GAME 8 PURDUE: Resilience

If anyone had any doubt about this team's mettle and resiliency in handling adversity, they have been erased. The Ohio State game flat out sucked. RU was up 16 cruising along until foul trouble with Myles changed everything and then later when Young went out, our offense collapsed. I was not concerned about that loss but rather trying to get healthy and what lessons would we learn from going from 16 up to 12 down. With Cliff still out and Young expected to be in the lineup we could be relatively optimistic coming into tonight, however we all got a dagger in our spirits when we learned that Ron Harper Jr was out with an ankle injury. That turned a game we should win into a toss up, a game that RU would have dig deep into their reserve of intestinal fortitude to get this win anyway they could. Well guess what, not only did the core rotation bring it when it counted, the much missing in action, RU bench players of Doucoure, Reiber and Palmquist all played key roles in getting RU out to a good start and pretty good size lead. Mathis was easily the player of the game but each and every player played a role in pulling this victory over the finish line.

Note I said RU was up 16 at Ohio State because tonight RU was up 15 at 38-23 riding some hot outside shooting similar to that previous game while perhaps not playing the tightest of defensive and just like the OSU game this one got closer in a hurry. Purdue went on a 30-10 run in just under a 14 minutes stretch to take their biggest lead at 53-48. RU looked all out of sorts offensively. Tez was pressing too much, the bench no longer was contributing, Painter had made some adjustments and I really thought at that point was running circles around Pike. Things looked like they could get out of control. RU was not in foul trouble this time and that might have been just what RU needed to kick them in the ***. Not sure exactly what happened but RU just started to play like the RU we all love and know. Mulcahy hit a 3, then Geo got a steal and a bucket and all of sudden, we had a flame and off they went. See this Rutgers team is a thing of beauty when they play with purpose on the defense and offensive end. There was some incredible vision in getting the ball to the open shooters, Mulcahy hit another 3 and Tez took over.

This was likely Mathis's best game ever at Rutgers. When he plays within himself, he is an incredible player. He hit a couple of clutch baskets that basically won the game for RU. At 6:30 minutes left, a 3 that gave RU a 5 point cushion they maintained, then a jumper at 3 minutes when Purdue cut it to just 1, and then the dagger at 73-68 with a minute left that put RU up 7. Mathis also had his hands all over the final rebound on the last Purdue possession An incredible stat line....9-15...5-5 from 3, 5 boards, 25 points. Credit Mathis for bouncing back after he had a couple of bad plays in a row in this game and I will call myself out for calling him a me player. If Tez can just cut back on those plays and I think this year he really has, skies is the limit for him. I think he gets caught up in having to force plays when he gets touches. Tonight man he was marvelous.

Boy Jacob Young wins the Ironman award tonight. You can tell he was hurting and it definitely effected his shot. He put in a stunning 35 minutes and sealed the game with his 4 important free throws at the end, hitting all 6 in total to give him 13 points. Not a great shooting night and he did really make a few bad decisions during the time where RU just was out of rhythm on offense. Still he gutted it out and showed up when it counted late.

Geo Baker the soul of the team and without Harper we desperately needed the Geo of old. Geo logged 37 minutes, 7-15 shooting and 19 points, he is reasonable close to the Geo of last year. I have no doubt that his leadership was instrumental in that turnaround from down 5 to where RU went on a run of its own of 27-15 to take its biggest 2nd half lead of 75-68. Geo had 10 points in the last 10 minutes, including 4 big free throws. He did exactly what you want your senior leader to do.

Myles adjusted his game and stayed out of foul trouble. I think he played decent D on a very good player in Williams. Williams went for 21 on 10-12 shooting and no doubt I believe that instead of contesting some of these by being really physical Myles may have held back a bit opting not to get into foul trouble. He had 8 boards, a really nifty steal where he turned it over running the court and a nice looking free throw that really shows he is working on his form. Paul Mulcahy needs some attention because he was the stealth player tonight...His two 3s in the 2nd half were beyond huge and great job by him in stepping up with those wide open 3s. 11 points on 3-5 from 3 and no turnovers, this is the kind of performance that will be a nightmare for opposing coaches gameplan going forward. I loved his game tonight.

What can we say about our 3 bench players. Reiber 16 minutes...wtf????!!! If you told me he would get that much time I would have laughed in your face. Reiber two boards, a nice bucket and a free throw, played his role to perfection. You want him to eat minutes and give some fouls. By far he looked more comfortable than in previous games and really changed my thinking of him. Remember we will get Cliff back eventually so Reiber isnt likely to have many 16 minute games going forward but Pike now knows he has an option that can put in the solid minutes. Ditto for Palmquist who drained an open 3 in his 7 minutes. Its about stepping up when given the opportunity. Doucoure I felt was solid, better than vs OSU, 10 minutes, 3 boards and was able to give 3 fouls and able to do a solid job keeping Myles off the court. Yes not sure his teammates trust giving the ball to him but I feel Dourcoure did better tonight with less pressure to perform.

Lets giving a special shout to Coach Pikiell and his staff for getting these 3 going in practice and then trusting them to fulfill their roles on the court. He obviously has been hesitant to use them but we could not have a repeat of OSU so had to try something diffferent. Then without Ron well that is a whole different challenge. It means trying to run things that get shots for Montez and I feel that RU court vision was excellent at times. Teammates trusted one another and that goes back to coaching. I felt that Painter made some adjustments in the way Purdue was running its offense later in the first half and into the 2nd and I think for a time period he was running coaching circles around Pike. Pike usually wins halftime but this time he did not but what Pike won the war. Beyond everything he trusted his players and they stepped up and delivered. Instead of curling into a ball like they did vs OSU when adversity came, RU responded and went around that wall as Michael Jordan would say. The contrast between what happened at OSU and how RU responded tonight could not be so stark. Answering their first loss without their best player in the fashion they did is just another chapter written in the book of Pikiell's Knights. Just when you thought you knew everything about this team and they have impressed you so much you have seen everything, they do something extra ordinary yet again. As I have said in a couple of other recaps, this team has some pluck.

I am not thinking about Iowa too much right now. Its an enormous challenge given the way they shoot from the outside and tough Garza is. We need to get Ron and Cliff and Jacob healthy because its a game where we need to hit on all cylinders. Purdue is good but they are young. Iowa has the experience and playmakers all over the court. RU will need its best.

My comments:

Team - Such a great team effort...all contributed and losing Harp could have been devastating for the team. We big time gritted out a must needed win.

Pike - After the Ohio State game which is the only game I can think of where I thought Pike coached sub par, he rebounded masterfully as he always does - utilizing the bench magnificently and made Edey a non factor and kept Williams to his average. He did not let Purdue bigs dominate us. His usage of the bench was superb.

Montez - what can you say....had the game of his life and well deserved to our unsung hero. Was so clutch.

Oskar - Every one will point to his 3 pointer but I thought his best play was when he dove to the floor for a loose ball and showed toughness after he got body slammed.

Jacob - a gamer....a warrior......left it all out on the court and played within himself. Unsung hero tonight.

Geo - a leader....played a lot of minutes.....calms down team with his prescence.

Reiber - kid can play....is very smart; good defender; has a knack for the ball and showed me something with his jumper that he swished. Needs to play every game.

Myles - great rebound of a game after the Ohio State grand larceny committed on him...thought he played a bit tentative but I'm sure he'll be more assertive next game knowing Reiber can compliment his game.

Mulcahy - does all of the dirty work and he hit some 3's that were critical.

Douc: did nothing to hurt us

Harp / Cliff - get well soon. We need ya !

Wishing the team and coaches a Happy Healthy New year with emphasis on Healthy !

Not really directed at you, bac, but I think people are under-appreciating Doucoure’s contributions tonight. I thought he played really solid defense in the post, doing a good job with positioning and fronting Edey and Williams. He was really scrapping out there, and he wasn’t out of position like he was frequently against OSU.

He also set some nice picks on offense - he actually does a better job than Myles at setting himself and remaining still as our guard moves past him.

Once I heard Harper was out, I changed my pick in the prediction thread and had us losing. This team really is resilient like you said bac. And tough. And gritty.

But what is incredible is that we are actually efficient on offense. I know we went through a 10-minute drought tonight spanning the two halves. But our offensive efficiency rating is now 111.9, which is 17th in the country.

Surprisingly, our defensive efficiency is now at 91.6 for 26th in the country. This is the first time I can remember that our offensive efficiency is higher ranked than our defensive efficiency.

I can’t believe I am typing this, but

We are actually good on offense. Let that sink in.

BAC, great recap as usual. The word that comes to me was said in other threads and uttered by me all night , GUTS!,, It takes guts and heart and confidence and belief in your teammates . Montez showed you his heart and desire to help us win every game he steps on the court for us. His hard work on his shot , which really started to show improvement with about 12 games left last year and after a summer of real hard work. His nonstop aggressive style attacking the basket , which sometimes is not necessary, is part of his game. He has to learn to create contact first , maintain control , and then shoot. It would help if the damn Big 10 refs called the body contact he absorbs instead of the hundreds of tricky tack ******** calls.

Jacob , I could tell was off, hurting as he couldn’t guard tonight and let Thompson hit 4 first half threes and was not the pest on defense. As the game went on , his back tightened him ,and he just gutted it out and hit those sealing foul shots. That was some great mental toughness clearly in significant pain to play 30 plus minutes tonight.

Geo showed some flashes of his old self, with the great steal and drive off the glass , but he still cannot elevate as well and cannot rebound like he is capable when he is healthy. But he hit some big shots tonight and as BAC stated when we lost the lead, our senior got us back on track. Again guts and mental fortitude, which happens to players when they get older and more experience kinda like that hesitation in the lane midway through the second half. We need a full strength Geo to go very deep in the tourney and win this Big 10 championship.

Paul and Myles were also instrumental in the win tonight along with the freshman , Reiber, with a nice turn around jumper and some rebounds . I have no problem with his taking threes because Pike says he can shoot but where he took that one from was not ideal. I think he has good pick and pop potential and can get some offensive rebounds and put backs . Oscar hit a big 3 for his confidence and had a nice boxout , where he was tackled , and some rebounds. He has to continue to move and get open and Geo , Jacob, Paul , Ron or Montez will find him.

One last point about Duke , who did a real good job of denying position to their bigs and played good defense , was much more serviceable with less minutes which gave Myles enough of a blow to deal with Williams all night. Again , he showed up and had some guts.
The win tonight shorthanded , hurt , exhausted from chasing Purdue around screens all night , was won on pure GUTS! Wow , how this team and players have grown up under Pike.

My turning point of game.....

Geo Baker gets pulled because of defense after 1st media TO of 2nd half. Our defensive intensity drastically improved from that point forward and Geo was a different player when he came back

I'll admit. When I heard Harper was out and with Cliff out and JY hobbling I had this one in the loss column
Ill be honest, i emotionally bet $550 to win $500 on purdue after the harper news broke. Happy to have lost the money.

Another great recap Bac. For all of the doubters still out there, we are very good!

We need the Defense to tighten up some, but as long as we move and swing the ball around on offense, we should always get an open shot. Couple that with getting out on the break off turnovers(which did not happen at all tonight), we will be outstanding.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Of course you did. Thanks for the honesty, but you will not think we are good until we get to the Elite 8 or Final 4. You don't believe in our coach and you still don't think we run an offense, which you are wrong on both counts.

But, that's OK, people that know basketball believe in our team and know that we are good.

Well we really dont run an offense but its getting harder for me not to believe this team can make a run. Theyre a resilient bunch. I still have my questions but theyve proven me wrong more than a couple times.

My concern as ive said since the beginning of the year when i thought we were a bubble team was that we really lack depth and an injury or two could derail this thing. Tonight montez stepped up. 5-5 from 3 from him and 52% as a team from long i didnt think was possible

Total TEAM effort. Everyone on the floor contributed. As if I couldn't love this team even more... are you kidding me!?! Sadly I was distracted by a family game night while watching and can't wait to rewatch intently.

We all know the stars of the show tonight with Mathis having a career staple performance and Geo getting it done. Mulchay nailing multiple big 3's and Young being a warrior battling through pain.

What was really great to see was Pike calling on trusting Reiber and Palmquist early and they delivered in a game we could have packed it in as a loss and tried to rest up and focus on getting Harper and maybe Cliff back for Iowa. This gives them both experience and confidence moving forward. Maybe they arent called upon a ton, but if one of the main rotation guys is struggling, give them a shot to perform moving forward. Basketball is a streaky game and the hot hand and off nights are very real.

Reiber - told you all he could play and has a good feel for the game with much more skill than Duke. Had a really nice under control drive and turn around jumper.

Palmquist - hit a 3 and dove on the floor. This after taking a charge the other game. He is showing a willingness to hustle and throw his body around along with his 3 ball at his height which makes him an intriguing option off the bench

Doucoure - seemingly did much better and battled for post position well. Happy to see him contribute tonight at a higher level

Why is any of this a surprise at this point? It happens in all sports, pro and college, the longer you are together the better you become, pretty simple formula. RU's Top 6 players have been around this program for 3-4 years, the familiarity with each other is second to none. This is what program building and college basketball has become. Duke, Kentucky, UNC, and other 1 and done factories got lazy, rested on their laurels, and thought the Zion Williamsons's quick fixes of the world would keep them on top forever Those days are over in college basketball when you have the B1G, more than half the Big 12 and some Big East teams filled with 3-4 year players, being extensions of the coaching staffs, running college basketball's top 25 right now with other mid majors and some p6 teams following suit. It isn't changing anytime soon, no matter how many #1, #2 and #3 HS players in the country you put on one team for one year.

PS. Through 4 B1G games, RU is shooting 38 of 85 from 3, 44.7%
Purdue has lost big to good 7-1 Clemson and blew it to meh 4-3 Miami team this year, I think Pike knew he could get away with this.

You have the capability to see football in a way that is hard for others, myself very much included. You don’t have the same for basketball. And I’m really not trying to be an a**. In general I love your posts

Imo, the Big Ten is very deep but also overrated, if that makes sense. Very very few teams in college basketball can go as deep as us around the perimeter. You never want to lose a Harper, but on a game by game basis he can be replaced if someone steps up which we have the unique ability to do with our outside talent

We have a HUGE problem with out johnson in the game when we need him. Frankly, if we could be up or keep it close he could sit for the first 20 minutes for all I care. He is so important in the second half it’s almost impossible to overstate.

We are a top 10 team when healthy

I wont dispute that. Admittedly im much more knowledgable with football than basketball. I struggle in two particular areas.

1) Running back evaluation
2) projecting freshman basketball players haha

Additional observations--yes this was a total team effort with contributions from everyone, especially the frosh and Doucoure. But what's implied but unsaid--unlike past year's teams especially during the Jordan fiasco, this is a team full of quality basketball players who could be playing significant minutes at any of the other Big Ten teams. Credit goes to the players but also to Pike and staff for developing the talent. One overlooked team improvement is their 3pt. shooting--it was important last night especially in changing momentum. Another improvement is foul shooting particularly during crunch time. Even Myles looks better at the line with an improved form. One area where it seems we've slipped somewhat is rebounding , especially on offensive rebounds. This is where we've missed Akwasi but Cliff's return should help turn this around. You gotta love this team--tough hard-nosed players who don't flinch despite adversity. Grinders all..Just like Pike.

That was a program win. A mix of depth, luck, toughness, and shooting fortune. It is truly incredible how far this program has come in 2-3 years. We went from thiam and doucoure starting to winning conference games without arguably our best player ever and best recruit ever.

Agree with the comments above about what a nice win this was. Lots of contributions that will hopefully build some confidence and increase our depth going forward. The one area that I continue to be concerned about is rebounding. Too many second chance opportunities and at times I just don't see enough guys crashing the boards. They seem to be expecting someone else to leap up and grab it. This may be something we will have to deal with all year and where we miss Akwasi and Shaq to a lesser extent, the most. Because several of our bigs are young they are less physically developed and thus not sure it is reasonable to expect this to change as the year progresses.

Doucoure was a complete disaster defensively against OSU. Tonight, I actually thought he was exponentially better, working really hard to front, hustling, and providing important backup minutes to ensure Myles can stay out of foul trouble. RU didn't just maintain when he was on the floor, as someone put up top, the team was +5. In reality, all the team needs from Doucure is to not notice a huge difference when he's on the court---he's not needed to be an all star, but we can't have him hurt us. Tonight, I thought he filled his role and more.

As good as Paul is, if he's going to be a true asset to the team we can't have him be a liability on offense that opposing teams can sag off of. He doesn't need to be a big time scorer, but he needs to be able to hit open threes. Tonight he did that in a big way--I hope to see that continue.

If you told me Ron Harper would be out and yet we would make 11 total 3-pointers with 5 different players making one (not including RHJ) I would have not believed you. This team keeps raising the bar somehow

I understand your concern but it is easily correctable . Last year, . Geo , Tez, and Ron, and Paul would grab a rebound and go or look for Jacob on the outlet. Early on , especially when Myles and Cliff played together, they swallowed up every defensive rebound and a number of the offensive. , making the guys complacent. Tez, Geo and even Ron are not going to the offensive boards but once Cliff went out they should have doubled their efforts but instead reduced their crashing of theglass. Rewatch the Ohio State game as they outrebounded us 45-25 , which never happens, a number of offensive rebounds that led to second chance points hurt us in that game besides the ref stealing the game and Jacob’s injury. Our guards have to get back to crashing both the offensive and defensive boards and Pike should drill that home.

Watch iowa saturday and the sets they run. Outside of motion we really dont run any sort of offense. What sets do we run? We never run any floppy sets which i think are the best sets u can run
Interesting you say this. During the zoom practice back in November, Pike (I think) kept yelling floppy during one segments of the practice. I didn't know what that meant. What exactly is a floppy set?
