Anyone else think he's tying to play too much like Mulcahy right now? He's constantly getting into the paint then, instead of going up for a 5-12-foot jumper (which he is VERY good at doing), he stops, spins, then typically gets lost, fumbles the ball, or something else goes wrong. Don't recall him playing this way prior to the last month or so and it's very similar to Paul's game (which he is much better at the majority of the time..). Thoughts?

He was VERY good at the 5-12 foot jumper... but he's been so off lately that instead of expecting those to go down, I'm expecting them not to.

In games through the end of Jan:
23.4 min, 8.0 pt (.508 eFG%, .810 FT%), 4.4 rb, 2.1 ast, 1.6 tov, 1.7 pf

In games since the start of Feb:
21.3 min, 4.4 pt (.300 eFG%, .500 FT%), 2.9 rb, 0.4 ast, 1.0 tov, 1.6 pf

We have been seeing a bit more of him at the 3, though, rather than the point - maybe he's not comfortable playing so much off ball?

My 2 cents.........agree with Scangg.

In addition I think he is pressing. Players roles are changing so I think there is pressure on him and others to do well in the time they have. 20+ minutes are no longer a given.

Now part of the reason why he is losing minutes is his D has not been as good as it was. I don't discount physical and/or mental fatigue with anyone in our rotation. Or any rotation in the B1G at this point of the season.

Something that hasn't really been discussed is that Caleb wasn't playing much point and was a wing until Baker went down. Then he adjusted to being the starting PG and got into that role. Then Baker comes back and Mulcahy gets more minutes and now he has a different role again. All of those changes in his role might be contributing to his confidence level issues since his role isnt clearly defined

I agree and think the same could be said for our entire roster.
Agreed. Not sure what happened exactly but we went from playing balls to the wall aggressive and relentless to hesitation and timidness from basically the whole team. I was hoping the Illinois game would get the team's swag back but it wasn't the case

I think this whole team is a little fatigued, We have seen almost everyone go through a rough patch. Right now I think its Caleb and Young. we need a game were everyone is back to what they were 30 days ago.

Not just fatigue - can you imagine the pressure they are under right now to get to the NCAA tournament? Not to mention the unwarranted and often brutal personal attacks and criticism coming from their own fan base...would not want to be in their shoes.

It's sort of chicken and egg. Their confidence and aggressiveness should return once their shots start to fall, especially early in the game. I think it's as simple as that.

Somewhat true but what happened in the Michigan game then? We started strong then collapsed

I also think we are getting a lot less points in transition in Feb then Jan. Caleb seemed to be getting a good amount of points in “semi” transition, not a clear layup but defense not all back and he takes mid range jumper. In total set half court less his game. He also seems off his game too but think the lack of transition points is playing a part

Well, my take is that Pike will right the ship or stay on course. He knows what’s going on. He likes the effort, he likes the team (so do I BTW). Look at just a few of our losses! They miss two three pointers and we make just one more and we win. We get called on fouls 2 - 1 and just three more our way and we win!
I think Pike is like, “ keep doing what your doing” and the percentages will come through. We’re NOT playing badly. The competition is just brutal. If we got lucky or just a 3 here or there and our record is amazing. Keep the faith!

What separated us in January and February was that guys like Caleb and Jacob were stepping up big time. In February, they have not and thus our decline. Caleb; Jacob and Montez are critical to the success or lack of it.
