Since Pike has revealed he’s a defensive minded, defensive first coach.

What do you think the vast majority of his practice time has been spent on preparing for OSU....stopping the Wesson’s or scoring on them...:Rutgers:)

So tell me this Zap - everyone and his brother knows that OSU’s first offensive play is to challenge Johnson in the post with Calen Wesson so he can (predictably) pick up a foul. How do you counter that?

Thought it was really interesting Pike said post game NW, in the second half we actually backed off and did not hug the perimeter guys without the ball once we got into half court defense.
That allowed us to get to the boards, rebound and also allowed us to protect the weak side by not overplaying them.
The media guy asked the question, what did you do to address NW’s 3 point barrage...I was expecting the opposite answer from Pike.

He knew they would come back to earth. They were shooting about 20% above their average, when their shots would be long, he will need backside rebounding. Great move, then he made them work to get open which rush their shots.

I found this to be effective in a few ways. As one poster said they were shooting over 50% in the first half from deep (some due to open looks others due to good shooting) that was well above their average. Also I noticed Myles & Shaq not overly hedging hard which led to less guard rotation on a big and leaving the wing on the back side reversal open for 3. I think we need to not help as much on the drive as guys look to kick it to the 3 point line in todays game and force contested shots. Trust in our 1:1 defense that we will win.

You lose more minutes worrying about foul trouble then minutes to a guy actually fouling out.
I think that’s more speculative than factual. Every person handles pressure differently but it certainly could be true. We just don’t know,

Hopefully we can at least control Calen Wesson somewhat. We cannot allow him to get many many touches right near the basket. It would be nice if Myles can get one or two clean blocks on his shot without getting tagged with a foul. We also must not allow any Ohio State players to make a lot of open threes. We need Mathis, Young, McConnell, Baker and Mulcahy all to guard the perimeter very well tomorrow night. We need a 100 % effort from everyone who plays tomorrow. I sure hope we can get a win on the road tomorrow.

My point was, Pike’s strategy of “guarding the perimeter” the second half of NW was completely different than what most of us probably thought.

Myles fouled out of the Michigan State game. We went 10 or so minutes where he couldn't play. That's all

He killed us last year. I think no Eugene for that game

Eugene got hurt against them early and we went on to win that game.

He was back when we played them in Columbus... they went 13-28 on threes and it was never really competitive.

thanks I just remember the game in Ohio we were blitzed in every facet and Wesson was unstoppable. Just looked..Wesson was 10-12 with 27 points

Would like to see Pike actually show some creativity and start Shaq. We have data guys in the athletics department for sure, SOMEONE has had to tell him that ALL SEASON the “famous” big guy on the home team ALWAYS “can do no wrong” and draws a foul in the early minutes without calls going on him. Myles starting is a guaranteed foul in the first 2 minutes with Wesson in there. Let’s start Shaq with the plan then to drive on Wesson on O the first 2 possessions with Geo or Caleb and try to get a foul called on him to put THE OTHER TEAM on their heels inside for once. But Pike would never try this strategy.

Eugene played and started, we just didn't have the footspeed to matchup. He killed us on 10-13 from the field.

If you read 90% of the message boards, all the fans are complaining about the lack of offense or inability to get good shots...it probably stems from watching NBA games with the highest skill level and casual defense, vs less talent and more defensive coaching.

If you want to win consistently at the college level, it starts and ends on defense and rebounding. I think CBB tried to address it a year or two ago, with "freedom of movement", thinking that the defense was because players were being mugged or held and not able to cut to the basket....but ultimately, in order to have what is considered "good offense", you have to have a player(s) that can catch the ball inside the 3 point line and dribble, pass or shoot. While it seems simple, it's about skill, size and being able to shoot at all 3 levels (5-10 feet, 10-15 & from 3, if possible).

We have Caleb, Harper and Myles Johnson, who give you parts of that....Caleb and Ron can shoot from distance and handle the ball, Myles is a very good passer but not a complete offensive player.

As Ron Harper and Caleb (and I believe eventually Mathis), can catch the ball in the post or baseline and operate against 1 defender or pass if they are doubled, the ball will move and you look better on offense.

Wesson is that type of player, he can post up, turn and score, face up and shoot and has added an element of being able to shoot 3s, which creates havoc for Myles Johnson or Shaq Carter having to guard him....Shaq Doorson, Myles or Eugene were not quick enough to close out on him shooting or able to slow him down.

RU will only win tomorrow if they have a solution to make Wesson pass the ball and make him work on defense. Myles is better than last year, so hopefully Myles makes Wesson work in the paint on defense to stop him, so he doesn't coast through the game.

Another reason to sit a guy with foul trouble is that he may play too timidly trying to avoid fouling.

With Myles, if we can get 30 minutes from him, then he fouls out with 3 minutes left, so be it, especially because he’s a lousy foul shooter. But I can understand that Pike might prefer to have him for the endgame, for defense and rebounding.

Ah message boards... trying to think outside the box and the solution is to sit our best front court player to start the game. It's an interesting thought, but will never happen. It will be up to Myles to play good defense without fouling. I'd almost rather some creative switching on Wesson, who has added a 3 point shot to his resume. He takes it a lot and can make it... but we might be able to slow him at the three point line if we let Yeboah guard him there instead of Myles... but even then I might be over thinking.

Yes, but you need to account for games when he was in foul trouble. He was out for long stretches of the Illinois game.
Agree

If you want to prioritize when Myles plays it is when the opposing "good" big guy is in. If we dont start him Carter is.

BTW everyone, his name is KALEB, not Calen. It's Kaleb Wesson. You're welcome.

This! Put Yeboah on him when he steps out! That being said didn’t he burn us from outside last year, early and often, in Columbus?

That may be true he has only fouled out once but there were multiple games where his foul trouble limited his minutes and effected the game.
The past is past
Let's focus on him not being as foul prone as earlier which has been helping the team
