Chancellor Carol Christ sent the following message to the campus community on Monday:

Some of you are aware of the tragic death earlier this week of third-year UC Berkeley student Seth Smith. Seth was walking near his off-campus apartment on Dwight Way on Monday evening when he was shot and fatally wounded.

Seth was 19 years old, majoring in economics, and was due to graduate in spring 2021. He came to UC Berkeley from Clarksburg, CA.

This is a senseless tragedy that affects all of us as a campus where the growth and development of our students underpins our entire mission. We offer our deepest sympathy to Seth’s family, friends, teachers, fellow students, and our community.

This news will undoubtedly raise concern about community safety. UCPD and the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) have responsibility for patrolling campus property and the city, respectively, and share a deep commitment to public safety. BPD is investigating the incident and is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of all responsible suspects. BPD asks anyone with information about Seth’s killing to call the Homicide Unit at (510) 981-5741 or the department’s 24-hour non-emergency line at (510) 981-5900.

We realize this is a difficult time for those of you who knew Seth. It is important to know that individuals may express their grief differently and we need to respect the different ways people react and support each other in the days and weeks ahead. Many of you may have had a close relationship with Seth and are feeling a sense of loss and disbelief. Others, like many of us, are experiencing stress, grief and anxiety related to the coronavirus pandemic and the recent murders of George Floyd, Riah Milton, and other Black Americans.

Many of you will get comfort from your friends, family, spiritual leaders or other student groups. We also invite you to talk to a counselor at University Health Services (UHS) if you are concerned about yourself or anyone else in your community. Stanford or Rutgers? A wise student athlete would go with Rutgers, Stanford is way overrated and California is an absolute mess, rather be in Jersey. The only way you might chose Stanford is if academics was your only consideration, however, for a top football athletic prospect it really is a no-brainer, the B1G dwarfs the PAC, and the opportunity to play for Greg Schiano pretty much dwarfs all of the other B1G program coaches. The correct choice in this case is clearly Rutgers, unarguable.

Have you ever seen their campus or the co-eds? Hard to say no to Stanford.

My daughter (non athlete) wanted to be involved in fashion merchandising and attended Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, If you want to get involved in the fashion industry you couldn't have a better choice. She went there for two years and loved living in the city but there were a lot of aspects of college life she was missing. We went to every RU football game from about 2004 until 2010 and she really missed watching college football. Also there really was no campus. The other kids who go there are also important. Her remarks to me about the FIT kids were that all the girls thought that they would be America's Next Top Model and she wanted to go to a school where at least a couple of the guys were straight. She ended up transferring to Kentucky for her last two years and is successful in merchandising in Atlanta now.
There are so many aspects that kids have to consider when choosing a school. I hope this kid goes with us but he and his family need to choose the best fit for him. I think GS can show him that Rutgers is that fit (even though he never won the Big East).

A lot of it is "fit" but the tough part, like your daughter, you don't feel the "fit" until you are there for a while. Just like FIT is the holy grail for fashion, it doesn't mean it is for everyone but if they accept you, you will usually go.
My son had a few good offers and could have gone somewhere other than Rutgers but he had the chance to spend a couple of days with his potential teammates and the main reason he didn't choose a school down in Fla or Ga was that he just didn't fell the "fit" with them. He is a Jersey boy and just the music they listened too, the way they spoke, what they lakied to do, etc...just didn't seem like a place he wanted to be where he would either have to be the outsider or try to fit in with things he really didn't like. Rutgers and his future teammates just felt like home to him.
But...hard to battle with Stanford if they admit you. The biggest argument in a battle like that is what I always say...If you are Greg you tell them to go ahead and enjoy a beautiful campus and that it is a really great school but "while there, try to meet a local parent you trust in those two days, because if your son gets sick or has an injury, you may want someone there with him for the first couple of days so he isn't laying in the hospital bed by himself while you are trying to get a flight across the country to hold his hand and tell him it is going to be alright"

I toured the campus and attended a football game about 20 years ago. The campus was pretty, I just remember how spread out it was, they don’t call it The Farm for nothing. The game had a nice crowd but it was strictly a wine and cheese affair, lacked the intensity of some B1G stadiums I have visited. They did have some cute coeds, but nothing like what I saw at USC, ASU, and UCLA. If you want to major in coeds and really don’t care about academics than go to SDSU, I have never seen anything like it, but I digress. Big time college football, high intensity atmosphere, great education, and a fair # of coeds, Rutgers is your choice, hands down.

If the kid is seriously academically oriented and the idea of California is appealing.. he should go west. But he cannot go wrong choosing Rutgers either. If he will get the degree, the Stanford name is worth more. But if distance will cause difficulties.. and sometimes that's hard to predict.. he might be more likely to earn a Rutgers degree.

And if he were any of ours' son, we'd want him to be in this position. Good for him. I tell you what though.. If I thought he was good enough to play in the NFL after college.. I'd want him to pick Rutgers so I wouldn't have to travel to see him play. I know GS can prep kids for the NFL.
