The "record" at Kansas was set before the game started, with representatives of Guinness World Records there to measure the noise. So it seems that Guinness set up their equipment and told the crowd to make enough noise to set a record. A record set that way is somewhat meaningless.

You would need some sort of organic comparison from reputable sources to see which arena is loudest, for example if TV broadcasters measured crowd noise through the game. I don't think random people running running a sound meter from their phones would qualify for the Guinness record book.

I hear you. Not looking to submit to Guinness for a record. I’m more interested in knowing how the RAC stacks up to perception. And if it does like we all assume, the more stuff like that gets repeated.

I'd be curious more than anything. Ears were ringing the next day after the Seton Hall game.

We should have a loor decibel meter reading shown on the scoreboard. Its gotta be pretty easy to do.

You can easily do this from an Apple Watch but would have to be on lower level to get full effect

Legend has it (at least what I heard in the late '80's) that the quirky trapezoid top creates a whispering gallery-like effect, where the sound from all directions bounces off and drops down onto the center of the arena. If this is true, then not only is it louder in the student section vs section 204, but it is even louder on the court.

When there's Scarlet pouring out your ears and you can't hear anything except a ringing in your head, the decibels are WHO like...and Townsend's half deaf.

We have something to do with it too. I remember SHU fans commenting how loud we were at the Rock in 2016, so it's not just a RAC thing.

Years ago it was a lot louder because everyone in the 100’s stomped their feet and it was double the loudness. Same in the student section.

Love Rutgers Hoops. Love the RAC for what it is. Doesnt compare to the other major venues in college hoops

In terms of noise level it just doesnt get to that level of Phog Allen Fieldhouse, Assembly Hall, Hilton Coliseum, Rupp Arena etc

db meters are cheap enough, I wonder if they could hook an actual one up to the scoreboard and give a live reading?

...and there weren’t a lot of students there. 109 was full (obviously), 110 were all recruits and family, and 108 was a lot less full than it could be (But we will talk about that elsewhere(, So just imagine what decibel level could be in the student section if it’s actually filled with students.... All 3 sections (Still won’t match what it had been in the past, For reasons we discussed many times already, but nonetheless it would be much higher...)!!!

I know for a fact that it is louder on the actual playing surface than anywhere in the stands. I’ve been going to RU games all my life. As loud as it gets with people around you, the loudest I’ve ever heard in my life was the first Big Ten game in football against PSU, I was on the field when the horse came running out of the tunnel, the sound was so loud that it actually made that muted/muffled crackling sound in my ears like when you are at a concert and they turn the speakers up too much. I can see why the PSU players accused us of pumping in noise over the speakers that game, the sound from the crowd was just unreal

Peak decibels possible is one thing, actual decibels consistently attained is another. Some arenas can get really really loud when they're playing a rival, but can be largely quiet when not.

I wonder if one of our players could wear something that could track the decibel levels throughout the game, kind of like football players wear things to track heart rate etc.
