Now that outside shooting and FT have cleaned up (at least for now) curious what people see as the biggest weaknesses on the team moving forward and areas of improvement. Other then injuries what’s our Achilles hill on this team?
No NCAA Tournament was disappointing not just for 2019-20 but this season as well. Who knows how far last year's team would have gone, would not have been shocked it was Sweet 16.Biggest weakness is never having been there before. First potential Conference title. First run in March Madness.Team seems strong willed do may not be a factor. But they are all human. Playing let's say Nova in a Sweet 16 game can be sobering.
Based on stats, Rutgers is solid against the 3. In the last two years, teams have shot in the low 30%. Is this a case of perception overtaking reality?Defending the 3-pt shot. We have been lucky that we have not gone up against a good 3-pt shooting team.
It appears that way. The lack of non-conference games has prevented the development of one or two of the freshmen who could fill that need. If last night against Purdue is a good sign, perhaps they can be a bigger factor for Rutgers on the home stretch.Lack of forward depth
Weak ankles.
Last year it seemed t times Rutgers made an attempt to post Myles. This year there seems to be no attempt to establish a low post presence.Along the lines of lacking reliable post-scoring, we don’t seem to get other teams’ big men in foul trouble too much — not the biggest issue but something to consider
Good one that I did not consider.Biggest weakness is never having been there before. First potential Conference title. First run in March Madness.Team seems strong willed do may not be a factor. But they are all human. Playing let's say Nova in a Sweet 16 game can be sobering.
I thought they went to him a couple times yesterday.Last year it seemed t times Rutgers made an attempt to post Myles. This year there seems to be no attempt to establish a low post presence.
Palm and Reiber are awesome at it? I think I need more of a sample size to say those two do anything better then the regular rotation guys.interior rebounding has been pretty lackluster with Cliff hurt. Several of our guys don't really box out; and then others (like Palmquist, Mulcahy, and Reiber) are awesome at it. So its a bit of a mixed bag. We need Cliff back. Simple as that.
We don't miss as many shots this year. Fewer chances to rebound brick shots.Offensive rebounding has not been as strong this year as it was last year. This is where we miss Akwasi who was very good at offensive rebounding. On the other hand, since our outside shooting has improved, it will reduce opportunities for offensive rebounds.
After Eugene Omoruyi and Freeman, Pike realized playing the offense through the post killed the flow of the offense. Rutgers has so many options on the perimeter. It makes sense to take advantage of your strength. Besides, teams who make deep runs in March Madness usually have great guard play. Teams outside of the northeast usually don't handle guard dominate teams well. Nova and UConn had great guards during their runs. Even Michigan State title in the 2000s was based around a great guard.Notwithstanding yesterday’s 14-17, I still think FTs are a major weakness. Our average is still 62%, which is probably worst in the conference.
Agree that post scoring is a weakness.
Once we get back Harper and Cliff, our rebounding will be fine.
Amazing to say that 3-pt shooting is now an affirmative STRENGTH.
Defending the 3-pt shot. We have been lucky that we have not gone up against a good 3-pt shooting team.
Rutgers could have mitigated the situation had they had a normal non-conference schedule, but now they have to do it on the run. Reiber (6'10) and Palmquist (6'8) can add size and depth. This would ease pressure on Myles and Cliff with guys who are a better threat to score than Duc.Depth\
Interesting thought here in that at 6'8" Palm's could maybe play some legit pf minutes?Rutgers could have mitigated the situation had they had a normal non-conference schedule, but now they have to do it on the run. True. However, at best Palmquist is about 6’5 and reiber 6’6Rutgers could have mitigated the situation had they had a normal non-conference schedule, but now they have to do it on the run. I dunno, if that is the case then everybodies #'s are inflated, thus they will be OK.True. However, at best Palmquist is about 6’5 and reiber 6’6
Agree on alot of the above except palmquist playing the 4. Way too weakI dunno, if that is the case then everybodies #'s are inflated, thus they will be OK.
Reiber has the size to play the 4. Palms has the size to play the 3 at the very least, and in todays college game, to play the 4 at times.
He looks like a pretty solid body imo. I'm sure there are pf's I would not match him up against, but there will be times when the matchups allow it I would think.Agree on alot of the above except palmquist playing the 4. Way too weak
