Why were no handball calls all game? Must have seen at least 5.

After watching the women this morning, the Red Bulls this afternoon, and the gold cup tonight, I just can’t get into this sport.

The officiating is so inconsistent yet crucial to the outcome and the amount of flopping is out of control. Why do they have to act like they have broken ankles? Even with the flopping in basketball they don’t act like every foul is a career ending injury.

Biggest difference between US Men and US Women is center midfield. Ertz owns the midfield - skilled and physical. Bradley is a 2-way player - can’t play offense and can’t play defense.
Lol. It really is depressing to have to rely on such veterans like Bradley & Altidore. Sure, they are savvy but we won't go far unless we get more players like Mckennie & Pulisic. I almost prefer Zardes over Josh, but he's just as limited in his own ways. It was good to see Roldan & Boyd given chances, but I'm not sure they will be given enough chances to fail, as Berhalter needs to qualify for the next WC and might have to play it safe. We'll see how it goes, but I hope that Bradley is at worst a bench option come the Bed. Jozy might be our best option up top unless someone develops.

How so go check on the rank and file of the armed forces of this country and see who identifies as Americans. Same old song with you guys generalizing just to do it.

Oh stop. Has NOTHING To do with the fact that Mexican-Americans will always root for Mexico over America. Dumb response.

Not sure why you would expect otherwise.

If you moved to Mexico, would YOU root for Mexico over US?

My family - Even the ones born in Greece - would NEVER root for Greece over the U.S.A..

My family, born in Italy, root for the Azzurri. They grew up rooting for them and will always root for them. They want the US to win, just not when they are playing Italy.

According to the “All NJ residents are supposed to support Rutgers immediately upon moving to NJ” - how many here would support Mexican National Team if you moved to Mexico next week?

I doubt many would.
I sure wouldn’t.

Same for my family who grew up in Italy but live here now.

Very interesting how many “fair weather Patriots” there are around here.
I thought everyone would root for the US regardless of moving out of the country.

How many Rutgers fans live in another state?
Would you root for the local public college over Rutgers?
Why not?

But would they show up to the game wearing a T-shirt the read "Chinga tu madre" in Italian?

50,000 Mexican-AMERICANS rooting for Mexico. Disgusting,

My family - Even the ones born in Greece - would NEVER root for Greece over the U.S.A..

NUTS - I can appreciate that that's how your family was with regard to sports, but surely you can appreciate that people who grew up in Mexico as fanatic fans of Mexican soccer and immigrated to the US to become citizens, might actually still root for Mexico over the US in soccer. I was curious about this, so I asked several people I play soccer with, who immigrated to the US from other countries, like Italy, Colombia, and Ecuador, and almost all of them said they still root for their home countries, even over the US, but have the US as their second favorite team. These are some fairly patriotic folks, too. This was not a scientific poll, but it just points out that there are multiple perspectives on this from immigrants and labelling fans as "disgusting" who still root for their home country is probably a little over the top. I wonder if anyone has ever done a real poll on something like this. One question I have is why didn't more US fans buy tickets to the game? Also, I know it's not a "country" thing, but I'm certain I'd never root for anyone other than Rutgers, even if I moved to some other college town.

My Grandparents came to America from Ireland.
In sports Ireland is my second favorite team.
I can see the sons and daughters of immigrants possibly rooting for their parents country in sports.
But feel that is wrong since they are Americans , I just understand the wanting to honor where your ancestors came from

If your parents were born in America, your connection to another country is family history and that type of connection isn't ( in my opinion) enough to make rooting for it over where your were born the proper thing to do

edit: post below reminded me.
Root for grandsons high school #1 but school in my area #2
My old HS in Jersey #1 no matter who they play
Rutgers the #1 in all sports .
#2 is ASU
#3-4 and on are because of family connection.

Root for Ireland unless they are playing the US.

If I moved to another state, probably the same...root for the local state school (or even a close by DII or DIII) except when they play Rutgers.

I do it now for the local HS, hope they do well unless they are playing against my son’s school.

Yes. It's the same reason I became a Rutgers and Giants fan. I live in this state so they are my home teams. Sorry Jets you just sucked way too much when I was little and now as well. If I moved from the US to reside in Mexico. It's Viva el Mexico. Are they good in any other sports or for that matter in anything else that they do?

If I moved out of state Rutgers would still have a soft spot in my heart but I'd probably buy season tickets to the local College team and become a big fan.

That seems crazy to me

I am from New Jersey and went to Rutgers.

I now live in Northern Virginia.
I don’t root for Maryland, UVA, Tech or any other team from the area unless I have a rooting interest such as a family member attended one of the schools.

My allegiances are Rutgers, then...
(No one else is on the radar)

So if I moved to State College, I should buy season tix and become a fan?

Agree that hardwired fan-aticism is very hard to overcome. Sure I liked Michigan football as a kid, since I liked their helmets and fight song, but as soon as I came to Rutgers that went out the window and I became a die-hard RU fan and that will never change no matter where I live. In fact, out of the 20 or so people who have had tickets with me over the last 13+ years, about half were grads/fans of other schools, but adopted RU as their primary rooting interest, except if RU went up against their college team. So, I completely understand lifelong fans of Mexico sticking with Mexico after moving to the US and becoming citizens. Much harder to understand kids born in the US not being US fans, although some of that probably depends on the fanaticism of their parents.

More of a college football fan and football in general. Rutgers is the home school so I root for them with great passion and defend the undefendable to friends, family and the occasional dickhead. Adopted them in my teens when everyone of my friends liked Miami, ND, psu and Oklahoma. Just never been a follower as everyone likes a winner. Have season tickets to two sports, football for 15 yrs but did not attend the school. Hell I even donate money to your dumb school.:)(doesn't seem to be helping)

But if I move let's say to South Carolina, I'll probably adopt USC as my team as one, I'm a sucker for the underdog and two I would buy season tickets to watch the games. No way I'm schlepping all the way up to Piscataway for games. Sure I'd watch on TV with great interest but the connection or feeling just wouldn't be the same and eventually would fade. The same happened when I gave up Giants season tickets sure they're still my favorite pro team but I don't watch with much vigor.

From what I’ve heard a night game in Columbia is a pretty good time.

If I ever did move there and actually became a fan they would probably go on a streak of most consecutive losing seasons in program history. While Rutgers would go on a streak of 10 consecutive New Year's day bowls.

Ah,

Probably not.
I mean, the amount of vile shirts I see during Giants/Dodgers series, or back when I was at Yankee Stadium the Sox shirts that were made up, are just as bad. Not really a culture thing.

Well aware and they all annoy me. You’re a citizen of this country, you root for this country, plain and simple. Route for your homeland as often as you want, whenever you want, but not against the country that takes you in and you’re a citizen of at the time. Sorry.

Oh Please.

It's a sporting event, not a war. People grow up rooting passionately for a team and when they come to the US, they can't root for the team anymore if they're playing the US? You can be a proud American and still root for the national team from the country you immigrated from.

Ireland sucks at soccer so they are like Rutgers in that regard. I agree with you since my mom was born raised in Costa Rica came here and had me and my two brothers. The only time I root against America is when Costa Rica plays The USA in Soccer. Blood is Blood and me and my bro have been deployed 4 times to fight for THIS country he 3 times and me once. It’s no where near as bad and dumb as NJ Italians who have never spoke Italian or visited claiming to be Italian. If you can’t speak it write it you ain’t it.
