1. Start Myles Johnson and get him involved. Plus I think Watkins doesn’t start so we have advantage at center to start game

2. Shorten the lineup rotation. Midway thru the first half, Pike should know who is on. Stick with a 7-8 guy rotation for rest of game

3. Go Small when needed. PSU not tantalizing quick and when Watkins is out not very tall. Small quick lineup could work without a center.

4. Stay with Hot Hand: Our next game is Tuesday vs Maryland (after PSU game) so we'll have 5 full days off in between games. Thus Pike should not be overly concerned about riding Baker or Kwasi or Harper or anyone else for 30-35 minutes if he has to.

I'd agree cept I think Shaq has done ok cept. Some bad calls. If miles isn't going to go hard to the rim I'm thinking this move is ok. I'm also cool with getting back to "normal."..

the problem with starting Myles is if he picks up a foul early it limits his first half usage. every time he is on defense I am yelling at him not to foul....hasn't worked too well. At least if he comes in at the under 16 time out a foul early might not result in his immediate benching.

Get Myles in there. We may lose with him but we can’t win without him being more involved from the start. Having him come off the bench hasn’t solved anything and Shaq just isn’t the presence on either end that Myles could be.

Ok, get miles in there but please please show him how to front the center and not let the other guy post him 5 feet away.
With his length nobody should be able to lobby the ball in over the top.

Play a lot (25-30+): Geo Montez Harper Jr Yeboah Myles

Play a good amount (15-20): Young McConnell

Play sparingly (9 or fewer): Mulcahy Carter

Don’t play together: Geo Mulcahy Young / McConnell Montez without 3rd guard

Play together: Geo Montez/ Geo Montez Young

Make it seem like Shaq will start and then start Myles.. don't allow PSU to use the time before tipoff to huddle and plan to go after Myles right away.

Start

Myles
Harper
Mulcahy (want to see him passing to Myles early)
McConnel
Geo

then when both teams sub bring in

Carter
Yeboah
Young
Mathis
(and keep Harper or Geo)

And PRESS HARD

Then go to the typical lineups and sub patterns.. but I really want to see more pressing and transition ball and that second lineup can do it.. hassle PSU especially when the starters come out for rest

You'll know what players are bringing it.

the problem is it varies from game to game who is on. In theory its a great idea to shake things up but when you have guys like Mathis who are often brutal early its hard to trust him later

in the first game vs PSU RU got down early before rallying before halftime, Watkins was excellent in the first half but totally shut down in the 2nd

The way Myles has played in the past few weeks, I just hope he doesn’t hurt us more than I expect a real contribution from him. It’s about Geo and Harper. How about 15+ points from each?!

Which raises the question, is it against any rule to have a player announced as a starter,
Then you trot out a different player for the tip off. I would guess you can’t because it would be a substitution already. Never seen it done

Technical foul. One free throw:

2019-20 NCAA Men's basketball Rules and Interpretations

Section 2. Administrative Technical Fouls

...

Art.2. A team shall comply with lineup and roster requirements as follows:

a. Before the 10-minute mark is reached on the game clock that is counting down the time before the start of the game, each team shall supply the scorers with names and uniform numbers of team members who may participate, and those of the five starting players.

b. After the 10-minute mark is reached on the game clock that is counting down the time before the start of the game and until the end of the game, a team shall not make lineup or roster changes to the scorebook except those changes necessitated by obvious injury, illness, blood on the uniform, a replacement of a designated starter to shoot a technical-foul free throw, or to correct a scoring or bookkeeping mistake.
PENALTY—One free throw awarded to the offended team. The ball shall be put back in play at the point of interruption.

(Art. 1) One administrative technical foul only for all requirements regardless of the number of infractions. Penalized before the start of the game.

A 50% Myles is still better than Carter. However, I have no problem stating Carter as long Pike is ready to pull the switch almost immediately. He waited way too long against Wisconsin. My bigger issue is with starting Mathis. Mathis is really a bench player but the problem that causes is that you have no shooters on the bench and often they will be in at the same time (Mathis, Young, Mulcahy).

I really really think he’s “brutal” early because Pike often plays him and McConnell together as the only guards on the floor. Judging by last game Pike is hopefully done doing that.

I agree with this minutes breakdown, PSU shoots a high amount of 3s, especially in transition and you definitely want them having to shoot over better defenders and be forced to guard our driving guards off the dribble.

I think Mulcahy however will still find a large amount of minutes because PSU really plays a lot of "4 on 5"....wheeler is their best defensive guard, but is only good off the dribble to score...he's also a reluctant shooter from distance.

The problem is you could play Mulcahy if Wheeler is on the court, except Wheeler is really only effective if he's bothering Geo Baker with his defense.

If you put Wheeler on Geo and Geo is off the ball, whomever is guarding Mulcahy isn't going to have to defend too much unless he's looking to be aggressive and score.

On the other end, if you try and ask Mulcahy to stay with Dredd or Lundy, they're going to feel confident they can score on Mulcahy or shoot over him. If you ask Mulcahy to stay with Wheeler and "cancel each other out", Wheeler isn't a shooter, so Mulcahy will have to play off him and force him to shoot....but if Mulcahy isn't able to stay in front of Wheeler on drives, it opens up shooting lanes for the other players.

Mulcahy needs to be aggressive on both ends tonight and look to attack the basket...he's going to get the benefit of a call if he drives. If we don't get much offense from Mulcahy unless he's driving and attacking, THEN, passing....otherwise, he's not going to help us short or long term.

Agree with 1 and 4.

Also, have to get McConnell back on track offensively and not opposed to starting him.

Have Geo come in after 5 mins each half and he gets 30 mins game, and perhaps to 4 mins so he is 30-32 game. McConell may get untracked with starting again.

Gotta correct the top of key hedging. Yes it's been discussed much but we are being game planned against because of it! Reaaaaally want to see a change in that tonight
