was in the lane and kicked it to Ron for wide open 3’s and Ron uncharacteristically missed them and of course the fish to Myles. I do wish however he was a little more unselfish and their seemed to be a little too much deferral to Ron yesterday and not sure if it was the ankle but Ron just was off yesterday. He had 13, missed 3 foul shots and at least 3 wide open threes , an easy mid range or two. He easily could have scored 25 without really trying and we win easily. We are talented enough that we should go to the hot hand whether that is Geo, Jacob, Tez or Myles not just Ron. Might have made a huge difference yesterday.

The odd thing about Mathis turning down some open 3's is bc he has been shooting so well the last couple games from 3. Typically, turning down those looks is more what a player does when they are slumping from deep

Last year Baker was the player that made the winning shots with his step back jumper..In this game the ball was stripped from Baker and that caused a quick decision by Mathis to pass the ball to Johnson for a dunk. Two bad things happened with Baker not getting the foul call and Johnson fumbling the pass from Mathis. In last play scenarios sometimes you win and other times the opposing team wins which just infers that its better to have the game won prior to last possession scenarios.Rutgers had many opportunities to win the game by making foul shots and or shots around the basket. It was a heart breaking loss that the team must quickly forget with games against Michigan State and Ohio State occurring next week.League rankings change quickly with a loss or a win. .

I did rewatch that play three more times. Baker hits the ball to Mathis with his right hand ( remember they were on opposite sides of the key). Mathis was open and had a shot. I don't disagree with his pass to Johnson. I just wanted to point out that he had the option to shoot the ball.

Agree. He had a few put backs that he made look easy. The little 5 ft kind that if nothing else should draw fouls. He is capable of putting up shots in close, but he doesn't finish most of the time. Too bad because at 7' he shouldn't get many blocked. No reason that he can't average 10-12 ppg even without set plays.

The Mathis shot would have been fully defended, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have made it.
