In case you needed another reason to want to see us schedule Rider, Lipari has been granted another season of eligibility. Lipari vs Arganon II?

Cant really get too excited about a match up where neither guy would have qualified last season.... Arganon.. lol

You don’t need two elite wrestlers to see a great match. Their match this past season was my favorite individual bout of the year, without question.

I see Turley projected at 174 on the depth chart. If I remember correctly, he had trouble maintaining 165. Does he compete well with Grello or will he have to consider a RS year?

Is Vulakh comfortable at 149? I'd like to see Van Brill challenged and I don't know that Glasgow has the spark anymore.

174 - I'm interested in reading some opinions here. Turley was cutting too much weight last season in my opinion. He was also less successful in making weight. 174 puts him 8lbs under his high school weight but has to be more comfortable for him. I'm wondering if he has any chance against Grello or if Grello's experience is too much to overcome at this point. Does Turley sit through another year of eligibility or redshirt? If redshirt, and assuming the same for O'Neill, who backs up Grello?

I think Grello will win the spot, but will be interesting to see Turley up at a comfortable weight. Grello always wrestles close matches and Turley has a lot of funk, so would not be a shock if he "upset" Grello. Typically guys make their biggest jumps from their 1st year to their 2nd year in the room. If Grello wins spot, think both Turley and O'Neill redshirt. If Grello gets dinged up and needs a match or two off, Donner will probably just move up and fill in. If he has serious injury, the best of Turley, O'Neill or Donner will probably take the spot.

Agree with all that. Can’t see Grello not winning the spot in his final year.

I think Turley is more physically gifted but it’s best for both parties for Grello to start and Turley to redshirt.

If Turley is better he will start. We pretty much know what Grello is....if he is better than he should start, but if Turley beats him he should start. Turley and O'Neill will battle it out in the next few years(Turley can take a redshirt another year.) Never know how O'Neill will develop, but IMHO he will be better than Turley, so if Turley can start this year he should wrestle.

I’m not sure if Turley is better than Grello. Turley certainly has more upside though.

I love Turley's aggressive style, but if Grello is healthy I don't see Turley beating Grello. S&C coach DeMarco recently called Grello the best conditioned wrestler on the roster. And Coach Goodale has said twice now on the podcasts that some of true freshmen (Alvarez, Aragona, Turley) that wrestled last year will be red shirting this year. I think it could be all 3.

PS- I'm still a little puzzled about why Turley wasn't given a shot at 174 last season once Grello went down, since Turley had so much trouble making weight at 165. Unless Willie Scott was clearly the better option.

If Grello's so well conditioned he should be pushing the action to tire his opponent in the third. But he doesn't and he has a nice shot when he pulls it out those 5 times a year.

Could the redshirt's be a subtle hint that our sh*tliner is docking and a possible Suriano return? Otherwise, we really don't have top notch depth at 133 and 141 to take over for those two. If not it's going to be a long shortened year.

Thanks for all the thoughts regarding 174 and Turley's chances. Has anyone seen Vulakh training? I'm wondering how he's looking since he too was highly anticipated. Time off isn't usually a good thing. I'm hoping he is coming back strong and will be very competitive. Maybe Bill has some thoughts to share?

Dream Line Up:
125: Aguilar
133: Suriano or Teasdale***
141: Rivera*** or Sammy
149: Vulakh or Angelo or JoJo
157: MVB or Glasgow
165: Monday*** or Kanniard
174: Grello or Turley
184: Poz
197: Janzer
HWT: McDermott or Colucci
***=transfer targets
That would be a line up that could contend for a top 5 finish at nationals with good depth at every weight class except 184/197. There are 5-6 guys in that line up who would contend for AA status and 1-2 guys who would contend for a national championship. Also, this gives us the opportunity to redshirt some of the younger guys.

Does Metzlars get another shot at starting lineup (133)
If Alvarez takes a redshirt and depending if Suriano returns it seems like a strong possibility,

I would think a Top Ten with that lineup is a possibility,
Even with 2 national champions, RU would need some major step up from multiple wrestlers to make top 5.....A Top 5 for B10 Championships is a possibility :).

If Suriano does not return, think Alvarez will wrestle(if his weight is not a problem, if he outgrew 133 then redshirt).
If both do not wrestle, 133 will be a problem for us. Would think Robinson and Metzler winner would have the spot to start.

The NCAA is allowing another Olympic redshirt right?

Aguilar
Alvarez weight pending/Metzler/Robinson
Rivera
Vulakh
MVB/Glasgow
Kanniard
Grello
Poz
Janzer
Colucci/McDermott

2022 Suriano slides in at 133, Alvarez bumps to 141, Turley/O’Neil at 174. JoJo needs to make significant improvements and maybe wrestles 149 with Vulakh up to 157.

Others would know better than me, but I don’t see Alvarez having an issue making 133 this year. This lineup looks right to me. I think McDermott wins the heavyweight job. MVB vs. Glasgow will be the biggest battle for 157.

Glasgow's high school career and record would suggest a very competitive college career. The potential seems obvious but the evidence is not yet there. Of course, I'd like to see him successful, but it will be up to him and whether he can motivate himself.

Vulakh was thought to be our best freshman last year and then the injury. So we have no idea how he will be when he returns. Hopefully it is the guy we saw early.
I do remember the anticipation. I'm not at all aware of what has been going on since the pandemic or even Vulakh's recovery. Are the wrestlers training? I don't expect that many guys can come back from a layoff and be as competitive as they were unless they've re-engaged and kept conditioned. I suppose that is my question.

I’d argue there’s *some* evidence of college success based on holding his own wrestling a weight up as a true freshman. As a RS Soph, I think at a bare minimum he’ll make it a battle with MVB for the 157 job.

I thought Glasgow had a solid freshman year. Guy was banged up and it messed with his head. I’m not sure how well he recovered since he took some injury defaults last year on redshirt but I still think is one of the more talented guys on the roster if he can put it all together.

I honestly have no idea if Alvarez has weight issues but I just look at his height and I’m perplexed that he weighs 133

I have seen all the evidence I need to tell me he is an extremely athletic, strong and quick wrestler. Unfortunately, wrestling up a weight class and the injury limited any successful results. I think if whatever issues are behind him and he makes it on the mat, he is the frontrunner at '57.

Wouldn’t call him the front runner. MVB was a national qualifier. I think this is a similar situation to Turley vs Grello. The younger guy has significantly more upside but the older guy has the experience and probably has a a slight edge.

MVB during the season, Glasgow easily takes him. MVB at the end of the season then I think MVB might have a slight edge. Depends on which Mike you get, because I don't know about anyone else, but I saw a completely different wrestler at the end of the year. He went from tentative to **** this, I don't give a sh*t who my opponent is I'm getting this win.

"if he can put it all together" And that's where I have the question mark. Also, his injury predates Rutgers and was still an issue last year. I'd like to see a strong knee and an inspired wrestler.

The keyword was inspired. He has all the talent, but not so sure of the drive. Glasgow needs to fully commit, or they need to release him from the team. IMO

I don’t really know how scholarships work but there’s about 6-8 cuts to be made so I would imagine if his passion is gone he could be a cut. I don’t expect that to be the case though as there are so many extra bodies at heavy and 134-149 range.

Given Goodale's comments today regarding Glasgow, I'm not too optimistic. He said his health is good but some overriding questions about grades and motivation (my inference). I wonder why he would choose California over training at home.
