Watching A LOT of B1G games this past week. Teams take plenty of “wide open” 3’s against everyone. OSU and Michigan are taking open 3 after open 3 today.

It ain’t just us.

That’s why we have to defend the 3 point line because we cannot make them and are generally outscored by a large margin from 3 so we have very little margin for error

This is not logic that makes sense and we have great defensive efficiency the way we currently play defense.

The issue is which poison we want to pick. We have a center who is foul prone. We are rolling the dice that made threes will not do us in. If we look long term over the season the strategy seems to work more than it does not.

Rutgers has the 11th best Kenpom adjD ranking, the 17th best scoring defense and the 10th best FG% allowed in the nation but gives up 3s at 32% in a conference that averages 33%. Unless you are talking about giving up a game winning 3 at the buzzer, why do you care how the other guy gets his points as long as he doesn't get too many.

Anyway the point of this thread was to downplay the myth, propagated BR some here, that we “don’t defend the 3.” After this past weak I can say, without hesitation, we attempt to defend (or don’t defend) it as well as most.

Absolutely. We need to take more open 3s ourselves.. which has long been mentioned. Only after we start taking those open 3s can we see just how bad we are at hitting them. We have some idea... but we turn down far too many of them. I am real happy PM has started taking that shot occasionally.

I think we set the offensive philosophy early season when Myles was scoring and efficiently. It made perfect sense. But to now turn down open threes to get a worse shot makes no sense.

If our opponents are having an off night and get 2 empty trips but make a three and we miss a 2, make a 2 and turn the ball over, we still lose a point. Making enough 3's can be the difference and provides an emotional lift. Wonder what it would feel like to just be an average 3 point shooting team. A good night for us usually isn't enough to get the win either.

A good night for us is good enough just look at the Illinois game we won by 17 with good shooting that night. If we have a good shooting night we can beat anyone in the BIG

It only really matters if the 3's are falling, but we miss badly a lot with shots that aren't on line. Most other teams don't have that problem especially on wide open looks.

Agreed, but we had a great shooting night and they didn't. They made one more three and we made 8 more 2's. We should win this type of game easily and did by making the plays down the stretch.
We're very capable of winning on an average night, but mostly at home.
