Nobody is beating Iowa when they get a whistle like this.
Wow - I just looked at the B1G in-conference stats. Michigan is dead last in defensive scoring at 80.4 per game, but tops in offense at 77. Iowa is second in scoring at 76.8 and lower half in defense at 71.8 per game. Not surprising that this game will be around the 80s.
Some serious high level basketball being played in this game. Love our team but really shows the importance of having guys who can shoot from both the mid range and beyond the arc, especially a big like teske and garza.
If Michigan falls, their top 25 ranking could be in jeopardy. After tonight, they face Penn State and Illinois at home before going to Nebraska. Then we tangle in NYC. They could get on a bit of a roll there.
Listen...Iowa in Iowa City with students back at night is gonna be a HUGE task as it is so...knowing Garza is gonna do everything he can to draw fouls on Myles early and take him out of the equation as quickly as possible in the 1st half...do you start Carter and insert Myles at the under-16 TO? Or maybe sub early and often using Docoure as well?
Just “spit-balling” here. Thoughts? After Sunday this is going to be like the fourth (?) straight big guy who is going to be able to give Johnson all he can handle and I’m worried that he just might really get frustrated by that game and play right into what Garza tries.

If Iowa attempts 20 more free throws than us we have zero chance whatsoever.
Either us or Wisconsin will beat them in Iowa (their next two games). Hope it's us.
The scary thing about tonight atleast was not just Garza but Kriener can do damage inside and outside as well. I know we had two great games against them last year but winning at carver hawkeye is going to be extremely difficult.
Garza against Nebraska played 36 minutes, shot less than 50 percent from the floor and scored 16 points. He did pull down 18 boards. After watching Myles obliterate Nebraska in the paint, I’m not sure how Garza had those numbers. It makes no sense.
Did not watch that game but what did Nebraska do to slow him down? It’s not as if Nebraska plays a slow tempo to limit Iowa’s possessions.

They played a junk defense collapsing around the paint and Garza and gave him nothing easy. Iowa was 4-33 from three as they could not hit the right side of the barn . They kept on hoisting and bricking 3’s.
So it’s pick your poison and Hoiberg decided to live or die with Weiskamp/Fredrick shooting Threes. Not sure what poison I’d pick, but what shocked me tonight was how easy it was for Iowa to get the pass into the post to Garza. Michigan’s defense didn’t do well defending the passing lanes.
Fredrick was out and Weiskamp didn’t hit one until the second half.
Ah that was when Fredrick was hurt thus a little easier when a player shooting around 50 percent from three is sitting.
Garza will be a load but we will pressure the ball to make sure they cannot enter it to the post well and still recover to the three point shooters. Also, I think this is a game Pike will let us to get out and run and run we will. I think Montez and Ron get 20 points each . Really think they cannot handle us and we will carve up their zone.
Thinking back to our 2 games last year where a lot of the same players will be on the court, I felt we were more athletic than Iowa which lends itself to transitional offense. Of course Garza is much better and there’s no Bohanen, however a number of our players have matured from last season as well.
For Rutgers to have any chance against Iowa on the road it probably will require scoring more than 70 points.Iowa is a mediocre defensive team but their inside/outside scoring prowess is hard to stop along with the ability to get to the foul line.
I would stay with our regular starting lineup. If its another hard lesson for Myles then we will just have to deal with it. While he has been doing better at avoiding fouls I am not sure if it has cost us some of his aggressiveness. Myles is also our best chance to get Garza in early foul trouble on the other end. Tough game for us either way, although the guys should have a little confidence (Harper in particular) based on their performance there last year. Rims most be soft in that gym!
Iowa is willing to allow you to take an open 3 pointer, as long as they get the tempo they want.
My guess is Harper, Yeboah and Baker will get whatever open looks they want. The question is whether we also drive to the basket with Mulcahy, Mathis and Young.
I am not advocating playing Garza 1 on 1, but they have so many shooters available to them, it's not as if you can shade to the post to prevent the entry pass easily.
Passing over the long arms of Mathis, McConnell, Mulcahy and Harper to Garza should mean deflections and run-out. I also think this game gets RU into the 70s, but can RU get into the 80s like last year's visit to Iowa City.
I can't see Iowa torching RU for 80+ points. If we make shots and drive to the basket, we should get to the FT line....I think Michigan was willing to take 3s with Iowa and ultimately it only takes a bad stretch of misses. Michigan didn't attack like they should have, off the dribble.
