The thing that will "Save" football is having a populace that does not want to be told what to do by the Nanny State! Just like ANY activity that entails risk, people are free to make a decision as to whether they want to participate or not.
The majority of the population is tired of the politically correct BS that is spewed by the left relentlessly that tries to emasculate men any chance they get. To the left, Boys wearing dresses = OK....Boys playing a physical contact sport = OMG the kids are going to be scarred for life! Enough with the BS, boys want to play football in spite of the low risk of a catastrophic injury and technology will help to reduce those incidents.

What's going to kill football is high schools being unable to cover the sport because the cost of insurance will sky rocket.

I always thought no one forced football players to play against their wishes.
I also always thought football players had seen the game before and saw that it was a violent sport.
I also always thought it was football players inflicting the damage on other football players.

Play football or don't but don't make victims out of these guys. The know the score.

Part of the issue, in my opinion, is some people refuse to let go of old techniques and teaching points that do make the game safe ( like changing how we tackle). I see bad coaching at the youth level constantly and it hurts the game.

They do, OTOH, it's hard to make good, informed choices based on potential health outcomes decades later. People aren't designed that way, especially not young people. I'm certainly not someone who says that we should be banning contact sports like football but, IMO, saying 'people know what they are signing up for' doesn't really cover it completely.

Disagree. Especially after the last 25 years or so.

Also, putting football aside do people not understand physical impacts in work or play may cause harm. Have we not known this since the beginning of time?

Sure we know more, but people are really bad at making choices that weigh long term vs short term impacts.

Again, I'm not even saying we should make any changes, just that there should be some awareness that this sort of decision making is problematic for people in every area of life, from physical injuries, to retirement savings to food choices. Saying 'they know the potential impact' is all well and good, but there is overwhelming evidence that people as a whole aren't very good at using that type of information to make good decisions.

Bad coaching and players are the main problem. Somewhere around same time as steroids surge, people got the idea to increasingly use helmet as a bludgeon - especially to stun receivers etc. Putting a shoulder into ball carrier was replaced with facemask in the numbers. That's prison ball and there was too much of it. A "safer" helmet wont fix neanderthals.

But, Its the concussion cartels hurting football specifically. Football concussions are the global man-made climate change of sports. Media wants hype, researchers want money and fame, lawyers/clients want money, political kooks want weird things (boys in football = bad - but girls in football = OMG yes!).

Lots of concussion researchers never signed off on the hysteria. NFL "researchers" went to media and not other researchers. So much fake "science." Drinking, drugs, diabetes cause same problems. Many dead NFLers (Seau etc) had wayward lifestyles and bad habits

In fact "national research has found girls are more likely to suffer a concussion than boys in any sport."

But there's more money and hype in football

The better the equipment, the more dangerous the game becomes. It used to be that when you hit a guy full force, it physically hurt both of you on contact. Now, you don't feel the initial physical "pain" so you throw your head and bodies that much harder at each other doing much more damage then ever before and not even realizing it.

One big challenge is that the detailed health risks of football aren't really well understood by many, and research is ongoing. Knowing you're risking broken bones, torn ligaments, concussions, or other acute trauma is different than understanding that the much smaller day-to-day impacts can have cumulative effect. The link between football and CTE wasn't published until 2005, and the NFL didn't agree to participate in research until 2009 - at which point former players started pledging to donate their brains to science.

As more players who have pledged their brains to research CTE die, the research will get better and better. And as the overall impact is understood more, people will be able to make more informed decisions. Smoking is a pretty fair parallel - as awareness grew about the health impacts of smoking, overall rates of smoking went down.

I think it's fair to say that rates of youth football participation may also go down, but similar to smoking will not ever go away entirely.

In burbs the number of parents (including me) that let their kids play football is dwindling. Soccer and Lax surging as a result. It's sad, but it's happening.

Wait till the studies come out that heading the ball in soccer causes the same brain injuries that happen in football.

It's easier to ban heading the ball in soccer.

It's the frequency of the hits though. I played on the line. We butted heads every play, not just a few times a game. Also, it's easier to just ban heading the ball in soccer. Wouldn't be that big of a change. I think it's possible to change the rules in football and have the helmets come off, but the change will be bigger. But eventually I think football will change.

Wow. Way to take a medical issue and turn it into political bile and nonsense.
