OT: Funny Business

Let’s lighten things up a little on a dreary Sunday in a dreary year.
Who is the comic who made you bust a gut laughing? I’m not necessarily talking about your favorite comic - maybe that’s George Carlin, but Eddie Murphy did a routine one time that caused you to lose it. So the answer would be Eddie. For me - and I’m not his biggest fan, it was when Shasha Baron Cohen would do that Ali G. Character.

Conversely who is the comic who never made you laugh and you just don’t get? I don’t think he’s as big as he was a few years ago but for me it’s Dane Cook.

I saw him at count Basie before he passed . He had a good routine about children play dates

Larry Miller had some routines which had me laughing so hard my head hurt.

I really enjoy Sebastian Maniscalco’s work now.

I also like Colin Quinn’s “teaching” sets.

Bill Burr is someone where I just don’t see it.

Would Will Ferrell be considered a comic? Have never found him entertaining in the least.

I have been watching a lot of comedy lately. My daughter is taking an on-line comedy class so we are constantly watching.

I like comedians that work fairly clean. I also like clever. Chris Rock’s bit on bad apples is great.

I used to like David Brenner a lot

I was never a fan of Andrew Dice Clay

This was quite a long time ago and the names are probably not familiar to most here. BUT,in 1973 up at Kutchers Country Club(HOTEL),I saw Marty Brill.He had me going so hard that I could hardly breathe.For a good period of time too. The other guy ,on a different night but the same place was Jack Eagles.Same reaction on my part.Had to be good memorable stuff. Lordy,that was 47 years ago.

I know everyone liked Jerry Seinfeld. To me his whining act just didn't work and stand up sucks. The characters on the TV show were funny but he wasn't.


Murphy, Carlin and Gaffigan are my favorites

The Marx Brothers! They would have me in tears everytime. Summer of '75 I was watching my first Marx Brothers movie. My parents who were sleeping heard me downstairs laughing my *** off. They thought what the heck was going on. I was never one to stay up late so mom came down to investigate. I never heard of them before. She tried to explain to me who they were but I kept laughing to hard to listen. She returns to bed and a minute later my dad comes down so I think I'm in trouble. He says "A Night at the Races! I love that picture!" Now two of us are cracking up. With in minutes the whole family is watching it with mom in the kitchen cooking us anything we wanted. Occasionally yelling out a line right before it happened. We all watched many Marx Brothers movies together after that night. Still funny today.

I know watching the whole movie is a hell of a lot different than watching highlights on YouTube. But I think Buster Keaton was a game changer with the stunts in his movies.

Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin were about the same in the silent era.. all excellent at what they did with physical comedy. I suppose in that light, John Ritter was great.

While at RU, I went to a comedy show at the Busch Student Center. The comic who opened totally bombed. He was telling really bad racial jokes, etc. and it was like he was totally unprepared and making it up on the fly. You could see all the students squirm in thier seats and feel the uncomfortableness as the act got worse and worse. The comics who came on after did much better, but funny, I don't remember them. But I'll never forget the first comic and would probably recognize him today. Weird?

Steven Wright was funny but I can see people not thinking so. Whenever I hear someone say "it's a small world" what pops in my head is his joke "but I wouldn't want to paint it". Not that funny written but his delivery of it cracked me up

If you're into comedians as I am you have to check out Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee on Netflix. It's Jerry Seinfeld picking up a comedian in a car he thinks matches them then they go and get coffee. Truly a show about nothing. Even if you don't like Seinfeld you'll love this show. The main theme is the craft of comedy but it's random conversation. It's not an interview show at all. He has had every major comedian on it. The vast majority of these guys are truly funny off the cuff. I highly recommend it

Someone mentioned Jim Gaffigan, I tried watching his bits, some of it I chuckled but I never understood the love for him.

Gaffigan is genius. No one else is consistently as funny.
I saw some of Fluffy in Netflix....he was the least funny comedian I've ever seen.

It’s funny when it was first on we all watched and loved it, the series.

Even in syndication initially I still liked it a lot too. But now...annoying, all of them. The side characters are what I like now.
