Been doing 1-2 PD sessions a day all week about virtual teaching. I'm happy to be going back into the classroom (hopefully) but I'm surprised at how much of the classroom experience can be duplicated via technology. We're using a combo of Google classroom and Zoom, but are getting supplements via sites like Padlet, Flipgrid, and many others. Also, our district has paid subscriptions for Brianpop, Epic, Raz kids, Freckle and Dreambox to give those who want a little extra what they need. This is on a K-2 level in my district. Other grade bands have other site subscriptions.

Luckily for private schools God will prevent the students from getting COVID.
What will prevent COVID is large classrooms, small class sizes, major facility upgrades, detailed planning, live streaming for those that need to stay home, large campuses for outdoor classes and activities, plenty of PPE for facility/staff, etc.

That's awesome. They should be back with their peers if they're able to be.
How do they handle lunch and recess or gym? I know you said large campus but can the children play outdoors together or separated at all times? Do they switch classes at all or same classroom all day?

This is so sad. Go to 1:50. My son is a senior in this district, and this is extremely disappointing.

Teachers have been working “feverishly” all Summer to get the schools reopened? lol.

Sounds like many teachers have caught a fever and now refuse to return to the classroom.

Lunch is in the classroom or outside, no dining hall. You can bring lunch or lunch can be ordered from dining services and brought to the classroom (everything is disposable, so once a child is done, everything is thrown away).

Recess and gym are outdoors. Grades stick together with no close cross exposure to other grades as of now. Each grade has 1-3 pods which are in separate classrooms, limited to 10 students. The grades will do some outdoor activities together.

In general, the students stay in their classroom with the specialist teachers moving from room to room as needed.

Happy soon to be first day to your little girl. I'm sure she is eager to be in the classroom with her friends!😊

Very sad that this district and its administration are still unprepared and lacked proper planning. Everyone had 6 months to figure this out.

That’s your best answer to defend NJ teachers who refuse to return to class?

Sorry but No Sale.

Why do you have a problem if people retire or quit their job because they do not like the circumstances. The districts can hire other teachers. The job and benefits are so good it should be easy

For N.J. school districts seeking to go all-remote, you better have a good reason, Murphy warns

So.. what Murphy is saying is that his internal polls show voters hate him for keeping schools closed.

That.. "governor".. is so freaking arbitrary. I thought there were scientists and data and numbers that would call the shots... not "good reasons".. not a convincing argument from schools.

Knightmoves,
I'm still waiting for your plan. I've given you 4 days and haven't heard from you.
You can do it!

Im still collecting information and reading the tea leaves from Murphy and the school districts about reopening.

Am I responsible for a solution for your class of students?

Last year's remote learning was a disaster with Google classroom in public schools, for teachers and students on the fly. Five Phases of 12 days of work, very little interaction between teacher and student over the last 60 days, 5-15 minute video to watch here and there from teachers, a written message in Google Classroom every day to be read, no accountability for attendance, only a few video conferences over 60 days using Google Meet between students and teachers for thirty minutes where not all students were required to show, difficulty sending in work, editing forms, teachers receiving work blank or partial work, resend work, corrections. I can only imagine how it was for parents with multiple kids.

Hundreds, maybe in the thousands, of teachers opted out for the 2020-21 year because of age, preexisting conditions or family dynamic of having children of their own. You can't blame it on one thing, it's a myriad of issues. The next date of evaluation is Nov 30 for our district, of in person teaching evaluation, I think the 60 day mark of school year.

First day today seems to be better and well planned already using See Saw and Zoom Conferencing going on 2 hours for my child with little breaks given here and there. Accountability for attendance. More like a school setting, already.

Lol. You know that’s not how this works.

Tom1944 (a.k.a, Brianoc) always plays this game. Without a direct crime, firing a tenured union teacher is practically impossible, regardless of job performance. This is just one of the many reasons why the public school system is so screwed up.

If an employee does not show up for work they can be terminated

There is precedent on that.

If the school does not do it that is on them

For us it was just brutal. 1st and K. Plus, my wife had her hands full with her Special Ed class. Normally she has only 3-4 graders. With all the restructuring, she also has 1-2 graders as well. And it’s not just the kids. She’s been doing tech support for hours before the classes even started just to get the parents to login with the kids. We probably said one word to each other all day. Just passing each other like lunatics from one fire to the next. Is it x-mas break yet?

Oh boy. Not good and sorry to hear that. I don't envy anyone with young children who are also trying to manage working and the kids.
Start a countdown until Thanksgiving recess and post it on the fridge. Lol
I hope the days get less hectic.

It gets better once you're in a rhythm. Days super-busy, but keep them regimented and eventually you fall into a pace. Of course, as soon as you do, expect bombs to drop regularly and blow up your system, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

Been at it for a few weeks now and think I have the hang of it ...maybe.
