Not to be that guy, but they were in the dance once they won their conference tournament. The term "play in game" is a misnomer. It's a 68 team field. If you're one of the 68, you get to hang the banner even if you lose on Tuesday or Wednesday.

I honestly have never felt that way. I suppose you're technically correct but to me you're only in the tournament once you in the field of 64
I feel the same way about baseball: the wild-card game isnt theplayoffs but again I accept the fact that that's not technically accurate.
It was a nice comeback, they were down by about 10 with about 10 min to go.

If rutgers ever gets in the tournament we will probably have to play Tuesday night knowing our luck.
Plum...Why should it be the last at-large bids ? These teams are playing to get into the 64, so it should be the last 8 of all 68. There are some auto-qualifiers who fit here.

Because they expanded the field to allow those extra 4 at large in. That’s why they are in those games.
the autobid winners should all not be playing in the play in games...why is FDU any different than the other 2 16 seeds who dont have to play a play in game, just because their SOS was a little lower. The little guys shouldnt be punished with a play in game, they qualified

Completely agree that all auto-qualifiers should be exempt from the First Four. The First Four was a way to give an extra 4 bubble teams a chance.... then the last 8 at-large should be the ones squaring off to prove their way in.
Been saying this for years. I'm also 100% certain that Ohio State vs. Oklahoma would draw far better ratings than Fairleigh Dickinson vs. Prairie View.
But it's not a mystery why they do it the way that they do.
They do it exactly how they WANT to do it. It’s an invitational tournament after all. That said. It should absolutely be the last 4 At-large teams in the tournament and the winners will be 16 seeds. Sorry St. John’s, you weren’t even gonna be in the tournament 5 minutes ago, now you’re an 11 seed and get and easier ride than other teams who won their way in? You don’t like it then decline invite and go be a top seed in the NIT. That’s how it SHOULD be done
Although I don’t think the 16 seeds should play the FDU game was fun to watch . It was nice rooting for another jersey school for a change
I absolutely agree, if you win your conference, you get the autobid, therefore, you should not have to play in the "play in" games. I agree, the last 8 bubble teams should, no matte who they are.

I seem to remember, in the last few years,the play in games were being referred to Round 1, then Thursday and Friday were Round 2. This year, there was no reference. Am I mistaken in my memory, that is generally fading fast anyway.

Indeed. When RU opened the season vs. FDU, Pikiell mentioned he wouldn't mind if a player or two on the FDU roster were playing for him.
They used to call the Dayton games the opening round and then the games on Thursday and Friday the first round. Very confusing. Much better now, referring to the Dayton games simply as the First Four.

So you want to take all the fun out of the tournament and the conference tounaments?
No, I want the 96 top rated teams playing in the tournaments. There still will be plenty of fun.
Would you rather see one of the top seeds play North Dakota St. (200) or Colorado(64) in the first round?
If you don't like kenpom maybe a combined kenpom/net composite rating could be used.
I love the possibility of the mid majors upsetting the big boys. I love the conference tournament weeks. It's so unique. It's great.

In answer to your question - the former over the latter. NDSU is interesting as conf winner CU; not so much as a 64. Love the mid majors- why in hell would you mess with the format? This tournament is so interesting because we get to see the passion these smaller programs bring to the early rounds.
I agree with Bac that the play in games should be for the last 8 at large teams. However, the counterargument is that this win has done wonders for FDU from a publicity perspective. Getting this win BEFORE getting drubbed by a #1 seed seems to work out well for these lower mid-majors.
I consider the Majors as ACC, B1G, B12, SEC, P12, BE and AAC in basketball.
There are 15 other teams in Kenpom in his Top 64 that you may consider Mid-Major or Low-Major.
They are Gonzaga, Wofford, Buffalo, Nevada, St. Mary's, Utah St, VCU, Lipscomb, Belmont, Murray St., New Mexico St., Furman, Toledo, Liberty & Utah St.
