Means nothing but this is the first time we've seen something like this in a long time.
CBS Sports' Jerry Palm released his bowl projections after this weekend and this one caught my eye.

Dec. 30 Duke's Mayo Bowl (Charlotte) North Carolina vs. Rutgers

If we can win two of the last three I think it's possible.

No matter what happens our bowl game is this Saturday!

Beat that team from Pa.

Remember the old days, when they'd say "There are scouts from the Orange, Gator and XXX Bowls here to see Team Y play." It's amazing how different it is; they were actually trying to find a) entertaining teams and b) intriguing matchups.

So different now. Not necessarily better or worse...
So different. Better for the non blue blood teams getting better opportunities. More games with bad matchup. Pluses and minuses.
It's funny that bowl reps still show up at games and know they will have no shot at either team.

That's the third B1G bowl to cancel this year. I wonder if the cancelations will push some B1G teams to smaller bowl games and cause some G5 to be left out?
There are very few bowl games without an affiliation anymore. I don't recall any that have an at large opening. There are very few that have a out to grab a better league team.

I think the Belk Bowl (against Army) and the Cheeze-It Bowl were left off the list. Everywhere I've checked list those as B1G tie-ins for the 2020 season. Has something changed?

FYI: the Orange Bowl until 2025 to take the B1G one more time. It could be possible the B1G get selected this year since this an unusual situation. Remember TV will play a bigger role in selecting some matchups.

The Belk Bowl is now the Duke’s Mayo bowl. It’s on the list of five above.

The Cheeze-it Bowl is ACC v B12.

I gotta believe some of the smaller bowls have a one-time out clause. It's one way they can survive as they typically produce matchups that don't catch the average viewer's attention.

Very little do have outs. The outs are mostly kicked in if the conference doesn't have qualified school in that slot. So this year everyone is qualified so no switches will be needed. This isn't 15 years ago. These conference affiliations are simply strong legal agreements.
