OT: 2021 Baseball HOF Ballot Released.

HOF selection for 2021 starts. You can vote for up to 10 but even with the steroids guys I don't think there are 10 worthy this year of the Hall.
Who's your vote for?
My non steroid ballot in no particular order:

Jeff Kent
Todd Helton
Curt Schilling (PEDs?) not sure

Numbers don't lie, but at no time in his playing days did I ever consider Jeff Kent HoF material. Hall of Famers need to jump off the screen at you. using comparative stats we will have an interesting case in Nick Markakis.

And don't get me started on these third and fourth chance "committees"

I have Helton & Schilling. Next years ballot might have no one getting in. Although A-Rod is on it. It'll be interesting to see how many votes he gets as it'll be the final year for Bonds & Clemens in 2022.

Colbert, Parker is a good one. Said to someone I would take Parker over Bryce Harper any day. Harper who hits .260 it seems now. Parker with a gun in right field.

Helton = No
Schilling = No (several HOF moments, but not a HOF career)

I'm a Yankee fan, and Swisher seems like a guy I'd tip one back with, good teammate, but HOF?

No. Agree, shouldn't even be on the ballot IMO.

Rules to get on the ballot

Five years after retirement, any player with 10 years of major league experience who passes a screening committee (which removes from consideration players of clearly lesser qualification) is eligible to be elected

Swisher might actually get a vote. Guys like Haren, Victorino and Cuddyer will get shut out.

Here is how I would handle it...

I always use my 👀 as one of the main measuring sticks for stuff like this. So for that IMO Bonds and Clemens are there just from watching them play live and also using my 👀 for reading their stats.

And for both these examples they were both HoF guys from what I saw with my eyes and the boxscore well before the other stuff ever came up in conversation.

The other thing I always say in these discussions is if you have to think about it, is he really a HoF?

exactly, plenty of JAG and all-star players used steroids... Bonds and Clemens, as well as ARod even before their obvious steroid days were already in that potential HOF picture.

David Cone’s stats: 194-126 (60.6 win %) 3.46 ERA 1.256 WHIP years pitched 1986-2003
Curt Schilling stats: 216-146 (59.7 win %) 3.46 ERA 1.137 WHIP years pitched 1988-2007


Cone received HOF votes from 4% of voters, Schilling from 70%.

I don't know who said it first, but I always liked the mantra that if you have to even think about it, the candidate doesn't belong. Admittedly though, it's a bit too late for numerous borderline candidates already elected.

I would like to see HOFs of all sports more celebrate HOF moments as well as HOF careers. Schilling definitely had a few HOF moments, but not a HOF career (same is true about Eli).

But Sal Marciano (or Jerry Gerard - LOL) on WPIX was the first one I heard say it.

Football to me is a little different because lots of times 10 other guys have to do the right thing before you’re successful. This while 11 guys on the other side are trying to stop you.

And for certain positions more than others.
Same can be said for baseball players and their teammates, both offensively and defensively. And even then, probably only starting pitchers can occasionally have outsized influence on the outcome of a game.

No one is trying to tackle Mike Trout in centerfield when he going for a fly ball.

Too many moving pieces in football compared to just about any sport.

From that list...Kent would be the closest in my mind but the one guy that should be Auto on that is is Manny.

disagree and the hof has already been diluted enough. 280 lifetime avg should never be considered unless hammering 600+ hrs. It's bad enough we got a guy with a 40yr career never hitting more than 40 a yr in simply because he leads the majors in hrs

hof is hof, no need to dilute

Schilling . Those big post season performances - over the course of 12 years - have to count for something .
Bonds - look at his numbers before the steroids and he should be in.
Kent and vizquel - I wouldn’t vote for them, but could see them getting in.
