Gaylord was a big cock strong intimidating man who scared the death out of young infielders who didn’t make a play he thought should be made.

Some one ran onto the field in Wrigley and was trying to burn an American flag. Monday grabbed the flag away from the guy.
If that happened today Monday would probably be sued for infringing on that guy's right to free speech.
I have that issue of The Sporting News with Monday on the cover.

Jimmy Pearsall also did the kicked the fan in the butt trick. He also ran the bases backwards for his 100th major league homerun.

That only happened one time? I know Tom Seaver in his last couple of years when he was with the White Sox and Red Sox he wasn't very effective. Also i think his last year with the Reds wasn't too good.
I'm thinking that at the tail end of their careers this happened to more then one guy.
When Greg Maddux was with the Padres he gave up a lot of hits so I was thinking him too.

My first guess was Whitey Ford and I was close, every year he threw more innings than the hits he gave up till his 15th season when he gave up 79 hits in 73 innings.

I will give this hint, no one alive had ever seen this pitcher throw.

I just checked Seaver and Maddux.
Seaver's last year he had 104 IP and gave up 114 hits. The only time in his 20 year career that happened.
Maddux did a couple of times near the end of his career. but also once in his prime.
In 1999 when he had a 19-9 record he gave up 258 hits in 219 IP.

That's three greats who gave up more hits than innings pitched only in the twilight of their careers.

These five National Baseball Hall of Famers are the only members who have this one thing in common. What is it?

George "Mule" Suttles
Ulysses Franklin "Frank" Grant
Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra
John Henry "Pop" Lloyd
Leon "Goose" Goslin

I temporarily confused that with a memory of this cover..

And I always guess Bob Gibson for pitching trivia.

How did he continue to throw a spitball - Loaded with whatever e.g. Brillcream , when he had played for several teams that must have known he was altering the ball?

guessing - the only ones with their nicknames on their HOF plaques.

Good guess but no.
Not that it has anything to do with the question, but some of those Hall of Fame names played in the Negro Leagues.

The teams/ fans substituted their nicknames for their first names (i.e. everybody knows who Yogi Berra is...not as many knew Lawrence Peter?)...and their managers used the nicknames on official scorecards?

Didn't look it up...but you can tell can't you?:Eyes: :See:

I didn't expect to hear about Gaylord's cock.
It’s an expression we used often in the big leagues referring to a teammate or opponent who was considered intimidating and physically imposing.

Speaking of which..Zap if there was one guy in the bigs in your day, you wouldn't want to mess with, teammate or opponent, who would it be?

I ask because in the past 10 years or so the name that keeps coming up that I've read from guys was Kyle Farnsworth. Obviously he's way past your time but I was wondering.
Don't know if you saw this article but MLB.com picked the 70's Pirates as one of the 13 coolest teams in MLB history.

Former wrestler. Didn't he end someone's career in a fight by body slamming him? I think it was someone on the Mets?

Felix Millan. I met Ed at a function way back when. He was polite.

How's this? Name the only man to hit a homer in his first big league at bat and allow a homer to the first batter he faced

Good question. I'm thinking it might not be a pitcher but a position player who came into pitch in a game?

The list of hitting a home run in your first ML at bat is easy to find,
My manager Chuck Tanner did it with the Braves

Maybe I'm being to cute for my own good but he doesn't say it was the same game.

p.s. I loved Chuck Tanner. He could manage my team anytime.

Saw a quote by Tony LaRussa once.
When I first became a manager I asked Chuck Tanner for advice He Told me, "Always rent."

Has to be a NL pitcher unless he was a pinch hitter once in the AL.

I think I know but I can't think of his name. Did he pitch for the Padres?
