“Mount Rushmore” is always a fun topic with any sport or program. The list recognizes the four best and/or most significant people of the said category. What is unique about this topic is everyone has their own perspective of it.

TKR decided to give their outlook, selecting a Mount Rushmore for several of Rutgers sports programs. Check out our first selection, as TKR selects their Mount Rushmore of Rutgers wrestling!

Think we’re missing someone? Post below who you think could be added to this list!

I agree but would put 2 time All American Anthony Surage on honorable mention along with Mike Leta and Tom Tanis.

Wish Lex had been around longer to fairly consider wrestlers from the pre-Goodale days. No argument with Suriano, Ashnault, & Goodale. Perrotti broke the ice for Goodale and was exciting to watch. Doubt he is the third best wrestler in our history.

I considered others outside of the Goodale era. Perrotti and Surage were a toss up for me. Even thought about Dave Winfrey, the 1950 AAU national champion. All great careers. Went with Perrotti because the train hasn’t stopped rolling since he broke the ice. Consecutive AA’s every year since. This is the best stretch in Rutgers wrestling history, and it started with him.

Agreed with this, impact/influence on program should be factored in along w/ individual’s success

I think Mt. Rushmore has enough room for 5 heads, LOL.

Good stuff on the four people chosen and that comes from someone who knows little about wrestling but wants RU to succeed in all sports. Wrestling is certainly one of the programs leading the way.

Nice list and it's hard to supplant either of the four listed. Tanis came to mind as an honorable mention due to the run he had in the NCAAs. Another name not thrown out for honorable mention...Mike McHugh. The all time wins leader until Ashnault supplanted him during his last NCAA run.

I was also thinking Anthony Surage. Maybe its' a generational thing.

I was going to say Winfrey and he graduated over a decade before my father was born. Won the premier collegiate tournament of his day.

Dave Whinfrey was a Somerville High grad who went on to a great career at RU. We inducted him into the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a terrific guy who lived in the Philly area. He went to live in Maine to live with his daughter where he died a few years ago.
