Who guards Ron Harper Jr?

In what could be a continuing thread the rest of the season... who guards Ron Harper Jr?

Illinois plays with Kofi and 4 guards typically. That means one of them is guarding Ron who will be much bigger and stronger than whoever that might be.

It looks like Dosunmu is the second tallest starter at 6'5 but does not have the weight to bang with Ron down low.

Does Illinois start Giorigi and go with a big lineup? If so, can Giorgi stay with Ron on the perimeter?

While Ron will always be a matchup problem, it appears to be an exaggerated case with Illinois as they dont have anyone who appears to be a decent matchup

The twin towers lineup would be interesting here. It would certainly take them out of what they want to do lineup wise

If they could hold up on perimeter d it would give RU a big advantage i think

From what I’ve watched of Illinois the year, I think they throw Da’monte Williams at him. Only listed at 6’3, but he is a bigger body (over 6 rebounds a game). Don’t think Giorgi can hang with Ron, and I doubt they want Ayo to risk foul trouble.

It's interesting particularly because of how well Cliff runs the court...he can run like a Guard so the Illini will have to pick their poison on who Kofi can hang with...my guess he hangs with Myles and leave Cliff in a mismatch with anyone they may have.

I don’t like the twin towers against Illinois because of potential foul trouble with the bigs. If we wind up with anyone but Cliff or Myles on Cockburn it’s going to be a disaster.

OTOH having anyone but Kofi guarding Cliff or Myles is a big problem for them

It would be a classic battle of which team takes better advantage of the mismatches. It could cause either team to go zone. I dont think we see the twin towers lineup much this game. Its an interesting strategy discussion though

It will be Williams. He plays the 4. He’ll give up a few inches but very strong. Giorgi and Kofi very rarely play at the same time and Giorgi definitely won’t start on the floor with Kofi.
