My daughter (who is a junior at Rutgers) just texted me and said that Rutgers has canceled Thursday and Friday classes this week, and that after spring break, all classes will be online only until further notice.

exactly...and I wonder if students will stay inside their homes when they get home or be out and about.
College kids are still going to drink and party guaranteed. Those that don't will probably still be getting together with friends and doing whatever else they like to do
i know in the grand scheme, basketball is not important, but it is so Rutgers that we finally get in and the campus is cleared and the games will be in front of no spectators. Even if they have spectators, the RU turnout will be significantly impacted.
if university are closing that means all schools..high school through elementary will close as well, ditto for pre schools and day care, so here we go...plus all retail...there is no in between, we are now headed to full scale panic and hysteria, cannot put the genie back in the bottle. Life as we know will be shut down for months. Good luck everyone and start boarding up your homes because we are now in a zombie survival movie mode
I have plenty of ammo and whiskey if you need shelter but you’ll need to stay in the crawl space the first 2 weeks.
Most of us upperclassmen students who live in off campus housing will be staying on campus. We will go out and just take classes at home as if every class was an online class nbd.
Stunning that I agree with Gov Cuomo but he's right NOT closing schools. There are too many kids, especially in the city, whose families rely on schools for a # of reasons. He is 100% AGAINST the way the media is portraying things. Good for you Gov!
Fewer people on intercampus buses, milling around at bus stops waiting for buses, and put together in classrooms/lecture halls. Students will still be around and engaging in their other usual activities (including going out to eat/drink) - this just limits certain interactions.

overall.. what happens when students LIKE the online classes?
and what about the students who don't want to be "home".. or only really have their campus living arrangements? Maybe they have no "home" to go to on Spring Break.
BTW.,. saw a video of people shopping in Italy.. they have to keep 3 feet away from the person in front of them on the line.
Maybe we should just shutdown the airports and interstates.. and allow local people to do local things.. as long as they have been tested

Apparently until 4/3 NOT through the semester. Smart I guess it gives kids who go away 2-weeks to show signs of the virus prior to returning to campus.
I know this will not be a popular opinion, but every epidemiologist that I have listened to has been in agreement that limiting close proximity is one of the most effective ways of slowing this spread. Slowing things down for 2-3 weeks and limiting contact may not be ideal but it is also better than months and months of spiraling hysteria.
Agreed. It is a very difficult balancing act. The (admittedly incomplete) fatality numbers in Italy suggest the virus is several times more fatal than the flu, so that explains the total Italian lock down there. But, most medical findings also suggest that young people are at very little risk, so there is justification for keeping them in school. The countervailing factor is that they are big-time germ spreaders and the concern is that they will infect the very vulnerable population - the elderly, infirm and those with compromised immune systems.

How long before University of Phoenix starts adding this to their marketing material as them being ahead of the curve and a safer choice?
Yeah , my wife is a professor at Rutgers and classes are suspended in person until April 4 for now. They are on Spring Break as of the end f this week. StartingMarch 23 week, my wife has to get up to speed in teaching a virtual online class , as they are asking their professors to complete training.
