Whatever he can contribute as a player who has seen these games and teams can only help down the road. If you can find 24 to 25 minutes between Caleb and Mag, it reduces the workload elsewhere. Plus in late game situations, you add a veteran who is 75 to 80% at the FT line.

I worry he is doing this to placate teammates/fans who he feel he may be letting them down as depth cost us the last game. I gotta trust Pike he won’t let him play without doctor’s clearance...backs aren’t something to mess with. If he is truly healed then of course this is a welcome development and bumps up both por floor and our ceiling as a team.

What? You think Pike would play him against doctor’s recommendation?

More likely he's doing it because he desperately WANTS to be on the court, and all of the injuries to his teammates have given him that much more motivation. He's not "placating" anybody except himself.

McConnell likely gets the minutes that would have gone to Mag. Mag was hurt by not getting more game time reps with the shortening of OOC cupcakes.

Reading way too much into it...imo.
And of course Pike wouldn't let him play in a game without full clearance.

Fans act as if he hasn't been running up and down the court as the opposition during scouting or practices. Caleb is capable of playing a few minutes here or there, he's not going to be asked to play 32 minutes a game.

“Kids can try to manipulate things”... like your post?... if the kid feels good and is cleared by doctors then by all means l suggest we allow him to play.
Minipulate?
That's one of the weirder things I've heard in relationship to a kid coming back from injury.
He has to show the coaches, trainers and doctors he can play...he can't minipulate a thing.

"Fans" were told, in a year that is free, he was going to take time off and finally get healthy. Practicing and being a member of the scout team would go counter with the notion of resting one's back and getting better.

I am very happy it appears there is hope of him coming back. We desperately need what a 85-100% healthy Caleb can bring. It doesn't change the fact that everything here doesn't 100% add up.

I'd think with some back injuries there is a lot of gray area. Could be that only Caleb knows how healthy he really is.

Asking the question what has changed between now and when the decision was made for him to be out for the season is valid. Is his back feeling better? what was the original diagnosis?

It is also possible his back never heals and he has to play with pain for the rest of his life. If there is a fracture it won't heal.

McConnell announced his intention to sit out on 10/2, two weeks before practices began. Now, almost 3 months of practices later, he's probably responded better than he thought he would, so since there is no risk or losing eligibility, he decided he wants to try to play. Why does everything have to be some conspiracy theory when the simpler explanation makes more sense?

Hopefully Caleb will come back fully recovered and not a moment sooner..
Don't want him to be back too soon and have to be out again, even if it means be back next year.

Agree...seems like we don't know what we don't know- but at least we know it!~

Thinking about EO's injury. I live in OR and have friends (U of O alums) who go courtside despite the stay in place orders (haven't actually socialized with them for > 9 months).

I'm not aware if EO wound up getting surgery on his knee or not? Do we know...?

EO's been tearing it up at OR ...but is there something about Caleb's injury and EO's that could have been handled better? If no surgery EO is sort of like a time bomb: at some point you'd expect his knee or the other to give out (not wishing this on him...just observing).

Injury might not be as bad as some assumed. Sitting out could have just been mostly about maximizing his college career. Now that he knows he'll have an extra yr regardless, and the team could really use em. Sittin is just not worth missing out on playing ball and doing be things with his teammates this yr

I was gonna post something like that.
And no way this coach is gonna send him out there if he's not healthy.

Pike would never in a million years jeapordize a young man's health or career. If he plays that means he's good to go

I trust that he and Pikiell are smarter than that.

If anyone has followed the program closely or watched / listened to Pike's media conferences for the past month, this tweet by Rothstein is not news at all. We've known for a month that Caleb has been participating in practices albeit in a limited way. Nothing in what Pikiell said today (see Carino's article for more of what Pikiell actually said) indicated that his recent participation is suddenly different. Pikiell has mentioned several times that it's a possibility that Caleb might come back and even Caleb didn't rule it out a month ago. I hope he comes back but this is not news.

This would be a huge positive if he can come back and give us 15 quality minutes. A very versatile player on both ends.

This isn’t bad news for sure. I am not sure it is new news.
That's what I am wondering. Didn't we know he was practicing but still not planning on playing this year previously. Does this mean he is practicing at a different level now?

Caleb would obviously add depth and another veteran. He could also help shave a few minutes off some of the other studs to keep them fresher all year

Just got a text for NJ Advance Media's text service stating essentially the same thing I posted a few minutes ago about the Rothstein tweet being month old "news".

Also, Mag is available.

The news is that his injury has not precluded him from continuing his practicing.

We knew that a month ago. Rothstein's tweet implied that this was some new revelation that he's been taking part in practice not that he's been practicing all along and hasn't had a setback. The only thing new was that Rothstein listened to this press conference and either wasn't on the previous ones or wasn't paying attention to them. He's a "national" writer so wouldn't expect him to be on all of them. Brian Fonseca confirmed what I said.

Again - we knew he practiced a month ago. We should all feel better about his return knowing he has been continually practicing with seemingly no setbacks. That is in fact new news.

It seems like you guys just assume since he announced he was out that means he was going to sit on the side not touch any thing or do anything and just ride a stationary bike.

1 I'm sure he gets treatment however much needed. Two hes probably been at the very least getting shots up and doing light running. In casinos article it said he's been a limited participant doing drills. So that means he's not cleared for contact but he can do the other non contact things. Once he's cleared for contact than a return will be more imminent. Sitting out doesn't mean he just doesn't do anything.
