Rutgers make the tournament, avoids the play in games but has to fly to Spokane and my vow to attend the first RU NCAA tournament game goes up in smoke due to COVID-19.

Tell me I'm not the only one who thinks the percentage of this happening is 50/50.

If they put Gonzaga and sd state in Sacramento and we are a 8/9 seed as I suspect we will be, then we have a 50% chance of headed to Cali.

Worst case scenario is NIT (from a hoops-only perspective, not the impact of a major outbreak if that happens). Even playing in an empty arena because of CID-19 concerns is better for the program than NIT.

I wouldn't mind Cleveland. It is only about a 7 hour drive. I have been to Greensboro in 1979 when we lost to St. John's. It is driving distance as well.

this is the order of preference for me, the top 5 I would drive to (NC). Omaha probably not. Bottom 2 definitely not I’ll save up and fly to the regional if we make it haha

Only 1 case in Spokane, just today. Might take 2-3 weeks to reach 50+, which is a WAG (wild assed guess) on the threshold in an area for shutting down public events. I have the same concern, which is why I've been downplaying the risk in my pinned thread on the football board - just kidding - been trying to be realistic and not fear-mongering, though. I got a ton of grief from my family just for going to the MD game on Tuesday. Had to promise to just stay in my seat the whole game and do full decon when I got home, which I did.

Why? No reason to think that they’d go out of their way to avoid it.
Correct, they try, within reason to keep teams relatively local, as long as it doesn't result in an unfair fan advantage in the first two rounds for high seeds, iirc.

The top 4 seeds in each region are protected against a home crowd disadvantage, but it only applies to the first round. So, that bracketing principle wouldn’t come into play for Rutgers, as it only impacts 13-16 seeds.

If we are lucky enough to go to Albany and win a game, the presumed higher seed in the second round could have a major disadvantage .

Yes genius . That’s why I said it could happen in second round .
You said it in quoting a post saying “Correct, they try, within reason to keep teams relatively local, as long as it doesn't result in an unfair fan advantage in the first two rounds for high seeds, iirc

Since you weren’t questioning his point, your phrasing could have been interpreted as pointing out that Albany is unlikely because of a crowd disadvantage in a second round game.

I wasn’t questioning his point . Did you see a question mark in there ?
I was agreeing and commenting we might have a nice crowd advantage in the second round if we:
A. Get placed in Albany and B. Win.

Remember as much as we would all love to hear RUTGERS name announced on selection Sunday we still are not in just yet... wondering where we might land is not the important thing... wherever they go we go.

How about looking at the bright side of things.....

We can now book travel to come home after the 1st game and the 2nd game. You cancel whatever flight you don't need and apply that ticket to the 2021 NCAA tournament

At this point to me it's close to a 50/50 chance they close down at least one arena. Once a few institutions overreact then other institutions will not want to be seen as underreacting.

South by Southwest in Austin has been cancelled. I think this is clearly trending toward a fan-less tournament.

It’s trending that way for sure.

My hope is that we can use the NCAAs as a example of how we can keep this economy and way of life going despite an scary disease.

Just posted in the other thread...

In Italy, the government has ordered the closure of all schools for 10 days as it battles to contain the outbreak and all professional sports, including Serie A football matches, will also be played without fans in attendance until at least 4/3. Given that the trajectory in the US is starting out to look similar to that in Italy (not many tested and high death rate in the elderly - see my linked post below for those details), I will now be very surprised if the NCAA tourney and other major sports don't start holding games without fans present. If by next weekend we have 5000+ cases and over 100 dead (even if almost all the deaths are in people over 65), like Italy does, which appears likely, I think we're going to be screwed, but it'll be understandable to avoid such large crowds with such a high transmission rates.

And if this happens would just prove that God hates Rutgers

Which also explains so many other things Rutgers related...lol

You'll be in the Piscataway Regional first and THEN they will issue a ban on spectators. Piscataway is kinda interesting. Easy living, luxurious seats, things really important now. Get excited, Rutgers. Something cool happening. It's a new optimism
